New LPFM Applications

There are 10 new applications for LPFM broadcasts across the state: REC Filing Window Application Tracking System | REC Networks

For Albuquerque a new station on 91.1 is proposed from the New Mexico Black Leadership Counsel. The proposed site is at the offices off of Gibson near San Mateo where the 100 watt signal will cover mostly areas south of I-40 and east of I-25 including the UNM Knob Hill area and what is locally known as the "international district" as well Kirtland AFB. Presumably the station will target the African American population. Of course KMGG-LP already does that as well so the question is can both these stations get enough support. More info is here: https://fccdata.org/?facid=788248

Elsewhere there are applications in Cimarron, Columbus, Gallup, and Roswell from community organizations. Farmington, Las Vegas, and Santa Fe have applications from religious organizations. There is also one from Spaceport America to be licensed to Upham, NM. However they are under investigation for alleged pirate broadcasts last year: Spaceport America facing millions in fines after being accused of ‘pirate radio’ broadcasting That could be a factor in whether this application gets approved or not.

I'm astonished anyone found an empty channel in the city, considering all the translators that sprang up in recent years.

(I think autocorrect got you - it's Nob Hill.)

I guess it depends on what they do with it.

Last year that might not have been the case as KEZF in Grants was broadcasting a 1kW signal off of Mt. Taylor similar to KANM 90.3 which can be heard decently in the eastern parts of town. They also briefly had a CP to increase power to over 3kW which would have made it the strongest signal from the west but they later replaced it with another CP to move off of the mountain at 92kW covering only the Grants area to avoid any interference problems with the new KANW station being built in Espanola. So with those two stations in the north and west at a great distance and KQLV and KFLQ on the crest preventing any local use of that frequency it could be considered a safe enough space to use as a LPFM or translator. Currently if I get anything on 91.1 it is the Santa Fe translator for KANW-HD2 which will be displaced by the new Espanola station further north. I guess in theory a LPFM in the north valley or westside could use 90.3 or 89.5 as there is a coverage gap from the west mesa to I-25 from any Mt. Taylor broadcast, but that could still have some interference issues that could make it too risky. I'm sure this station will likely be heard in most of the city as KMGG-LP is and even KQUQ-LP in the south valley could be picked up on 102.1 mostly (signal was weak north of I-40) before translator K271CP for KNMM 1150 was built in 2017 creating a big mess on that frequency which now also has the KEMR translator on Sandia pointed east but still spills over into the city.

If you look at Radio-Locator (I know, I know), KEMR (K271DC) has a CP to change the directional pattern on 102.1 to cover all of ABQ and not just the spillover.
