New LPFM applications on 93.5 & 101.7 FM Cleveland

It will be interesting to see if these applications get approved. Four companies have filed for 101.7 FM and one for 93.5 FM. The 93.5 could be tricky being between WAKR and a strong Canadian on that frequency. 101.7 FM makes more sense for Cleveland and I hope one gets approved.

Do you think that any of the applicants for these LPFMs really know how little they cover if operated legally?

I believe these applicants are going after niche audiences. Cleveland already has a LPFM in WOVU/95.9 FM. It covers the African-American audience well on the east side with unique programming. Two of these applicants are Hispanic-based and could bring a Spanish format to the west side of town.

Ugh! Not again!

I complained back in the day because someone (one of these applicants possibly) wanted to sign on a station on 101.7, which would have affected my reception of WHOF, which I was listening to at that time. However, since then an iHeart station signed on the same frequency (was repeating WGAR at the time), creating a bunch of interference to WHOF and popping in its place at times that I eventually quit listening.

Now 93.5?! Go figure. I guess everyone is out to pollute the few fringe area stations that I listen to with interference or wipe them out completely. Besides, once you start heading up towards Lake Erie, there's another station somewhere in that area that starts to come in as WAKR's FM repeater fades out (just north of SR 87), so that would really limit 93.5's usage in Cleveland to the west side or the downtown district.

Also, not to mention WBBG in Niles was another station that I used to listen to, and used to get it all the way out in Broadview Heights, until it was wiped out by what is now known as Real 106.1, and 99.1 (BIN) splatters onto 98.9 WMXY, a station in Youngstown.

Hope the 95.3 application gets denied or modified to aim as far away as possible from WAKR's fringe contour. Of course, I wouldn't be complaining as much if the soft AC format of WHOF or WAKR was present on a full power station in Cleveland. Instead, we have several stations with today's brain-rotting pop music.

Someone should have applied for 102.9 instead of 93.5 FM. The WAKR translator is still listenable as far north as Cuyahoga Hts on a good radio. The Soft AC fills a niche, although I hear changes could be coming to that station soon. Let's just say they won't be as "soft".

102.9 for WAKR wouldn't work as it's too close to a full power station in Youngstown. Plus, WHK has already applied for a FM repeater on that frequency from Seven Hills.

Well I'm surprised that their soft AC has lasted as long as it has. IIRC, it started at the beginning of 2020 when they switched from talk. Never listened to their talk format, but I did listen prior to then when they played oldies. What format do you think they'll shift to? Will their soft AC end up on 107.3, perhaps as a HD-2 sub?

Probably some type of AC, just not as soft or as gold based. Not sure on the HD subs. It would be nice to have WAKR on WNWV HD2 IMO. "Soft Hits" had a nice run and I enjoyed listening to it.

As far as 102.9, WHK does have an application there but reverted back to 102.5 after being silent for some time. They shouldn't have both frequencies. Even with 102.9 Youngstown and 102.7 Sandusky, I think a very LPFM could work in western Cuyahoga County, outside the fringes of the Y-Town station.

93.5 would have to deal with 93.7 in Lake County and 101.7 would have to deal with 101.5, also in Lake County. Not sure both signals would go far.

I'm hearing a few new additions to WAKR, like Melissa Etheridge's I'm The Only One and Pat Benatar's Love Is A Battlefield. Sightly more modern selections with a bit more upbeat to them. They're probably slowly moving up to the Soft Rock 102.1 era, and may eventually drop the more softer, obscure tunes. So far I can't complain.
