New KYW Jingles

KYW is apparently working in some new jingles. I liked the old ones but the new ones are OK. Anyone else care to comment?

I've heard the long version of the new jingle which celebrates their 40 years of ANATT. Nothing wrong with maintaining the same musical signature they've had since '65, but IMHO, they should be freshening the vocals up every couple of years. And that ancient sounding teletype has got to go.

The jingle for the 40th anniversary promo is catchy and the vocals are good.

I like the teletype. It enhances the all-news sound--theater of the mind. Change is not something that always goes over well in Philadelphia. Remember when Ch. 6 used a different arrangement of the "Move Closer to Your World" theme?

yeah, talk about change and channel 6. They only recently started to add fresh younger faces to their air staff. for years we saw all of them get greyer and older. Don't cruicify me, I like WPVI. but I wonder if they added young blood because NBC and CBS were freshning up and growing their on air staff while channel 6 stayed small and old. Anywho, kudos to WPVI.

Radio : Theatre of the Mind

I hate those 40th anniversary jingles. They sound so awful that I
have to turn down the radio while they're playing. First of all, they're
muddy. Second, the music bed sounds like it came from a CD called "no human musicians were harmed in the making of this disc" and it sounds VERY generic.

I realize that it actually uses the melody of the KYW jingle, but it manages
to sound like an off-the-shelf music bed.

On the other hand, I'd feel lost without that teletype sound effect. It makes KYW *instantly* identifiable (I can tune my bedside radio without looking
at it) and it's just somehow comforting.

On a related note, my credit union (disclaimer : they're also a client of mine in "real" life) is running ads on KYW that make GREAT use of sound effects to create an image, as few spots do today. Here's a sample :

[SFX : Door opens and closes]
VO : This is the office of the bank your money is in.
[SFX : Shoes clicking on a marble floor]
VO : This is the marble floor that the bank your money is in bought with the fees they charged you.
[SFX : Cash register]
VO : This is how the bank your money is in thinks of you.
[SFX : Large ship at sea]
VO : This is the yacht that the president of the bank your money is in bought with the money they saved by paying low rates on savings accounts.
[SFX : Airplane taking off]
VO : And this is the corporate jet that the president of the bank bought with the extra money the bank earned by charging higher interest rates on their mortgage loans.

I thought this was an incredibly creative use of radio as a purely audio medium.

Did anyone else hear the spots? They're for Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. And no, they aren't paying me to say ANY of this...I'm writing only as a radio listener.

It sounds about as up to date as a buggy whip. If that's theater of the mind, then it's certainly showing a black and white film. That rat-tat-tat disappeared from news rooms in that last century. If news is "new", it should reflect the times in which we live, not days gone by.

c'mon....let's all sing together: Catch the spirit, catch it on KYW. la la lalalala

Losing the teletype would be an enormous mistake. Do you have any idea how many people dialing around on a clock radio only know they've found KYW because of the teletype? They'd be nuts to lose it. It's one of the few things about any radio station in Philly that anyone can honestly say helps ratings by improving the station's visibility (or audibility. LOL.)

Kudos for what? Reporting the most murders and fires? Young or old, big or small, gray or jet black hair, local news sucks, and not just here, it's the same in every city. Kudos to WPVI for doing a better job at sucking than the other stations.
