New NC Radio Website Planned

There have been several discussions on the board in recent days about setting up a Website that will attempt to preserve the legacy of Western North Carolina stations, both radio and TV. We would like to include both current and historical informations, including call signs/formats, employees (if known), artwork/logos, jingles, airchecks, photos and whatever else we can scare up to post. We might also include a forum (NOT to replace Radio-Info, but to give a place for discussions of history and legacy that might be out of place on this board), and some other goodies.

I have offered free Web hosting for the site, and we will most likely pursue a URL address to make it easy to get to.

What I need now is some help. I am very busy with my "regular" job and a couple of my "part-time" endeavors, so this will be fourth at best on my priority sheet right now.

Anyone out there besides me code? I use either Dreamweaver or GoLive for Website development. I welcome help with a logo and any assistance that could be given with the design of the site.

What do you think...should we do it strictly for Western North Carolina (and where should we draw the boundary, I-77?) or should we just set up a NC radio site and do a Western, Central and Eastern section? I'd like everyone's thoughts.

Either post a comment on the board or contact me offline and we'll get the ball rolling.

In fact, anyone who would like to be put on a listserv to get mail about the site should contact me offline and I'll get you added to this e-mail service (no addresses shared with anyone, nor will they be sold for profit).

I can be reached at [email protected]

Don't want to sound selfish, but I'd prefer the site stay focused on WNC, and since there's some debate on how that's defined, say west of I-77?

There's history everywhere... why not divide it into sections, sort of like this one, and have history/information about each?<P ID="signature">______________

Whwn I did NCRTV a few years ago, I tried to include statios within 'earshot' of Charlotte, the Triad and the Triangle. Perhaps you might consider covering stations within 'earshot' of Hickory, Asheville and all points west.

When Dan gave me his password on NCRTV, I tried to do an across the state board and found it to be impossible, with a full time PD job in radio. Concentrate on what you know best, and let linking do the job.

Personally, I like the idea of I-77 West. Or, within Two hours drive of Asheville, but still in NC.

I stink at writing code, but I do a passable job at updating a site once it's done. Writing copy is more my speed.

Wow, this will be fun!

We definitely have enough interest to pull this off...and I think that the Web is the perfect place for it to exist.

I'm very busy at work this week (I was out of the office at conferences last week) so I'm getting caught up on my work, but I plan on "getting the ball rolling this weekend for the site. I will provide more details after I get things set up online.

What you folks can do is start gathering scans of photos and memorabilia, stories, employee lists, or whatever you can find out about radio stations WEST of I-77 and send the information to:

wncradioATpegasuscreations.com (replace the AT with the @ sign)

I still welcome help on graphic designs anyone might suggest for the site (colors, logo, etc.). Anyone who will write content is greatly appreciated (thanks broker and anyone else who can help).

My plans are to have current links for stations, featuring band, dial position, power, antenna system and ownership info, then links to historical information about each station.

I'll also have a bulletin board and (maybe) we'll do some live chats for folks to get together and discuss things in real time. We'll see about getting those started after we get the site up and functioning.

And I guess I should come clean. I spent 13 years working at WTOE in Spruce Pine, first as a part-timer in high school and college, then as production, news and program director, along with doing high school sports and pulling a daily airshift full-time for 8 years. I left the business in 1993, but radio is still in my blood.

I also did stints at WSKY and KISS FM (when it was a rocker) in the mid-1980s part-time before heading back up the mountain. When I was in college, I held shifts at (then) WHNI in Mebane, NC (1060 AM) and at G-105 at its CHR hey-day.

I long for the old days of radio when things mattered and stations actually COMPETED for audience, and I hope we can preserve some of that on our new Website for others to see how "things used to be."

I know Ken Fybush did an article on Asheville stations on his Website a few years ago. Does anyone know him well enough to ask permission to use his photos on our site (with acknowledgment and linking to his site, of course)? He's at http://www.fybush.com .

Anyone who wants to stay informed about the site can send me e-mail to the address above. I'm going to create a listserv to send information about its development and maintenance as we get it going.
