New NAC Airchecks

WBMW was an NAC station that broadcast in the Washington, DC metro area on 106.7 in the late 80's. I believe they were the first NAC station east of the Mississippi.

The following airchecks where recorded just prior to a format flip in October of 1988. They are very well scoped and are commerical free. The inital airchecks will identifly the station as WBMW. Prior to the format flip they changed the calls to WJFK. You may also her some ID's as the NEW 106.7 WJFK. For about a month after the flip, they kept the NAC format for evenings and overnights.
Enjoy,

Armando

Holy cow, Armando! I totally forgot about the old 106.7 FM. If you are a D.C. guy, then I'm sure you also recall Jazzy 100.3 FM, which was a great NAC station as well. Unfortunately, I could pick neither signal up clearly from my house at the time in Anne Arundel County. The only station I could pick up clearly and consistently was the old 94.7 FM, which featured the Sunday Jazz Brunch. It was very well programmed (playing long lost NAC artists like Checkfield), but I hated only getting just a little taste each week. Thanks so much for posting this!

Chris,

I have a bunch of original Sunday Jazz Brunch cassettes; circa 1990 that I am in the process of converting to mp3 format. As you are aware, it is quite a lengthly process. We moved to Houston from NOVA in 1991 and I have some tapes of KJZS in Houston which was a rather good NAC station. We moved back to NOVA in 1996 and have witnessed the demise of Washington Radio.

When I get the Brunch tapes uploaded, I will post same.

Regards,

Armando

Can't wait, Armando! Those tapes are an absolute gold mine. IMO, WJZW in DC was always a little vocal heavy for my taste with a heavy R&B influence. Unfortunately, the Capital Jazz Fest has gone in a similar direction in recent years. IMO, Jazzy 100.3 (which was on the air when you were in Houston) was better programmed than WJZW ever was, though it's tenure was far shorter. But the old 94.7 Sunday Jazz Brunch was about the best thing going around here. They were largely instrumental, weren't afraid to go deep on CDs, and showcased lesser-known NAC artists.

Are we in the minority because we crave the NAC sound? I don't think so. My listeners are some of the most educated I have ever come across, and the most passionate. They love the throwback NAC vibe, and have given me hope that one day this genre will see a renaissance on radio. Contrary to the what the pundits say, this is NOT "elevator" music...NOT even close.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Chris

Thank you very much for posting these recordings! I downloaded all of them (so far) and look forward to listening to the airchecks over the weekend.

I really have to compliment the posters who are posting these smooth jazz airchecks. These are not at all like the bland stations that play SJ today. It's kinda old smooth jazz but it's music that should still be on the radio. Thanks for making those songs known to everyone!

Hi everyone. I've been away from this board for a while. I just found this thread. I want to thank everyone who posted these vintage airchecks.

I visited the DC area several times in the 90s. I remember WJZE very well. And I also recall WJFK kept the smooth jazz programming overnights and weekends, well into the mid 90s. They called it 'cool jazz' back then. I always thought it was an interesting contrast. Howard Stern, Don and Mike, et al. by day, and smooth jazz late nights and weekends.

If anyone has any WJZE airchecks, or WJFK airchecks from the mid 90s, I'd love to hear them.

A bit of shameless self promotion. I produce several radio shows that I syndicate to non commercial stations. One of them includes smooth jazz as part of its music mix. I tend to gravitate toward older smooth jazz/nac tracks. So I love hearing these classic airchecks, and then trying to acquire the music. This is not an easy task, as so much of it is now out of print.

Keep the classic airchecks coming, folks. They are greatly appreciated.
