New Northeast Ohio Radio Website

Wow...I don't buy those web numbers at all.

WCER has more webhits? Please.

John- Nice try.

Interesting post. But yes - according to alexa.com, which is the only independent ranking I know of, WCER.US is beating everybody and we've been advertising that on our website for the last 3 months or so. I do have to admit that the accuracy of alexa on low-volume websites seems to be a bit shaky - but we have been promoting the website heavily and are getting roughly 300 pageviews per day.

How long have the WCER call letters been in Canton? They were the calls for AM 1300 in Huntington, Indiana (now WBZQ) from mid-late 1983 until the station went dark sometime in 1986. Before that, the calls were WHLT, which according to most locals, stood for "Why Huntington Likes Television".

The WCER calls have been on 900 in Canton since 1992. Before Indiana, they were on 1390 in Charlotte, Michigan (Lansing) (now WLCM) from 1956-1980ish. And that was the first station I worked at! (as WLCM). WCER originally stood for "Charlotte, Eaton Rapids" (both towns that 1390 served.)

Just went to this "New" site. It's gone. It appears that NEOR has folded his tent after just a few short weeks.
Looks like OMW will remain the undisputed King of Blogs for Media in NE Ohio.

Hey John....Canton, not to be outdone by the WCER calls having been acronym-ized in the past, has the call letters standing for Where Christ Ever Reigns.

The only reason I knew that is because it was on the sign near the WRQK transmitter site that I used to handle. Nifty addition to the sign.....900 AMen. Gotta give em credit there I guess.

Gary Z....now in Nashville

Nice to see you, Gary! Hope Nashville is treating you well.

As for the other site, a few people have mentioned it to me - remember, I haven't gone there more than a couple of times, since I wanted OMW to exist in a "clean room" atmosphere.

But, I'm not dancing over its apparent demise.

There was PLENTY of room for a different flavor of website than OMW. NEORR, from what I'd seen and heard of it, was not quite as "newsy" as we tend to get, and at least for a while, was supposed to be more open with the comments.

Any regular OMW reader knows how that goes, and whoever runs NEORR found out rather quickly, from what I've been told.

I'd assume whoever created it also found out what I've known first hand over the years...keeping the thing vital and updated, if you have anything resembling a life, is very, very difficult.

And I know that better than anyone, as I've been plugging at it with OMW (give or take a hiatus or three) continuously for over two years. It's difficult.

BTW, I'm thinking of bringing back unsigned comments, but moderated before posting. I miss the interplay and people "bouncing off of" our items, but I don't want to return to unmoderated comments. If I thought the readership would be OK with the fact that I am not tied to OMW 24/7 and comments may be delayed until I can approve them, I'd do it.

oa-keep the moderated comments rather than unsigned. where neorr ran amuck was allowing unsigned, anon and unmoderated comments that quickly ran down many lanes that did not need to be travelled. case in point, when madison was reassigned by next media, the foul language and gutter mindset against her was abominable. the next day, he instituted moderation, but tltl. there was NO EXCUSE for the slander against madison that he permitted.
one of the things that sets your blog apart is the moderated comments that require posters to be accurate and above board in their postings. i for one appreciate that you DO REQUIRE posters to sign in to post. thanks keep up the good work--david5258

Gary,

I am currently the OM at WCER, that's why I made the comment about working at 1390. And yes...that's the current meaning of the call letters, although we don't use that slogan on the air anymore. Personally, I never really liked the AMen thing....although I guess I have to admit it was creative!

Thank you, David. I appreciate your kind words and input.

I didn't see what happened on the other blog, but it's similar to some of the stuff we went through in similar issues, before the comments required a Google account login. Hey, I'm all for free speech and all - I just don't want some of the nastier stuff attached to something I spend a lot of time working on. A lot of people in this business STILL don't "get" that the comments were not related to the content I put up, and I still get folks to this DAY who think less of OMW for those nasty anonymous comments from days gone by. (I mean LITERALLY to this day!)

I had a feeling it'd happen to NEORR, and they quickly abandoned the "open comments, say what you want" policy they started with - from what you and others have told me. There IS ownership of the content by the blog editor, no matter what, and you can't leave yourself exposed to potentially legal action.

I was kicking around restarting the non-logged-in comments, though, because I do miss some of the activity (the good stuff), and it kept people checking even when I wasn't able to babysit the thing with new comments. I also get a tip or three from the comments.

But they will NEVER, EVER be returned unmoderated. I was only contemplating having each comment be manually approved by me - it's an option in Blogger. I'd have to approve and release the comments before they went up.

The reason that's prevented me from doing this - if the comments were done that way, it'd be more of a time sync for me, and there's no guarantee they'd show up in a reasonable time after being posted.

The more I think of that, the more I like the status quo. :) And frankly, the hits are higher than ever - more than 1300 unique visitors a day now. I think the spike is mostly due to places like NewsBlues and AllAccess pointing to us lately.

Thanks again, David, John, and the other readers lurking here.

The people making the nasty, anonomyous comments will just have to buy themselves a sharpie, and leave them in the bathroom stall, just like in the olden days, before the internet.

But like some people at Clear Channel found out on my blog, if you have a site meter, then an anonomyous comment isn't really anonomyous.

I went to your blog and scrolled all the way down to " New Friend Alert Frasypoo". I can not find anything that explains what you mean by "site meter", etc.

Please share this info and I will teach you the correct spelling of ANONYMOUS.

?

"Sitemeter" is a internet application that is able to tell someone that has a regular blog or website some information about who is visiting the site. Such as IP address (not in full), ISP, resolution of computer monitor, browser, location of the computer, etc. It does not give information for every user and is not able to tell the name of the user..It also tells where the user is clicking from and where they click to and how long they are on your site/blog..With SiteMeter, one is able to count in depth website traffic day by day..Really an amazing application.

First I am embarassed that I didn't use a spell check on this one.

But a couple of months back I had posted something about Trivisonno on my blog after he had been rude to me on the air. That day I had about 20 responses to the post. I check my site meter on those who posted as anonymous. I matched the time from the comments to the time of the visit on the sitemeter.(click on the counter at the bottom of my blog to get to sitemeter) Three of those were from Clear Channel computers, and I proved that to some naysayers over at the Listening Party.

Most people who go online at work who work for large corporations aren't doing anything big brother doesn't know.

Sorry you had to go through all that work to get to my blog. Next time just click on my name and you'll get to my profile where WIXY's Gone Bananas is a hyperlink.

I tried Northeast Ohio Radio's link in post #1 above and got a dead link. Anyone else experiencing those issues?

As for the call letter history at 900 in Canton.... the station was originally WCNO. In the late 60's or maybe early 70's it became WNYN and had a nice run through most of the 70's and into the 80's as a country station. I'm a little hazy on this, but I think it became WTOF for a brief period of time, before becoming WCER in the early 90's.

It's been dead for awhile, a few weeks at least.

Youre pretty much right on the history. except that AM 900 originally signed on in 1947 with the call letters WAND-I think a Stark County History I read a while back states that the Letters stood for "The WANDerful spot on your dial". WAND kept those calls through at least the late 1950's. It was WTOF in the early 80's I believe, then WBXT for less than a year then WCER since I believe 1988..

As far as NEO Radio Report it was up a short time then vanished..and has been gone for several weeks..
