New Log again this morning 9/26/13

Got another new log, two days in a row!

700 - KALL North Salt Lake, UT; ID "ESPN 700"; ad for Utah Toyota Dealers at 0601 PDT 9/26. NEW #487, 50kw day power, 706 miles. Wanted station, now I have it!

Also 774 JOUB, 972 HLCA and 1566 HLAZ with poor-fair JJ and KK signals from the Asian markets...

I'm surprised you hadn't heard KALL by now, as you're only 80 miles farther than me. It's a nightly regular with a fairly good signal here (dBu in the 40s is common on my Tecsuns), easily pushing aside splatter from local 690 XEWW. They can even sometimes be faintly heard in the middle of the day with a very good setup. Maybe their pattern favors me more than you?

Yes, KALL's pattern doesn't like my area. KXLX is the ESPN that usually comes in. But what's weird is that I've gotten WBBM countless times, WCKY a couple times in '08 and '09, and not ONCE have I gotten WLW. With 500kw, it would be as strong as my local 1000 probably, but a good Midwest evening should make it easy to grab it.

It's not just the pattern, there's the Cascade mountains doing their job to reduce some signals. East of the mountains the two ESPN stations (KXLX Spokane and KALL Salt Lake City) compete with each other. West of the Cascades the only 700 khz stations I hear with any regularity are KGRV Oregon (religion) and KXLX Spokane. And KIRO splash.

Agreed. East of the mountains, 1570 turns into almost-graveyard soup, probably full of LP nighttime power stations. Same with 1600 - way more stations noted even at night. One nighttime session in Yakima on 1600 noted KVRI, KUBA and about eight others, all mixing.
