A bit quieter week, this one. But the new music doesn't stop coming!
BROOKE HOGAN f/ PAUL WALL "About Us"
It's fresh from Paul Wall's almost Top 20 hit, "Girl". Thing is, from Cassie to Cherish, from Ciara's upcoming single (more about this one in a minute) to Paula Deanda, there's already a lot of stuff which sounds like this, and Brooke may be lost in the shuffle. Still, a Top 25 placing isn't too out there.
CHINGY f/ TYRESE "Pullin' Me Back"
Yep, he's back, with the ubiquitous of late J.D. at the helm. It's been steady climbing at Rhythmic, at a better pace than would be legit to expect by this stage. Still, it will be too hard to make a real impression, with a lack of strong hook and stuff. Top 50 at best.
CIARA f/ CHAMILLIONAIRE "Get Up"
Jazze Pha again behind the boards, Chamillionaire is ridin' dirty on the mic. It's what you call a grower. At first, it sounds like a poor man's "Lose Control", but further listens reveal a little pop ditty, even if the real star here is the grindin' beat. Top 15 on the strength of Ciara alone. More than that won't be too out there, too.
FRANKIE J f/ MANNIE FRESH & SLIM THUG "That Girl"
Really, what are the rappers doing here?! Apart from it, it sits pretty well with the current Pop 'n' B climate at Pop radio, even though it doesn't really have a strong hook or a very distinctive sound. Top 25. More than that will be beyond what's right, really.
JANET JACKSON f/ NELLY "Call On Me"
Oh, man! Janet and Nelly with J.D. on the boards would have been a no-brainer some two/three years ago, even with the worst song in the world. But at the moment, I just don't see how a non-descript R&B song like this one has space. Maybe a Top 20 just because it's Janet's first single off the upcoming album. And hey, I did manage to talk about Janet without mentioning that thing.
JESSICA SIMPSON "A Public Affair"
All together now: "holidaaayyy, celebraaate"! Sorry, but it was too, erm, irresistible, not to do it! :
Well, the "Boots" song flopped hard - and deservedly so - and maybe it's a sign that maybe - just maybe - people are getting a bit tired of La Simpson. As for this song, it surely won't miss the Top 20. But will it be around for long? I say no.
PHARRELL f/ KANYE WEST "Number One"
You know those people for whom their subpar material would be deemed the best ever if it came from another artist? Well, these two are a case so in point. Not that this is, by any standard, average, but it's not really the killer single it could have been. In some ways, this is "Frontin'" without that really killer guitar hook. Still, I can see this one really hittin during Summer's peak. I risk it: Top 10.
SEAN PAUL f/ KEYSHIA COLE "When You Gonna (Give It Up To Me)"
This song is already making noise at the Top 40, as everybody surely knows. And Sean Paul, as we all too know, has been on fire lately, what with "Temperature" giving him his first #1 at Pop, not counting his duet with Beyonce, of course. Top 10 is a no-brainer for this one, even if adding Keyshia to the mix wasn't that necessary, though it doesn't hurt either. Besides, it makes for great eye-candy for the video. 8)
