New, not "NEW", Imaging for River

I think it started yesterday, but I really noticed it today. New imaging for the River that omits "NEW", so we can all stop the jokes.

The imaging also has more of a classic AOR sound than what they had been using...coupled with a more AORish playlist, are they perhaps trying to make a run at Rock100.5's listeners?

Does Cox smell blood in the water over at Cumulus?

I like this station a whole lot more now, still a lot of repetition of the same old songs though.
I guess asking for a deep-cut classic rock station in this day and age is asking too much, vs. the Cox burn-and-turn model.

Interesting that sister B98.5 seems to be throwing 80s brushback pitches at WYAY, and now River is aiming right at the current classic-rock iteration of Rock100.5.

Would River's move actually help WYAY by removing some of the non-AOR classic hits overlap? To put it another way, is River's targeting of Rock100.5 taking away some of WYAY's competition from River on the softer end? Will Rock100.5 be the odd man out?

The River shifted one-third of its playlist in late February, but the size of the playlist remains about the same: 240 songs. Yes, the playlist is just 240 songs. The replacements don't seem fundamentally different from the songs they dropped stylistically. The station swapped many songs from the same artist. Dropped, say, "Summer of 69" for "Run to You" or "I'm on Fire" for "Dancing in the Dark" or "Don't Stand So Close to Me" with "Da Do Do Do De Da Da Da" or "My Best Friend's Girl" for "Shake it Up."

Songs dropped (about 80 total, including several Eagles songs): "Your Song," "Margaritaville," "Swingtown," "Maggie May," "Summer of '69," "Desperado," "Take Me Home Tonight," "I Love Rock n Roll," "Dancing in the Dark," "Living on a Prayer," "Hurts So Good," "Tempted," "Jump," "Caught Up In You," "Sledgehammer," "Small Town," "867-5309" "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "Some Kind of Wonderful," "What I Like About You," "Pride," "Brass in Pocket" "Dont' Stand So Close To Me," "One Thing Leads to Another," "Love is Alive," "Still the One," "You May Be Right," "Start Me Up," "Reeling in the Years" "25 to 6 to 4," "Point of No Return," "Living Thing," "You Might Think," "Baby Hold On" "Do It Again" "Frankenstein," "Wild World," "Can't Get Enough" "Little Lies," "Movin' Out," "My Best Friend's Girl," "Addicted to Love," "Long Train Runnin' " and 37 other songs.

New songs: "Hollywood Nights," "Turn the Page," "Show Me the Way," "Heart of Glass," "Over the Hills and Far Away," "Ain't No Sunshine," "Rock 'n Me," "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da," "Run To You," "I'm on Fire," "Gimme 3 Steps," "School's Out," "Any Way You Want It," "Imagine," "I Shot the Sheriff," "Centerfold," "Rock On," That's All," "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic," "Everybody Wants You," Burning For You," "Separate Ways," "Southern Cross," "Shake It Up," "Too Much Time On My Hands," "Message in a Bottle," "Breakfast in America," "Waiting for a Girl Like You," ""Bad to the Bone," "Wheel in the Sky," "I Won't Back Down," "Smoke in the Water," "After Midnight," "Still the Same,' "The Chain," "Band on the Run,' "Only the Good Die Young," "Juke Box Hero," "Dancing in the Street,' "Urgent," "Black Betty," "Gold Dust Woman," "Turn to Stone," "The Best of Times" and about 35 others.

According to Mediabase, ten of these 80 "new" songs have never been played before on the River: "Smoke in the Water," "Dancing in the Streets" (Van Halen version), 'After Midnight," "The Best of Times," "Love is a Battlefield," "Purple Haze," "Amanda," "Baby, What a Big Surprise," "Run Through the Jungle," "Turn Me Loose."

So that is why I saw pigs flying over the West Cobb/East Paulding area for the past few days. I guess the River no longer being called "New" is earth shattering major breaking news.

I checked out the stream for WBPT/Birmingham "106.9 The Eagle", which is a few months older, and shared the same VO guy and enthusiasm for being "New" as the River. They still have the same VO guy, and they are still "New". I guess the changes may come out their way after being implemented here.

That's because no such song titled "Smoke In The Water" exists. ::)

i would think it would be better to add 80 new songs without taking the other songs off and change the song list from 240 to 320 .not that many songs and more variaty.it also would not alienate the listioners who liked the songs taken off.

Twin sister station 106.9 The Eagle in Birmingham has also followed suit by dropping "the new" from its branding, some five and a half years after its debut.
