I learned a great deal about this site in just the first day of signing up, what can and can't be said. I think this market needs to be more open to new ideas and formats, it's not the "good ol' boy" days anymore. The area has diversified with a multitude of culture and needs. I think people should worry more about their health and well being then the ventures of a locally owned prospect trying to make his name in the books. Although, debate and controversy are always hot topics, let's stick to becoming the best we can be, and not put down others and their hustle.
 
Instead of asking, by whom do we owe the honors, and risk another TSO violation due to fueding, I will just say "why thank you, the greeting was warm and welcomed" Best wishes to radio in Northwest Arkansas!
 
You guys have years of experience in radio and in the area, i'm just a humble new entry. I should be asking you for ideas and progressions. I just want everybody to keep an open mind, and be opinionated without trying to harm ones critiques. And especially not mess with ones family or money, becouse then it gets personal. Have mistakes been made, of course. We all fall short of our arrogance and perfection. But until I hear advice or constructive critcism from a body who started a broadcasting company from scratch, it's all offensive and blasphemy to me.

This is all interesting. Some of you guys seem to know each other and have some pre-formed opinions about each other before the conversation begins.

I've been gone from Arkansas long enough that I don't know the players any more, I don't know who is buddy-buddy, I don't know who comes to the table with battle scars from past feuds.

Jonathon: My perception is that the "doers" that currently operate stations they started from scratch and have achieved the kind of success that would meet your high standards don't tend to spend much time hanging out at discussion boards. They are out selling something, or they are out patching up a weak relationship, or they are out enjoying their success by taking an afternoon off for a round of golf.... which might be the scene to make the sale or do the patch-up.

(There are a few "winners" who do follow the boards, so don't intimidate them by demanding of them they have to have to document their credentials if they wish the pleasure of speaking to you.)

Some of us who don't quite meet your high standards have worked for the people that you are willing to listen to. It might be good if you could humble yourself enough to listen to the messengers who can tell you how the "doer" got it done.

Very good point, and 100% correct. I appreciate your candidness. I'm a young buck with alot to learn, given. The ironic side is I was thinking today how if someone mentioned Steve Butler and his thoughts on everything, I would say he has much more valuable and important issues besides hitting keys with the peddlers. I on the other hand, after reading some of the things posted, decided to take part. Probably not the best decision, but wouldn't mind having my voice heard.
 
In my years since broadcasting I have toiled at several different lines of business. Each time I tackled something new I began picking the brains of people already "picking in that patch". I asked even the goofy looking ones for their advice and their philosophy. I also asked everybody to point me to the person they looked up to, the person they thought understood how to make the business work. Through that process I would eventually wind up in the presence of the "proven winners"... the people you already know you want to hear from sooner or later.

I ran across a cute teen-age girl one day who had on the front of her car where a license plate would be in some other state, and plate that said:

"You have to kiss a lot of frogs...
before you find your prince."​

So here is a piece of advice from this old frog:

Learn to sell. As a young man I couldn't. The "sales gene" was absent from my DNA. A great "doer" from Arkansas by the name of Jerrell Shepherd pounded that into my head over and over again: "If you can sell, you then have the money to buy any talent you need, any talent you don't possess. If you CAN'T sell, you won't have the money to hire someone who CAN sell for you."
 
Words of a wise man. I wish more substance of such magnitude was posted on here, instead of petty peeved on-goers about this and that. If you dislike something, unless it's directly hurting you, dislike like it all you want, but giving it power by putting it down is ugly.....and God don't like ugly. Best wishes to everyone on here, thank you Cowboy for giving a better meaning to me about discussions.
 
Sorry, Mr. Butler...but "petty-peeved" things grow from bona fide, real-life situations. You want real? You want gritty? This is where it all comes from....and so does change. People are not inclined to change things if they think it works. Frequently, they're so out of touch that the only way they know it isn't working is when someone complains. Frequently, the complaints are valid and legitimate.

If you are Steve Butler's boy, I wish you well. I readily recognize his achievements. I also interviewed with him once and found it all very confusing. By the way, the "interview" happened after he stood me up for the first meeting. I hope you are able to help him put his arms around his situation.
 
Good point, and well taken. I'm more inclined in learning from such mistakes, as to chasing my tail trying to......you know. And from an outside point of view, of course some of my postings will seem off point,redundant,and contradicting....but when it's my fathers business, and my future being talked about, I go off instict. Maybe I should look at things from the other sides view. Thank you, conversing while gaining knowledge is worthwhile and appreciated.

Got me. Perhaps this is some sort of parallel universe where we speak in clichés and abstruse, esoteric, and cabalistic phrases purporting to instill a perception of depth and intellectual penetration. But, hey, I could be wrong.
 
Close enough,lol. I don't talk to anybody but my fiance and my dogs. It's fun and interesting typing up thoughts and having it be read and scrutinized. When I learn more about radio, i'm sure there will be attributions of more value for me to post.
