NEW OLDIES STATION

Horne just put an oldies station on the air here in Knoxville. It's on 670 AM. The call letters are WMTY and they play all the good stuff from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. So if there's anyone out there missing the oldies - you can get it here. The bad thing is that this station is just on the air from sunrise to sunset. For an AM station, the signal is strong though and comes in clearer than Oldies 95/106 did. Or it does where I live anyway. This station has the best variety of oldies I've ever heard. It beats what 95/106 had hands down.

It's kinda cool that Oldies are on AM, where they started out in the first place. I doubt that this station will ever be a major player in the Knoxville market. It probably won't register enough numbers to even get a rating, but still, it's on and gives us a little more variety and a break from the automated disco machines on 95/106 and 98.7.

Re: NEW OLDIES STATION (Not Necessarily New)

I'm not sure if any of you guys remember this or not but WMTY isn't a new concept for Horne at all. Before they became a simulcast pod for the high and mighty (NETWORK) a couple of years ago They were the MIGHTY 670 and played a good mix of music as well (No Jocks but just a jukebox) I would love to see them do well this go round since they appear to be the only game in town for now (at least) only drawback on coarse is that they are daytime only and that unfortunately won't change.

What I've heard the station is still automated - no jocks at all. It would add a little flavor to the format to have a couple of good jocks on there introducing the music. If it were me doing an AM oldies station, I'd do my best to make the thing sound like a station would have during that time period. I hope the station does well too. The reception surprises me. I can get it loud and clear all the way from Knoxville into downtown Clinton, Halls, and even in Oak Ridge. Oldies 95/106 faded out whenever I got past the Knox County line. It looks like it would be just as cheap for Horne to go ahead and have the station on 24 hours since they have no jocks at all. Keeping the station on 24 hours would give them a chance to maybe, just maybe, score a point or two. Since this is the only station doing oldies right now, it will be interesting to see how this Mighty little station does.

Re: NEW OLDIES STATION (Not Necessarily New)

They don't have any say in the matter of 24 hrs or not. They are on a clear channel freq. They must be at least 700mi away to even get reduced power at night. So they are stuck with the sunrise to sunset hours. I hear they are still on the market. Anyone heard any different?

Re: NEW OLDIES STATION (Not Necessarily New)

The last thing that I read was that everything was on the block EXCEPT for WMTY 670(Because it was located in the same building as their Faragut press) and WFIV (The old west 105)
