New line-up at KABC revealed soon - some will be shocked ... others surprised

This was the teaser headline at Don Barrett's LARadio site

New line-up at KABC revealed soon - some will be shocked ... others surprised and delighted ... and others disappointed

Anyone know what this is?

Isn't this the same site/proprietor that keeps promising/threatening that its demise is/was imminent? Send your $3.95 today or Marconi will call him home... Nothing @ LAR that isn't readily available here and elsewhere if you know where to look. I've already seen what Cumulus has done elsewhere with better signals - short of going all-polka, shock and surprise aren't possible.

Still a WIP (work in process) but appears to be - Doug and Teri in AM Drive, John Phillips for just one hour at 9a, Geraldo tape delayed 3 hours at 10a from his live show at WABC, no change with Sean at noon, Larry slides to 3p, and Levin goes from live at 3p now to tape-delayed at 6p starting in January. Petere moves to late evening from 9p to midnight. Red Eye Radio without Doug runs from Midnight to 3a, and then 2 hours of Imus (who has a great show BTW).

This is partially a reshuffling of the deck chairs. I would have paired Larry with Peter in PM drive (as they usually sound great at 8:50a when they do a couple minutes together each morning), kept John for the full 3 hours at 6p, and scanned the country for a new host I could bring in and groom for the 9p slot.

Another idea would have been to keep Imus live from 3a to 6a (an extra hour as his show is quite good), run Doug and Teri from 6a to 10a and that way get rid of the awkward 1 hour slot for John Phillips - who could then stay at 6p or be paired up with Larry at 3p, putting Peter at 6p or 9p.

I think they have to shed Mark Levin altogether. Having him live in PM drive did not work. Having him now on tape delay at 6p will not work.

Here is the video release of the new KABC lineup.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvaxfYQl6dY

LOL - I love it

Really! Toni Grant (one of my mother's favorites) was kind of hot...didn't know that.

"Seventy- nine, Yeah! That's where we shine..."

Horrible jingle.

Maybe so, but it did its job. I remember that jingle word for word and note-for-note a full 30 years later. Jingle writers don't care if it's good, they care that it is memorable. And I know KABC's 1981 lineup better than I know their 2011 lineup.

I some vacation relief in KABC news that year (81) and I have to say that Toni Grant was only hot to people who were 40+ and wore white shoes and white belts (think of the salesman on WKRP).

Well, she looked hot in that brief clip. For the record, I'm definitely 40+, but do not wear white shoes, and....where did I put my white belt, anyway? I can't see...Dag Nab it! Where did I put my spectacles?

You have got to be kidding. This is the big move???? What losers they are and continue to be at that station. If they need to ever have a hope at getting out of the ratings cellar, get rid of Tilden, Get rid of Elder, get rid of Phillips, get rid of Levin, get rid of Hannity. Build a new talk station around Doug and Teri with hosts that focis on local issues not Washington politics. But shuffling the same boring hosts who have only succeeded in driving KABC into the grave is nothing about nothing.

If I'm not mistaken, Phillips and Elder ARE local, and I have heard Phillips talk about local issues. Also, I don't know about Levin, but I'm pretty sure Hannity gets big ratings, so don't expect them to mess with that any time soon.

The KABC brass are masters of deck chair rearranging, but of course what they need is a captain that can steer the ship away from icebergs.

You may not believe it or like it, but Hannity is a major radio personality across the country. If HE can't get good ratings at KABC, no one can.

Wasn't Levin a local host on WABC before he went national?

Levin and Hannity get good ratings everywhere EXCEPT in Los Angeles (same reason the powerhouse Glenn Beck, Michael Savage and the rest all failed here). But I understand if KABC is under some sort of contractual situation of being under the ABC conglomerate that they need to carry these national hosts, but what is the story of Elder, Tilden and Phillips. None of them can draw an audience. Even the idiotic poster boys for celebral palsy Tim Conway Jr and Bill Carroll outdraw them.

KABC management has to realize that the time slot isn't the problem, it is the hosts themselves. But i guess without the Dodger money anymore there is nothing left in the pot (calm down Tim Conway Jr) to try and go after new talent or to make any real changes. Just reshuffle the deck chairs on the titanic seems to be their mantra.

They should put themselves out of misery and just change formats. It worked brilliantly for KLSX

I believe it and I know it to be true...in other markets. But if anyone got three hours of "big ratings" at KABC everyday, the station as a whole would be doing better than a 0.7.

It's not Hannity, it's the station. If you moved Hannity to KFI next week, he'd be huge in L.A. If you moved Rush to KABC, it'd help the station, but Rush's numbers would be a lot lower.

I do agree with Michael. But I still think that KABC framed itself as one of those stations (like KIEV) where everything is Washington Politics and nothing local. Once you've lost an audience it's tough getting it back.

Take today for example, we have a mass shooting and J&K are actually talking to workers at the building. KABC is talking about Obama ripping up the constitution. Who do you think people in LA are going to listen to?

Having Larry in the afternoon will not solve that here because of his unwavering obsession with Washington Politics (primarily since he has aspirations of going there) and he used to cover nothing but Hillary Clinton even as breaking news was happening in LA.

KABC management is to blame.
