New KOOL HD-3

Just heard a promo on "Roq Of The 80s" (KROQ/HD-2) that starting tomorrow the station will also be heard on KOOL HD-3. Does this replace anything that had been on there before? What is on KOOL's HD-2?

Entercom is certainly putting more muscle behind the HD sub-channels and of course pushing listening to Radio.com. Some of these sub-channels are excellently programmed, Roq of the 80s and "Energy" on WBBM-FM/HD-2 especially.
 
KOOL's HD-2 still playing "Hits of the 70's"? I haven't listened to KOOL in a year or so. Been listening to the Goldmine (93.3 HD-2).

Yeah there’s already enough stations playing 80’s music. I always thought KOOL should have an oldies station HD sub channel playing 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s oldies. Why have an 80’s centric HD sub channel when the primary station mostly plays 80’s music to begin with? Makes no sense.

I’m with you, I listen to Oldies 92.7 on 93.3 KDKB - HD 2. The sound quality, even for those old 60’s hits, is phenomenal. Hubbard does a great job with it. KOOL is NOT COOL anymore!

Yes, the HD2 is still all-'70s, with imaging from KAZG's Steve Goddard. How about swap the worn-out '70s tunes for MeTV-FM (like what's on one of their Milwaukee HD2s) while Entercom's switching around HD channels (101.5 added "Out Now" on its HD2, moving CBS Sports Radio, which is redundant during many broadcast hours thanks to KQFN, to HD3. If Today's Comedy leaves 1260 like the promos I've been hearing on 96.5 say, I see that as a candidate of replacing CBSSR)?

The 93.3 HD2 feed sounds "crunchy" and compressed compared to if you're in an area with decent 92.7 reception. Kind of like the 95.1 and 98.3 simulcasts on 103.9 HD2/HD3, respectively. I believe HD2s/HD3s can sound better, but the engineers don't put any effort in it.

Well, the HD-2 is now KROQ Roq of the '80s. I assume HD-3 is now the '70s format (currently "Riders on the Storm").

Correct. They added "Roq of the '80s" to KOOL HD2 this morning and moved their '70s music to the HD3. I'm not sure it this was crossed wires by the local Entercom engineers, but Freddie Snakeskin announced it as being "KOOL HD3" and the '70s channel still has "HD2" imaging.

Are you sure that’s the agreement Entercom has with Weigel in Milwaukee? It helps that they own stations in the market, but nowhere on Envision Networks’ website does it say that the affiliated TV station is the one that leases out the HD subchannel. Envision are the ones syndicating the format, not Weigel.

Sure, they could copy the playlist, put it on a computer, and call it “Boomer Radio,” then just syndicate it to HD channels in desired markets. But they wouldn’t have the same kind of marketing tie-in that MeTV FM offers. This is a format that won’t make money on a 100,000 watt analog FM and many boomers don’t know a stream from a river. You’ve got to give them props for at least trying to make it work.

There are lots of ways to get channel 7 to promote Entercom stations if that was worth something.

In the meantime, there's another station in the market already playing these songs.

Many boomers were in their 40s and 50s when the internet came into their lives, either as something they were introduced to at work or something they or their kids were fascinated by. I'm 63, got on the internet when I was 42 -- and I was late to the game even then!

Point is, more boomers are likely to know about streaming than you think.

There is NO station playing soft AC gold in Phoenix anymore. KOAI plays ‘70s/‘80s rock-based classic hits these days—a far cry from what they were two years ago. KEZ sounds like a Hot AC with older jocks. Don’t say there isn’t a market for this kind of format or that other stations are filling all of their niche. Just because you don’t like the format doesn’t mean there are people that do.

Sorry, wrong answer. KAZG is mainly an uptempo station and their playlist stops at 1979. No Air Supply or ‘80s Journey on there. Plus they focus mainly on top-20 hits from 1965-1979. You won’t hear many minor hits on the station anymore.

While streaming is newer, many of "us" boomers began to explore the Internet early on with products like the 1994 "Internet in a Box" software package. (I wish I had save the package... right down to its corrugated cardboard box packaging!)

Before that, we had AOL and Compuserve. I joined CIS in the mid-80's and by the end of that decade, CIS had some hooks into the Internet. So, if we include the CIS links, I've been using the internet for 30 years.

And, of course, we had lots of dial-up BBS services... that was an early way of getting software patches as well as the source of things like The WELL, also created around 1985.

So many boomers have as close to 35 years of on-line experience... and we know a bit about the subject.

I’m going to have to end this argument and agree to disagree. I’ve listened to KAZG enough that the format isn’t my cup of tea. Good thing I have a “Yacht Rock” playlist I can play on Spotify. No need to be shackled by a fenced-in playlist.
