New KZQX Link

Several of you tune in occasionally to KZQX Radio. We have migrated to a new server to accommodate a growing on-line audience. The old link works for now, but will go away in the near future. You can either go to www.kzqx.com and an imbedded Windows Media Player should start on your PC. Otherwise, you can use these links to listen with your favorite player.

Winamp: http://icecast2.hostingmembercenter.com/tunein.php/kzqx/playlist.pls
Windows Media Player: http://icecast2.hostingmembercenter.com/tunein.php/kzqx/playlist.asx
Real Player: http://icecast2.hostingmembercenter.com/tunein.php/kzqx/playlist.ram
QuickTime: http://icecast2.hostingmembercenter.com/tunein.php/kzqx/playlist.qtl

I'm listening right now (Good Friday morning) on Windows Media Player. A window with something called icecast2.hostingmembercenter pops up which is just a blank white screen, but the media player launches right away. Then just X out of the icecast2 window. Nice, full rich sound. I like the America's Original Classics moniker... reminds me of the old Original Hits slogan which I think may have been used by Westwood One in the '80s or early '90s.

What WEZV or KMGR are to Soft AC, and WGCY, KHOY, or Jones College Radio are to Easy Listening, this station could be the definitive standards station... songs which actually are standards, little quips about things long gone ("If you remember such-and-such, then you're our kind of listener"), and jingles sounding like they're straight out of the '60s. I'm adding KZQX to my favorites.

Thanks. The jingles are right out of the 1960's. We are really a local community radio station that serves Kilgore - Longview - Tyler, Texas. We were one if the first five LPFM stations in Texas to receive a Construction Permit. We think we were the second one to actually make it on the air. The web stream is secondary, but it amazes me how many people seem to tune in. The format model is emulating a decent MOR station of the early to mid 1960's without sounding like we fell asleep while doing it. For a bunch of volunteers running out of a garage, I think we do OK, but we are always trying to make it better. Thanks for tuning in.

I'd be curious about the window with the "icecast member center" box. I haven't seen that on any computer I've used. That’s the fun part about dealing with computers. Lots of things happen that you never dreamed of.

For most people, all they have to do is go to the web site www.kzqx.com and the music will start playing. That's because there is an imbedded Microsoft Windows Player as a part of the web site. A black or blue bar will appear at the top of the page with start, stop, pause and volume buttons. That doesn't seem to work on Macs or Linux boxes, but for the majority of people with computers, it is all they need to know. Otherwise you can click on the picture of the old radio or follow one of the links shown on the site, just below the old radio icon.

If you'd like to contact me, just click on the "Let Me Speak to the Manager" link or any of the numerous "Contact Us" links.

That works, too (but I thought that's what was going away).

The icecast2 box is the address of the link: http://icecast2.hostingmembercenter.com/tunein.php./kzqx/playlist.asx
It's just a blank white screen. Then another window pops up asking if you want to Open or Save the file. Clicking the Open button then opens up Windows Media Player. But the window with the blank white screen doesn't go away until you close out of it.

That could be because you're playing decent music most people can't hear over the air anymore in their own markets.

WEZV isn't AC, soft or otherwise. I wish people would stop trying to call it that.

All the links on our web site have been updated, so if that’s how you access it, there is nothing more you need to do.

The real problem is with people who get our stream through other sites. I think that may be about 50% of our on-line listeners. Many of those links are out of date. I've tried to notify as many of these sites as I can. Some like Real Player and Radio Tower were quick to update their links. Others like itunes and Receiva have not updated their sites, even though they were notified several weeks ago. At least, the last time I looked (April 11), the links were wrong. I know I have a bunch of people listening right now via itunes on our old stream.

My buddy runs an antique store in Seattle. He pipes in QX-FM from his computer and plays it as background music in his store.....

We're happy to have him. Seattle is a great town.

Tonight may be the last time NBC ever airs a new episode of "Chuck". This makes me sad. :(

What are the chances we'll be able to listen to KZQX in the car? Hasn't this technology been invented?

I've had several emails from people who are listening in their car via the Internet. They are using their cell phones or an EVDO card to do it. They just plug it into the car's AUX (MP3) jack and listen. We are even listed on the Nokia phone radio station guide. Since we are also on itunes, I assume that an iphone with the right app can get us too.

Better networks are coming. 4-G, AKA "Wi-Max," is a reality in some areas. Eventually, it will be commonplace.

Uh-oh. Me no speak geek.

I wasn't even willing to spend money on HD, but except for the 40s channel, they don't have anything in the area of standards I like. Escape would be close, but that's not al I want to hear.

Chuck: I've had no issues so far with the new streaming link. Sounds really solid! Keep it up! :)

That's good. Sometimes in our attempt to make things better, we actually make them worse, just in a different way. ;)

The truth is we were hitting the old server's capacity which was bumping people off way too often. Things seem better with the new one, at least so far. One of the problem with using the Internet as a method of delivery is, there is a LOT that can go wrong. Worse yet, it is very hard to figure out where a problem is. It could be anywhere in the world.
