Maynard MOViN To Seattle

Brandon "Maynard" Cohen has been officially appointed PD of Sandusky rhythmic AC KQMV (MOViN 92.5)/Seattle. Maynard, who starts in Seattle on Jan. 8, comes in from KXLY Broadcast Group hot AC KZZU/Spokane. He replaces Lisa Adams, who headed down I-5 in November to take over Portland, Ore.'s MOViN outpost, KVMX (MOViN 107.5).

"He's a young powerhouse -- one of the great young and up-and-coming minds in our business, with an absolute passion for the music," MOViN GM Marc Kaye tells R&R. "We're thrilled he'll be joining us, and that is a definite."

Yeah, let's hope she also has an absolute passion for RADIO. I was in Seattle last November and Movin' was one of the worst station I heard. It had NO SOUL. Just tracks being played back to back, with liners and jingles in between. I sincerely detest non-stop music on the FM waveband. It has nothing to do with radio. Are there actually people who really like listening to this iPod station?

I don't know the person or the station that well...but I suspect almost anywhere PD's hands are tied ... especially when it comes to MOVIN', an Allan Burns creation that is probably getting all its direction from ..... Allan Burns. While I'm just ASSUMING (not necessarily fair) I have to believe they could bring in the best PD in the world and the directives would still be ... "just execute the format as we have told you to do it". Then again, Rick Dees (LA version of Movin') appears to have a LITTLE bit of latitude....but even Burns would have to be a complete moron to try to put Dees into a tight "shut up and play the tunes" box.


You raise kind of a big-picture question that has been debated over and over. There was great radio not that long ago; then consultants listened to the backlash from listeners who said "my radio station is too cluttered" and they went to other extreme of "shut up and play the hits back to back to back...". Now...I suspect most of THOSE people have probably gravitated to the other alternatives (satellite, pods, etc.) yet we treat all these stations with that same mid/late-80's strategy of "maybe if we kiss their %%% with all-music programming they will still listen to us".

I really think the people who are still LEFT in the audience are the ones who probably value the companionship radio offers; or else they're the ones too cheap to buy the i-Pod. I know I don't go out of my way to turn on the jukeboxes any more because I already own most of the music, and it's an absolute guarantee that I'm not missing any entertainment from the talent. Not to say the talent on those stations aren't good at what they do ... it's just I miss the concept of turning to the radio for something MORE than just another spin of KT Tunstall....or C+C Music Factory! Some morning shows still offer that; but in other dayparts it's "slim pickens"!!!

I fully agree. Where's the new "The Real Don Steele"? Or IS he out there, but not allowed to be good?

Burns owns the format, yeah, so I guess you're right. A lot of restrictions for any PD then.

I think it's time for a radio revolution... a new way of thinking, a new way of research (otherwise, everyone will always be doing the same), a new approach, and new execution.

I honestly don't believe radio can survive with formats like Movin'. It kills it.
