New LP AM radio station for Plymouth?

I haven't seen this on the board yet; if already posted my apologies...

Radio hoped to wave in tourists
Low-power station to beckon drivers
By Emily Sweeney, Globe Staff | December 17, 2006

Plymouth tourism officials plan to launch a new radio station next spring, in an effort to steer passing motorists toward visiting America's Hometown.

Hanks said an application has been submitted to the Federal Communications Commission to claim 1620 (the year the Mayflower landed in Massachusetts) on the AM dial as the station's future home.

The target audience will be people in cars. "We're looking to capture motorists driving south on Route 3, and in on Route 44,"

The low-frequency station will provide no-frills news and information -- such as directions to Plymouth Rock and other tourist attractions in the area,

HERE'S YOUR BIG CHANCE TO BE THE VOICE OF PLYMOUTH!!!!

Who will be the voice of 1620 AM? That remains to be heard. Hanks said he's contemplating holding tryouts to find the voice of Plymouth's new little radio station.

Ed Perry and Bobbi Clark of WATD FM are on the 2006 BOARD OF DIRECTORS for the Chamber of Commerce

Ah, a Traveler's Info station. Vermont has quite a few, emanating from rest areas/tourist info centers...

Years ago I remember going to Niagara Falls (slowly I turned) and found a TIS, CFLZ ("or, if you prefer,
C-F-L-Zed. C-Falls"). I think it was 91.9 at the time. Tourist info.

1620...ah yes, also the name of a restaurant in Plymouth where my Dad used to go for harbormaster
association meetings.
And of course there is the Radio Voice of America's Hometown (but I guess far too big to be used as a TIS),
Easy Ninety-nine........poinnnnnnnnnnt-onnnnnnnnnne.....

There are some personalities down in Plymouth and Duxbury who would be perfect "voices" for the station.

As much as I like WATD, I'm hoping that their connection to the board doesn't make the new station an
extension of WATD:

"Ed Perry and Bobbi Clark of WATD FM are on the 2006 BOARD OF DIRECTORS for the Chamber of Commerce"

Could you imagine Mach Bell of The Joe Perry Project on the air? He lives in Duxbury, I believe. How about
Steve Tyler showing up to guest host? Man...they could put it on the internet and get tons of listeners...

this isn't much different than Massport using 530 for traffic and info, and since it is going to be automated with about 5 mile radius, I don't see much use for it other than 50 grand off taxpayers money going down the drain. I think we all know what Plimouth Plantation and the Mayflower is about.

Since thier target audience is on route 3 and 44, and the radius is 5 miles, and say a car on Rt 3 is going 50 MPH, that means the most time they are going to have to sell to them is maybe 8 minutes. That makes for short segments that people will hear in under 4 minutes.

I don't think I'll be using a pre set for this one, but it might make for interesting DXing over water.

But, Neggy, don't you think it would act also as a resource for tourists who are already staying in the Plymouth area to direct them to area special events?
I've heard a lot of talk about this for a year now, but I'm still not sure on the specifics on what info, exactly, will be transmitted on this new station.

who stays in Plymouth?

at best the place is a day trip.

a chip of rock, a replica of a sailboat, and some thatch huts.

From Late June to Labor Day there is interest, then it's dead till Thanksgiving. Do you think they will use it to direct the Native Americans to the riot staging area?

Ok you can plug restaurants, and maybe motels, the Mayflower II and the Plantation.
Special Events.. OK you can do directions and parking. But once again what do you do for the other 9 months?

I guess it doesn't matter that a local station is attempting to provide programming that MIGHT help tourists enjoy Plymouth...not to mention the surrounding communities in the area? ???

At least SOMEBODY is attempting to try something different? :-\

Too bad we can't give the owners a chance to 'test drive the format' and see if it works...before we pick 'em apart!
