New Log yesterday 2/15/2012

I got a new log yesterday at sunset!

1280: KZNS Salt Lake City, UT with ID "97.5 The Zone" seconds before power cut at 6PM MT time, sports pregame show. New #440, 688 miles, 50kw. Also got 1430 KLO at that same time. Was looking for 1370 KSOP today and found weak music, but no ID (too weak).

That's COOL.

I personally don't do much active DXing on AM anymore. Simply because there's really not much to listen to on AM anymore (beyond the various interference problems, etc.) But when I'm out camping or somewhere far away from the noise and static, I'll bring a REALLY GOOD battery operated radio (with extra batteries.)

My girls, the oldest who used to be fascinated by all of Dad's radios, DXing and talk of the good old days (she's approaching her teen years) is now kind of "Meh" about radio. As heartbreaking as it can be to us old school radio geeks, she's only a reflection of her generation. She may find some value in traditional terrestrial broadcast radio later on in her life. Or maybe it will all just disappear by time she becomes a young woman.

You and I are both aware with the level of choices and availability from digitally delivered sources these days alone, it's days are numbered. But WHAT number is anyone's guess. Maybe there will be a "digital-skip" phenomena......

The bad news is that most of the new generation of kids and teens have an iPod, and earbuds. Some of them go "ummmm...." on what an AM radio is. If at all they only know an FM radio, and only know the local top 40 or hard rock station, not a station several hundred miles out.

One thing: schools need to teach about how AM/FM/NOAA, etc. are great sources of entertainment and information. Was looking on NASA's website a few hours ago and saw a lesson plan that was about AM DXing...to middle school kids! Maybe if more teachers do this kind of stuff then we could be sparking another interest in the next generation...picking up an AM station from hundreds of miles out (the easy ones like KSL, KEX, KFBK, KGO, etc), or they just might snooze on that one... ::)

And I try to go outside EVERY time I DX. I live about a half-mile from Downtown Bellevue, and even though I have KIXI, KKNW and KXPA as "next door neighbors", I still DX in this environment, and have been getting some great stuff!

We are the last generation of DXers. Between all the devices and new media (Ipods-pandora--etc) and the dying of AM radio, it's only a matter of time.

Young people would only listen if KSL, KEX, KFBK, KGO, etc are playing the latest uncensored hits from Lil' Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Insane Clown Posse.

And these teachers would have to get used to "HEY! There ain't no 810 or 1190 on this stupid ass radio! The thing I got only gets from 88-108. And then there's some 54, 60, 80, 100 160 s--t in fine print on the other side of the dial......."

Another thing is to widen the kids' horizons from Nicki Minaj and Eminem uncensored to different music types, like blues, jazz, classic rock, oldies. But usually that won't happen... Looks like I did correct, "they just might snooze on DXing", and of course they will, because they won't "widen their horizon" and try something new.

Another thing: You've probably seen kids with iPods and yawning in an antique shop or mall, I have too. Widen their horizons, and talk not only about the Xbox, PS3, iPod, laptop, etc. but what it was like DECADES before they were born. History lessons also work, but going and picking up some old, early 1900s "artifacts" might spark an interest in the new generation...

Hey Fellow radio enthusiasts, DXers!

Just a brief intro - I haven't posted here in quite a while, thus me having to create a new account. I've been roaming about the board for about 5 years now keeping updated with what is going on in the wonderful world of radio. Very heart warming to be amongst radio people.. haha Makes me feel sane when I can mention DX or TX without getting any weird looks. I am about the only person to carry a radio with me casually walking around town (or a walkman for that matter).

Anyway, this sparked my interest in creating another account to replay to this topic of the younger generation and radio (or New Generation VS. Radio haha). I happen to be involved in radio myself, have been since the early 90s. Now I can finally say that I am doing my part and getting involved in a youth radio project in town via LPFM. We are outreaching to the community so kids (7-18 Years old) can have the opportunity to have hands on experience in interviewing techniques, production skills, and on-air experience. It is so amazing how responsive the youth are once they fully understand what it is all about. The insight that they have is amazing once they open up (They come from different backgrounds). So hopefully this (and other LPFM Community stations) will give a good impression on how much magic and power/influence - and meaning terrestrial radio can be. Just some things I thought were important to add. I look forward to intereacting here more often! :)

Unless you force them, all they'll want to play is uncensored Eminem, 50 Cent , Nikki Minaj and Usher. Try to widen their horizons, and you'll be fine. What shows do you want to do with the youth? Welcome to the boards! You'll have lots of fun...

Musically and culturally, I haven't seriously DXed the AM dial since maybe 1977, either, lol.

But the times I do spin dial nowadays, I find those regionals can be pretty cool. You have to wait a good hour or more for an actual ID, but Crain's 1280 catch did evoke memories of maybe my best 'catch' here since I moved to NE PA.

Apropos of nothing, pitch dark (maybe 10PM), and with no sign of WADO from NYC or Berwick's WFBS, it was WFYC from Alma Michigan kicking in with an ID.

I doubt they were running their 50 nighttime watts at the time, hi.

Go get 'em, Crain!

Hi Travis,

That is really cool to hear you are into radio at that age, especially in today's age. Sounds like you are really into the hobby. I can remember my fascination with electronics/radio ever since I was a child. I would DX TV/FM stations and make DJ Mix tapes for friends. I remember my aunt knew a DJ at a local station. I took a tour of the small town AM station when I was only 5. I think that is when it really hit me I wanted to be in the broadcast field. I don't think it will ever go away, it is in my blood. :p I also love to DX FM/SW and AM bands. I own a Grundig G6 Aviator edition, so I love to tune into the aircraft bands also. Used to love to DX TV bands, but it is no fun since most stations converted to HDTV. Some fun things to do is tune into a distant station when they are having a local talk show and call in to hear yourself on the air :p I know on shortwave there is more of a delay.. I heard myself on WBCQ for about 15 seconds once I got off the phone. Radio is awesome! :D :D

Nice to meet ya.

Hi Crainbebo,

Yeah it seems like that. I know personally being in my 30s, I am guilty of stereotyping young people. The more I interact with the youth though, the more that stereotype is broken, and the more I potential I see in them. I agree though, it makes me sick to see what crap is thrown at them. The music I have no problems with.. everyone has their own personal taste, but the lyrics are so filthy and negative. It makes me sick knowing some kids are listening to this. So yeah, I plan on introducing some music that is more clean and kosher. I am only the producer so I will simply guide them, but they will be in control of the show. I am there to make sure things don't get out of hand, keep the show sounding good, and teach them knowledge in producing a radio show, interviewing skills, and hopefully install some self worth in them. :) It will be a talk show with a few bits of music in there. I had planned on bringing in some young singers and musicians also to promote them from time to time. Should be fun.
