New MLB deal with Turner!

This is GREAT NEWS!

I always believe that it should've been done earlier.

Now TBS is the major player of MLB (I don't like FOX or ESPN)

With Sunday Afternoon Baseball, the entire LDS, and the other LCS.

Look out World!

Ted Turner is proabaly dancing somewhere in Montana.

TBS= MLB Regular Season & Playoffs
TNT=NBA Regular Season & Playoffs

Both share conference finals/championship series

Coincidence?

Grr. I still think it shoulda been on broadcast.

I notice this deal doesn't include any additional regular season games or the proposed "highlights show", contrary to the speculations of some on these boards. Turner beat out its competitors just because it paid more, apparently. ESPN's extensive regular season coverage almost looks pointless now.

Any guesses as to the announcers TBS will employ for its LDS coverage?
I have heard that Chip Carey will be the main play-by-play voice, with the rest of the current TBS Braves announcers likely staying with local Braves broadcasts in Atlanta.
Has Marv Albert ever called baseball? He is already on the Turner payroll, so could he be an option? Yes!

Ted doesn't have anything to do with his old networks anymore.
Although I can't stand the guy's politics, I must admit that the Turner networks' overall quality (including CNN, oddly enough) was considerably better before he sold out to Time Warner.

In a recent TV interview (I think it may have been on the Donny Deutch Show on CNBC) Turner said he wishes he never sold the networks and left. He said he wishes he could buy the networks back but know they will never happen. He said someday maybe he'd get back into television. He said of all the decsions TimeWarner made he said he wishes they never took CNNFN dark.

Overall, I think this is a good deal for baseball fans. If anybody has watched Braves games on TBS, you know they have the best crew & camera work in baseball. There are less annoying graphics and sound effects than Fox.

Some will say it should be on broadcast, but I think fans will be happy when they see the games on TBS.

i would've preferred espn, but this is a good pay day for baseball. agreed, tbs will do a fine job with 26 sunday games, all divisional playoffs and its half of lcs. most baseball and sports fans already watch 99% of their market teams' games on cable-tv so the whole argument of seeing playoffs on cable or over-the-air is moot point at this point. mlb is going in the right direction here.

Okay, ESPN has passed on the PGA, NHL and now the MLB post season. Does anybody else think ESPN is beginning to feel that sports broadcasts are not profitable?

i just think disney as a company is too consumed with earnings and profit/loss ratios. they're being conservative by not overpaying for sports content these days.

i think any sports network can suvive without nhl. espn has proven that college b-ball, college football and pool can outperform nhl day in and day out.

They make more money from poker and the X Games, which they get for next to nothing.

The only bad thing about TBS getting this new baseball deal: No HD. :-[

A TBS spokesperson says they`re "always looking at ways to enhance our networks viewing experience" in regards to the HD issue in a Houston Chronicle story. Whether that`s a vote for HD wasn`t clear, but there you go. ;D ETA, the article also said that TBS will have cable exclusivity for their playoff telecasts in the respective teams home markets!

This will force FSN to televise Sunday afternoon Rockies games not televised by TBS. I can't see KTVD 20, Denver's MyNetwork affiliate, owned by Gannett, picking them up.

I see them probably picking up the Saturday Day/Night games though.

Just my opinion :D

Cheers :D

Why would this force FSN to televise Sunday afternoon Rockies games not televised by TBS? The only games that will be exclusive on TBS are the playoff games.

The only network that I could see being affected would be WGN's national Cubs broadcasts on Sunday afternoon.

No. TBS gets Sunday afternoon regular season games IN ADDITION to the playoffs. If the Rockies are on TBS on any given Sunday afternoon, that would mean that FSN couldn't televise the same game and as such I don't think KTVD 20 would be interested in carrying Sunday afternoon games for continuity purposes. FSN however could compensate much easier than KTVD 20 could simply by airing another sporting event.

Of course, one could make the argument that KTVD could just as easily broadcast a movie in lieu of baseball, but movies are expen$ive for local stations (Regardless of network affiliation) and I'm fairly certain KTVD 20 would much prefer Friday Night games as none of the networks televise baseball games on Fridays anyway.
The only network that I could see being affected would be WGN's national Cubs broadcasts on Sunday afternoon.
Here in Denver, unless the Cubs & Rockies are playing at two different times of any given day, they're usually blacked out no matter what day it is.

Just my opinion :)

Cheers :)

The Sunday Afternoon games that TBS will be getting in 2008 are non-exclusive, meaning regional channels such as FSN could televise the same game in the Rockies home market. The TBS broadcast would be blacked out.
