New MSNBC graphics package

MSNBC has debuted a new graphics package, apparently this (Saturday 6/27) morning. Their news graphics feature white letterboxes containing information at the top and bottom of the screen. The bottom one is their news ticker, which now works almost identically to ESPN's BottomLine, with headlines separated into categories that visibly change every few minutes. The top letterbox has the new MSNBC (or now, apparently, msnbc) bug, and the network slogan (The Place for Politics). Graphics also feature very smooth transitions with a 'ping' sound when cutting between shots.

The whole look reminds me of a high-tech cellphone operating system. It's very impressive, although I'm not sure of the usefulness of the entire top letterbox at this time. Having "The Place for Politics" always on the screen is a bit pointless in my opinion. They could put weather information there, and perhaps change it to say 'breaking news' when necessary. Overall, a B+.

I would think the top letterbox is for plasma TV viewers. It's placed at the top to complement the CNN logo burned in at the bottom. I've worked at two locations in Newark and Wilmington Delaware and both had plasmas in the lunch room with the CNN permanently etched in the lower left corner. I'm sure MSNBC's addition at the top will make for a well rounded plasma experience. :p ;)

I guess the new look is meant to coincide with the new midday schedule MSNBC is rolling out.

The package is indeed hip. That new ticker does look slick... I bet we still won't see it during their regularly scheduled nightly programs (except for "Hardball," of course.)

I've notice that MSNBC dose have new graphics package myself this morning.

The talk programming probably will not have the bar on top, but they will have all-new graphics to fit. We will find out on Monday.

That bar is a little too much on top...I suspect (and hope) this will be short lived. I know they wan't to drum in their emphasis on politics...but there are other ways.

I also suspect the new graphics are designed for MSNBC HD...which I suspect will quietly launch on Monday as well (if it has not already). There probably will be few takers at the beginning.

OMG! The first thing I thought when I saw the top bar was "Macintosh!" I have a Power Macintosh running 8.6 (yea, it's old because I inherited it from my brother) and the top bar was very recognizable.

Hmmm, I wonder how the MS part of MSNBC will view that. Ooops, I mean msnbc. :p

Thanx for the sample, DtotheJ. I could do without the constant political overtones in the upper corner, especially since no one's running for anything *at the moment* (an occasional weather bug or NYSE/Nasdaq/S&P update would look better IMO). This is most definitely a layout for widescreeners, not as much for those of us still without the $$ to upgrade. I like it though. A definite alternative to the new/current CNN style (which I like also).

I've never been a fan of top-screen letterboxes, simply because most of the time, whomever is employing it doesn't do anything to 'fit' the main shot below the letterbox. Back when Fox used to have a top-screen letterbox scoreboard during sports, it would drive me crazy. They don't do much to make sure that the shot stays framed up properly. You end up with tops of people's heads cut off sometimes.

It's really no different than the last bug, which alternated their logo and their slogan over an American flag backdrop (which I thought was slick, btw). But hey, they're just marketing their slogan, and this appears to be a more effective way.
