NEW LAST.FM STATION ON 93.1 HD 2!

The former HD frequency of the breeding ground of AMP Radio back in its HD days, it's going to replace its current KFWB simulcast with a new one of a kind station based on the website Last.FM formulated on the LA area's Last.FM listening habits. A good idea? Very similar to Jelli, who takes the 10- Midnight spot on Live 105 in SF. It's finally good to see a radio station focused on what's popular on the internet...

Thats cool. So will there be different formats each day? or will the mix different styles of music. I'm a bit confused with this one. Sounds exciting.

I could have sworn the Radio-Info news page said Last.FM was going to be on HD-3. HD-2 would have been a better choice and push KFWB to HD-3.

If you use the Last.FM service, it has a feature that tags every song you play on your iPod or iTunes and charts it. I have a guess that they can sort these charts out by region and make a list with all the charts into one for the specific region, meaning the playlist would be based on what listeners in LA are listening to on Last.FM. Seems unique but would it work in an actually broadcast environment?

There is only 96 kilobits here to use. If they are going to cram 3 stations on 96 kilobits you end up with three stations that sound like absolute crap. I hope to god these people aren't that stupid.

Truthfully HD radio can be configured in such a way that you can do one decent sounding music format (like say Jack-FM) as the main station and then one marginal voice channel -- like a KFWB or some sort of talk format. Some stations push the music limit and do two music stations. KROQ does this (and I believe KOST) as well... on both stations I find it more acceptable to turn off the HD feed on the main station and listen to the analog signal (because the audio is dramatically better). If HD (configured with 3 stations) is the future of radio -- well there is no future.
