new music on the Ride

Last night I heard the Ride play a new track "Water" by Eric Burden. They did announcements before and after the track saying it was new from a new album and tied in older stuff by Eric Burden. Wonder if this something they are going to try more of?

They played a new song from Jon Bon Jovi several days ago too. This station is just sounding worse to me every time I listen to them.

They also seem to be playing the same classic rock tunes over and over....

It's been a common practice lately for some stations like this to begin play new stuff from old artists if it fits the format. Something the Fox is not likely to do. Stations like The Ride and some Triple A's are usually the only places that will even consider doing this.

It's not a new concept. When I did mornings at then-WBGB "Big 106.5" in Jacksonville, FL, there were only two live jocks on the station: me and the PD, who did afternoons. The rest of the programming was Westwood One's "Adult Rock & Roll" format, which played, IIRC, a new track from a core artist going into the :50 break every three hours. One of the songs in that category became one the #2 ranked song in Billboard's 50th Anniversary of the Top-100 chart - "Smooth" by Carlos Santana/Rob Thomas. We played that song for weeks before it hit the charts.

The Ride will play whatever Dave wants the Ride to play! You all seem to forget that Dave is going to do what Dave wants and that is the end of the story. There are lots of options for him to become a huge player in the market but that will never happen. I try to listen to the station when I pass through the city and normally find the music to be OK but way to many marginal songs or "live" versions. The original concept for the station was huge and bsically the same as The Drive in Chicago. Hubbard altered their programming and moved on with the times and Dave did not but that does not make him a bad operator. Dave is one of a kind and should be applauded for sticking to his guns and not giving into pressures of the armchair programers.

For everyone who thinks 95.7 could be "huge," how huge could something/whatever on 95.7 even be?
Is it reasonable to expect him to get a 20 share? A 10 share? A 5? Given today's splintered listener world what would be the most reasonable expectation?
And what would be the best ways to reach those expectations?
People say over and over that he could be a big player in the market, but realistically what are the odds? What other stations have become big players in the market lately? And even then, how long would "huge 95.7" last? It doesn't seem to be often that a station change works out that way, because there's always a million naysayers to nitpick the format, the dayparting, the signal, the FCC paperwork, the branding, the dj's, the sales people, the van, etc............

Apparently, he is pursuing a format that makes enough money to keep the lights on, the website up, the wax spinning, and people talking about The Ride.
That's probably the same thing most of us would do if we had our own paid-for personal FM stick (because it's the same thing we do with our Ipods and our mp3 players and our Walkmans and our radio presets).
And either we would lay low and enjoy The Ride that we're on and do our own thing differently,
or we would be a cookie cutter, seen-it-a-million-times owner and blather on about how important we are.
I like the road Lingafelt's on (resisting the temptation to repeat The Riding reference there :) ).

Yes...Mr. Dave's station will play what Mr. Dave wants to play. My old hat is off to him! He is a very unique kind of broadcaster in this day of cookie cutter formats with 'high-paid' programmers, who don't know a good song unless it is on the charts, from a list provided by a 'high paid' consultant or on his Selector list. Owners and management of today's radio stations just don't get it. They are pi#*ing away their listeners by playing what everybody else tells them to play! I just don't get it! Long gone are the days when programmers talked to and listened to their audiences. There is no more 'serving the public' as it used to be! The Charlotte market, as well as, 99% of the rated markets across this country are giving their listeners sh#* as formats. And that is why so many folks, young and old, are switching to satellite radio, Ipods, C-Ds, talk or just turning the da#* radio off! The days of the F-C-C's mandate to 'serve the public's interest' has been buried in an unmarked grave for years! That is why so many of us OldJockDudes are on the beach and pi#*ed-off at what we hear on the old music box known as radio! Gone are the days of old when a young kid could go to a local station and learn the biz and then work his or her way up to a larger market! Even the small market stations are having problems because they try to image what the larger stations are doing...and that is so da#* sad! Let us face the facts...99% of the owners (group and individuals) are a bunch of idiots, who should be taken out behind the out-house and given a good switchn'! All they care about is the bottom line, which is not as good as it used to be. And the sit in their high-priced suits in their comfortable offices and wonder "what the he#* has happened" to the business! Mr. Dave has not followed that route. There are only a handful of owners out there today, who GET IT! So, Mr. Dave...in closing...I enjoy 'The Ride' everytime I get the chance to hear your station! Keep up the good work and don't listen to those folks, who don't know a thang about what radio is really all about!!!!! That's my 2 cents!

Dave is just resisting Change, which there is nothing wrong in doing this. IMHO, the major problem with FM Radio started with the ''Telecommunications Act of 1996''. That is where the problem started, and the ''Community Radio Stations'' started disappearing shortly thereafter. Think about it: How Many Radio Stations do we have that actually still care about their ''Community''? I applaud Dave for ''resisting'' selling out to the larger guys. Steve.

I don't know Dave, but I do like the music on The Ride. I also applaud an independent station not run by outfits like Clear Channel or Cumulus.

Advice to Dave: I would sell the station while it's still worth something and drink cocktails on the beach everyday. However, if you still love radio that much, keep doing what you're doing and rock on!!

I worked for Dave part-time and full-time for several years, like around 1997 through 2004. And yes, he does march to the beat of a different drummer when it comes to ideas about programming and news.

Yet remember he IS extremely successful. And while I haven't talked to him in several years, I consider him to be a mentor and friend. In a world where radio is largely talentless and "cookie cutter," Dave and his crew provide a breath of fresh air with something different.

I am glad he's there and I like the format pretty good. I am not a fan of the midday voice track girl but I am probably in the minority on that. Independent radio... live on...
