NEW log 10/19/2016

A new Utah station...I've been trying for this one for several years with no luck.

1210 - KHKR Washington, UT; fair with most of an ID at 2259.50 PT - "Sports Radio KUNF Washington-St. George." Into ESPN at 2300. NEW #723, suspecting 10KW day power at 746 miles. UT #32 heard from here, out of a possible 39.

When you try to receive a specific station for such a long time,
do you ever begin to wonder if it is really there,
or do you usually hear just enough of that format sound,
like crowd noise or a screaming announcer, to keep you going?

I just try certain frequencies on certain nights. The only other hint of KHKR/KUNF that I have gotten was some faint ESPN (parallel to KIRO-710) under KHAT Laramie one night years ago, but it never came up for an ID or local information. No ID/local ads/information, no log in this DXer's mind.
1210 is usually littered with KHAT Laramie, or CFYM Saskatchewan, with KRSV, KMIA and KEBR also heard occasionally. KGYN is rare but can also be pulled out once in a while.

I take pretty much the same approach as you when I'm at home. Bandscans when I'm traveling. As for KGYN, I've heard them a few times on trips to California. Mostly in So-Cal.

In any case, congratulations on your latest catch!
