New News Director At WLNE

Global has hired Irene Mahoney-Paige away from her perch at WTIC/Fox 61 to become WLNE's new news director. She'll be getting to work right away, as she starts tomorrow. Previously, she had been an executive producer at Hartford's Fox station for three years.

In the same article, Phil Lombardo comments that WLNE will "have 100% HD capability" by mid-September.

WLNE does have a very good news program; what it needs is more viewers. I would not be so sure about no change in ratings after they go to HD; a close third place rating would be much better than they have had in a long time. With the right combination of advertizing their news on local media, and viewers trying out WLNE's news, ratings could improve.

I like wlne, I think they should try the Local news thing. Once I met Ed Perry of Watd- fm in a media class. And this is what he said. "Dont try to do what the other guys are doing, do something no one else is. That way you can attract more people to you station." Maybe if wlne has more Local news and maybe more commentery they can pick things up. A side note I think they need to lose buddy, ppl in RI seemed angery with wlne when he came back one viewer said 'I wont watch abc6news until he is gone."

Kinda like how WMAQ in Chicago brought in Jerry Springer to do commentaries on their newscasts (the NBC O&O aired his talk show at the time; don't think they still do at this time) forcing one of their top anchors to threaten to leave.

With the exception of HD, hasn't WLNE tried to re-invent itself over and over again for the past 3 decades? Action News, Channel 6 News (John Sweeney), WLNE News (Dave Layman, Ann Conway, and the hiring of John Ghiorse), WLNE 6 News, Pamela Watts and Larry Estepa, ABC 6 News, doing the news without an endless string of "live" reports from some place where something happened 12 hours ago, a new, revitalized newsteam with an hour-long newscast at 4pm, etc. I'm sure I forgot something in there, what exactly are they supposed to do???

Yep - this guy:

How could I forget? Thirty years ago, sitting in Brown stadium on a crisp New England day, watching Brown students "steal" an opposing team's cheerleader, and the whole stadium chanting "Pass her up to Buddy!!!". Or, perhaps, it was having Buddy come to lecture my Urban Studies class, chain-smoking as he lectured. Ah, the good ole days! ;D

Quite right! Since January 1, 1963, WTEV/WLNE has "re-invented" itself more times than anyone cares to remember.

Now is the time for Channel 6 to stop banging its collective head against the wall trying to be something other than number 3.

I'm not saying they shouldn't try to put a good product on the table......only that Clear Channel Television should be content to make what profit they can......and be content with being number 3.

Someone has to finish third.....It might as well be Channel 6.

If they're not careful, they could end up being number 4, or, hell, even number 5! At least they won't have to worry about finishing behind RIPBS, anyway... ::)
