New Magic 107.3 AirTeam!

Let's give a great Jacksonville welcome back to radio legend Tony Mann who will be returning to the airwaves this Monday - Valentine's day in the 3-8 slot! Mike Perry will host 11-3. I'm assuming AM drive is a position to still fill. Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing what is being billed "The Original Magic AirTeam." Mike Perry is a name that I recall. I guess if he winds up sounding familiar to me, I would have had heard him somewhere either in NYC or Miami.

I have some more info. The announcement is in All Access a few hours after I broke the story..hehhehe. That WOLL connection I made a few weeks ago is alive and well as Mike Perry is joining from sister station WOLL. It turns out I am very familiar with Mike and I believe he will be a great addition to the Magic team - perfect for middays if you ask me.

Also. Tony Mann is actually on the air tonight - the first voice on Magic, a little sneak peak. Welcome back, Tony...you were missed!

Congrats to Tony Mann - Good to have him back on in Jax! He should be a great fit for Magic 107-3! CC is probably going to VT Mike Perry from WOLL - If he's still on the air there - that would be my guess. Best of Luck to the new "Original" airstaff - Let's hope it stays original for a while! lol

I have been listening to the station for the last little bit...too many sudden changes going from one song to another for them to be voice tracking in Mike Perry. If any case it is going to be reverse and his Jacksonville shift will be live while the WOLL KOOL 105.5 will be voiced track as he is still on air there as well. That is my thoughts.

Anyways glad to see them adding air talent to the station and actually going to fill it the right way unlike the old KOOL 100.7 did by ignoring middays.

As for the morning show I hope it is a name the area knows very well either it be Tom Murphy, Dave Scott or someone else that knows this format well.

BTW...it sounds like the Mic might be live and ready to go....lol!j

Well, one thing is clear and it’s that voice tracking has gotten a lot better, sounding more natural without the time obsessions. As a listener, I never understood the need to hear it was a Saturday or a Sunday or the weekend. If I couldn’t figure that on my own…gees….tell me something I don’t know!

The usual amount of time you can expect to hear host participation in a format such as Greatest Hits is around 5, maybe 6 times an hour averaging relatively little time to really execute anything. But it’s the world of PPM and like it or not or even believe it or not, listeners get turned off when the chit-chat stops the music.

With such little talent participation outside of morning drive, it’s no wonder voice tracking has caught on as it has. But you know, I think it comes down to not only the radio industry having to reinvent itself both for economic and listener preference reasons but talent has had to do the same if they want to stay in their job or even be considered for one.

It’s no longer a nice set of pipes and a good sense of humor that guarantees anything. Today, listener impressions are not always made on the air whether live or not. Let’s say Billy Joel is going to do a show in Jax and one of the Magic jocks airs a quick interview. How many people actually hear that right then and there? But post it on the website in a YouTube type stream with some added comments from the talent and those impressions for talent AND the station multiply big time.

I look at someone like Tony Mann who no doubt had to reinvent himself too given he’s been around the block a few times. What I heard the other night wasn’t the Tony from WAPE but rather someone who was able to make an impression and even be relevant in mere seconds. He got it and he has a gig now…good for him!

Mike Perry’s blog is warm and inviting chock full of personal stories and well-wishes to listeners. Radio is a personal medium. It’s just taken a different approach than what we remember as banter with a caller. I like Mike and I’m pretty sure I met him at charity event in s Fla. I’m happy middays wasn’t abandoned this time too!

The music and overall sound of the station have changed for the better. Earlier on they sounded too much like Eagle. Maybe they thought that was the way to get noticed. I applaud what they are doing, especially going a bit deeper into 60’s and 70’s pop. The format took an enormous hit for a market our size as it never resurfaced timely. So I think what they are doing now is actually taking a few steps back to give the station the identity it needs to have a fighting chance.

As far as the morning team goes, unless someone beats me to it, I’ll post that info once it becomes official. Good hearing from you Josh. I consider you a R.I. friend and I don’t seem to have many of them here. LOL. Take care, It’s been a very long journey seeing this format come to Jax.

I don’t discount anybody, especially if they show they have adjusted to the “new ways.” Having knowledge of oldies no longer applies as Greatest Hits is not oldies as we remember it but rather pop-oriented hits averaging easily 10-15 – 20 years “newer” where Cool 96.9 left off. It’s a tightrope. A few more song choices here and there and you can have a station that appeals to 55+ only. Besides music selection, picking the right talent is probably equally as critical.

Consider the audience Tony Mann had in the 90’s on WAPE. The plan ( I would think) is to attract significant enough numbers of those 18-25 females who are now all grown-up and who will respond to nostalgia. It’s human nature as we get older to gravitate to those things that made us feel good in our more youthful days.

It’s one reason AC is so often gold-based and it’s because their typical listeners respond well to the older tunes. But as we all know, given format restrictions in AC and what Cox Radio interpreted as classic hits, there were easily hundreds of songs no longer heard in our market. That left what I always believed to be sizeable numbers of listeners who just settled and didn’t have a station they could call their own.

Maybe now you all can understand why I believed Greatest Hits and AC make such great sister stations. I always thought it made better sense to have a lock on the upper-end money demo in your cluster instead of splitting it with a competitor who sees opportunity if you don't react to changing times. . Oh well.

I can certainly understand why a PD would be more inclined to hire talent like Tony Mann or even drawing from Top 40 of the past or even today’s AC. If even the average Cool 96.9 listener age was 35 in the 90's, it would probably be far too risky to engage in a talent reincarnation of what was then than what was at sister WAPE or similiar formats elsewhere but really who knows.

I’ve heard the Mo & Sally program featured on WOLL. Personally, I hope something like that is what comes to WJGH. I would think the morning program would be live and local. Maybe for reasons I can’t see that won’t be but I guess we’ll have to just wait and see what happens.

Mo and Sally have history in WPB so that makes sense there. Too much to invest here most likely.

My guess is a more music show along the lines of WCBS FM's Dan Taylor, but when?

You may be right with the word invest. CC has a number of these multi-people shows in a number of cities mainly on high profile stations. How CC really views WJGH - a major contender or just a little spoiler/low expense cost center will probably reflect in who gets mornings - soon - according to PD Neal Sharpe per All Access.

Dan Taylor is just one fantastic, major talent. If anyone can be a 1 man show - it's Dan. But he's far from being alone with Mr. G weather and newscasters from their AM. Speaking of weather, I never hear any weather updates on Magic. Is that another PPM sin or maybe something else to come down the pike? Radio has too much nickel and dime crap.

Lets start with the PD thing. Wouldn't Pat Garrett have been an obvious choice with his ratings success at WKQL?

Define nickel and dime crap? I really don't know what you mean by that.

Maybe I should have said penny wise, dollar foolish. But that comment was directed at radio in general. My Grandpa was not an educated man but he was smart in business ways. I can still hear him say in his broken English Italian accent – “You gotta spend a money to make a money.”

If there is such a thing, I probably think too big. LOL. I have to remind myself, Jax ain’t the Big Apple or South Florida. But over the years we’ve had talent grace our airwaves who could have easily had a gig in bigger markets – they were that good. There would be nothing finer than to see those with a winning track record return.

For some reason, I’ve been thinking of Don Gerrard. Here was a guy who was no doubt ahead of his time. It’s a shame we lost him too soon. He could say a lot in little time. Even when the powers that be decided talent should have a minimal role, Don still proved he was relevant. He was in PPM mode long before it arrived.

There have been a number of comments regarding the old Cool 96.9. It’s a shame no one really saw second chance opportunity. Over the years I’ve followed Heather White, perhaps in the hope she would return to Jax one day. She’s on a CC Modern Country station now in Austin Tx with a big morning team. It’s good to see she is successful. I hear Dave Scott on lots of commercials and he still sounds good to me. He should have found his place somewhere. They were a great morning team.

As for Pat Garrett, I’ll try to explain what I attempted to do in reply to Captain Parrott.. Over the past year or so, I never spoke of Pat or pretty much anyone else from the “old days” on these boards especially when opportunity presented itself. It didn’t mean I didn’t believe Pat was not worthy of consideration but rather I do consider him a friend. I began to think about how many people read these forums. To constantly play the role of cheerleader and to see opportunity go elsewhere, I began to think that could be embarrassing. And if you consider yourself a friend, just being quiet and working more behind the scenes was way better.

Maybe we will be delighted, maybe we will be surprised, maybe there could even be indifference in the morning show. I have no idea what is coming but I much prefer hearing someone getting hired instead of getting the axe.

Nice, John Thomas use to be at 96.9 The Eagle a few years ago before going to Detroit.

Also Neil Sharpe, the PD, is believe to have place himself into the 8 to Midnight shift as well.

So here is your Magic 107.3 Schedule:

Mornings (I would suppose 5:30am to 11am): John Thomas
Middays (11am to 3pm): Mike Perry
Afternoons (3pm to 8pm): Tony Mann
Nights (8pm to Midnight): The Night Show with Neil R. Sharpe (as he is going by on air I heard on the live stream)

I say they built a strong lineup and went all out unlike the last attempt with Classic Hits/Oldies at the former KOOL 100.7.

Congrats to Clear Channel and the "new" airstaff in their effort for putting together a "Greatest Hits" format - with the 107.3 full market signal, and CC's resources, one would hope (for the listeners) this effort will succeed - this was a long overdue programming hole that needed to be filled in Northeast Florida. And speaking of holes, if you've noticed, it looks like Magic 107-3 has gotten FCC approval for a couple of class D translators near Jacksonville, in Fernandina and Macclenny. I wasn't aware that the 107.3 penetration was thin that close to Jax - it must be those North Florida mountains! ...And the Hits just keep on coming!

Congrats and welcome back to Jax "J.T." John Thomas. I wish you loads of success on what many in the industry call a fun format. In addition to the full daily talent lineup, it's good to see the weekends have some voices too having heard both Neal and Tony this past weekend. It wouldn't surprise me to see JT have some VT weekend shift too.

Nfladxer, I couldn't agree more with your comments. This was a long overdue programming hole that needed to be filled. I noticed billboards have gone up too. I'm hearing the station more and more in business and they are gaining many Facebook fans too. The other day the station was hard to hear one morning. I have to wonder if that had anything to do with the translators you speak of.

Lastly, I have to say congrats to Clear Channel as well for committing their resources to give the station better odds at long term success. For a very long time, I've wanted to support a local radio station. Now I can and I'm loving it!

"JT" John Thomas is live on the air tonight....doing the training shift as he is calling it or where the train wreck happens.....sounds great and is actually happy to be back in Jacksonville. Great move to have him doing mornings from 6am to 11am on "MAGIC". I wonder if they will add a co host with him into the morning slot as time goes on? It would be a smart move as Jacksonville seems to lack a lot of local morning shows minus Lite, WQIK and Gator County.....I guess you can add Magic in no matter what now to that list....what is on the Eagle....yeah its live and local, but there is no personality to it.....Magic has it.

Well, the talent lineup is now all in place. J.T. will prove to be a great choice for morning drive given what I have already heard. Neal Sharpe has put together an awesome airteam IMHO. I’m not sure if CC offers weekend syndicated programming for this type format. Time will tell I guess.

For those interested, check this out. It’s Tony Mann doing a little studio tour of the world behind the mic.
