NEW LOCAL SUB CHANNEL ACTION(S) THIS YEAR

Most of the sub-channels in Atlanta are on non-network stations, but WOW we've really seen
some action so far this year. IF WE JUST HAD ANTENNA TV.

WSB 2.2 was Retro TV but upgraded to Me-TV on June 1.
Now Retro TV has moved to a sales only LP channel 16.3 (which is still better than sales)
Religious channel 57 now has My Family TV on 57.2 and is only religious about half the time.

26 WTBS-LP and 32 WANN-LP pretty much have the same junk on all 10 channels. But they
do have THIS-TV, TUFF-TV and a couple movie channels along with 3 spanish subs.

Are things improving or getting any better in your city/area?

I don't follow the Spanish language or religions/infomercial stations but for the others in Phoenix:

KTVK (indie-3) has THIS-TV on 3.2.
KPHO (CBS5) shows weather/traffic on 5.1.
AZTV (indie-7) has RTV on 7.1 and just added ME-TV on 7.2.
KAET (PBS-8) has Create on 8.2 and World on 8.3.
KSAZ (Fox-10) simulcasts its 10.1 signal on 10.2 due to poor coverage on the main signal.
KPHX (NBC-12) shows weather/traffic on 12.1.
KNXV (ABC-15) shows weather/traffic on 15.1.
ION-51 has Qube on one of its subs and something else on another. Never watch it so don't know.
44.4 is some sort of family channel showing mostly public domain movies and old TV shows.
61-CW has no subs.

A few errors fixed, plus a note on 10.2.

Another error fixed and clarification on the same channel.

Phoenix does pretty well with subchannels. Leaving off the artifact channels, the color bar and advertising slide channels, the audio-only channel, the SD simulcasts of HD stations, and the soundless repeated infomercial channel that now rolls vertically like some old 60's/70's channel, I get 50 unique programming streams from local stations. It wasn't too long ago that you didn't get that many channels on cable.

Yes, nearly half of them are Spanish, and a dozen or so are religious (including more than a half dozen stations are both Spanish and religious), but I get about two dozen secular, English-language stations, only two of which are dedicated to shopping or infomercials.

In a couple of months, MeTV will move to 7.2 from 7.3 in Phoenix, which means that market will lose RTV (unless they get another affiliate, of course).

What Comcast has here
KMBC and METV
KCWE and This TV
FOX4KC and Antenna TV
KCPT and Create/Kids
KSHB and Action Weather Plus
ION and Qubo/Life but Comcast dosen't offer those 2 yet and Metro Sports 2
KSHB will be adding Live Well Network at sometime.
Metro Weather doesn't have any digital Sub Channels yet so doesn't KCTV5 and KSMOTV yet and alaso KMCI doesn't to but it's in the city where The Cool TV is from.

.....back from vacation.

Taking a look at the L.A. subs, there are a lot of Ethnic/Language stations......looks like the
most in the U.S.A. I find this surprising as I would expect N.Y., Chicago and San Francisco
to be more diverse than L.A. Any thoughts on this?

I've never lived in Chicago but have lived in NYC, L.A. and S.F. San Francisco has the world's largest Chinese population outside China itself (probably including Taiwan as well) and people there can live an entire life speaking only Chinese dialects and observing Chinese customs. It is much less likely in L.A. and NYC as those cities mix ethnic pots much more. You still hear accents but the vast ESL population has some command of English. This may be changing a bit in L.A. as the Spanish speaking population reaches epidemic proportions and it becomes possible for them to live in the barrios with no English necessary.

And it most likely is associated with the economic status of each ethnic group as advertisers want to reach people who have the means to buy their products.

It always cracks me up to hear a long-winded commercial in English and then at the very end "we speak Spanish".

From a non-scientific perspective I think L.A. has always been much more accepting of ethnic diversity than the other cities mentioned. It simply hasn't been a big deal in SoCal (save for the more recent problems associated with illegal immigration).

Might as well throw Seattle in the mix:

KWDK 42.1 (DAYSTAR)

KUNS 51.1 (UNIVISION)

There is one other group on Channel 44, and use 4 channels but they are in bankruptcy and about to be sold so the programming will probably switch shortly. They currently air AMERICA ONE on -1, KOREAN, MANDARIN and JAPANESE programs on -2, -3, -4.

KBTC 28.1, .2, .3 broadcast PBS programming out of Tacoma. Not sure what they broadcast as I live far north of there and can't get their digital signal with my antenna.

This is the listing as to what I pickup OTA in Gary Indiana (Chicago market), & does not include channels I don't pickup at all. I have both the virtual channel & the RF channel they broadcast from:

VC RF
2.1 12 WBBM-TV (CBS) (CBS 2) (1080i HD)

5.1 29 WMAQ-TV (NBC) (NBC 5) (1080i HD)
5.2 Chicago Nonstop (formerly Weather Plus & local weather radar when Weather Plus was eliminated)
5.3 Universal Sports

7.1 7 (T) 44 (M) WLS-TV (ABC) (ABC 7) (720p HD) Note: T= translator M= main channel
7.2 Livewell Network in 720p HD
7.3 Livewell Network in SD (formerly Accuweather)

9.1 19 WGN-TV (CW) (1080i HD)
9.2 Antenna TV (Formerly The Tube & LATV)

11.1 47 WTTW (PBS) (1080i HD)
11.2 WTTW Prime (same as WTTW 11.1, but all primetime shows, all the time, & no children's programming)
11.3 Create
11.4 V-Me

13.1 4 WOCK-CD (Mega TV) (Most difficult to get since it broadcasts at 300 watts for a VHF-Lo channel)
13.2 WOCH-CA simulcast (Arirang)
13.3 LATV
13.4 America One

18.1 18 WHMW-LD (World Harvest TV) (licensed to Gary, IN & covers mainly northern Lake County, IN)

20.1 21 WYCC (PBS) (1080i HD)
20.2 WYCC in SD
20.3 Mhz Worldview

23.1 39 WWME-LD (MeTV)
23.2 WWME-LD simulcast (for now)
23.3 WWME-LD simulcast (for now)

25.1 25 W25DW-D (HSN)
25.2 infomercials

26.1 27 WCIU (Independent) (The U) (720p HD)
26.2 The U Too (Formerly FBT, the brokered ethnic program channel on 26.6)
26.3 WWME-LD simulcast (MeTV) (now the national MeTV, but was all classic comedy for Chicago)
26.4 WMEU-CA simulcast (MeToo) (now the Chicago MeTV, but was all classic drama for Chicago)
26.5 This TV

32.1 31 WFLD (Fox) (My Fox Chicago) (720p HD)

38.1 43 WCPX (Ion Television) (720p HD) (Note: 38.4 was Worship, but was dropped when the agreement wasn't renewed)
38.2 Qubo
38.3 Ion Life

40.1 40 WESV-LD (Estrella TV) (formerly a TBN analog translator)
40.2 Don't know yet, but supposedly, it'll carry Inmigrante TV

44.1 45 WSNS (Telemundo) (1080i HD)
44.2 Inmigrante TV

50.1 51 WPWR-TV (My Network TV) (720p HD) (Licensed to Gary, IN, but marketed as a Chicago station)

56.1 17 WYIN (PBS) (720p HD) (COL Gary, IN, & programmed as a NW IN station) (one of 2 full power stations that doesn't cover the entire market)
56.2 WYIN simulcast, until they figure out what to put on this channel (720p HD)
56.3 Lakeshore Kids (PBS Kids GO) (480i widescreen)
56.4 WYIN simulcast, until they figure out what to put on this channel (480i widescreen)

Supposedly, the Indiana Channel is planned for all Indiana PBS stations, & one subchannel is set aside for it on WYIN. Also, money is the reason they transit out of Cedar Lake, IN & not Chicago, but the FCC did approve their original request to locate on the Sears Tower, over the objections of WTTW & WYCC, out of fear that WYIN would steal pledge dollars from them. Plus WYIN's COL is Gary, IN, & they get discounts on their programming, while WTTW & WYCC must pay full price, being licensed to Chicago.

57.1 30 WDCI-LD (Daystar)

60.1 50 WXFT (Telefutura) (1080i HD)
60.2 WXFT in SD

62.1 36 WJYS (Independent) (brokered religious programming & infomercials)
62.2 WEDE-CA simulcast
62.4 WJYS 2 (same as 62.1, but on a 3 hour delay)

66.1 38 WGBO-DT (Univision) (1080i HD)

Now if I had a good deep fringe UHF antenna with pre-amp pointed at South Bend, IN, I could get the following stations regularly, though South Bend full power stations are overall not utilizing their subchannels.

16.1 42 WNDU (NBC) (1080i HD)
16.2 WNDU simulcast, & they're happy with it

22.1 22 WSBT-TV (CBS) (1080i HD)
22.2 SBT 2 (Independent)
22.3 Local weather radar

28.1 28 WSJV (Fox) (720p HD)

34.1 35 WNIT (PBS) (1080i HD) (PBS East)
34.2 WNIT (PBS) (locally programmed PBS, when it's local. It's on the bird most of the time, not in HD, & on the bird, it's zoomed in)

I can get WSBT-TV most nights with my VHF/UHF combo antenna with pre-amp pointed at Chicago. Can sometimes get WSJV too & once in a blue moon, WNIT. WNDU only comes in during tropo with my current antenna, but would be regular had they returned to 16, but WYIN being on 17 prevented that. Cedar Lake (WYIN's tower location) & South Bend are about 60 miles apart, & short-spaced had WNDU returned to 16.
