NEW Oldies Stations

In DC and Atlanta, new TRUE OLDIES affiliated stations are starting. The PPM and large companies failing are leading to a new flux of oldie stations starting again in the major markets. Orlando a couple of months ago debuted a classic hits format, but like New Orleans, DC and Atlanta are launched with Scott Shannon! Oldies are indeed back!!

While True Oldies are now on in DC, the format IS NOT on in Atlanta and currently it's just speculation that Country WYAY 106.7 will be flipping to True Oldies.

And now its on in Providence, RI. The oldies situation is really turning around.

If you want to check out the True Oldies format, I suggest you try the Orlando feed, which is 128k mp3. It's not bad, but not that great either. It would be better if it had some more personality. Having one jock (obviously voicetracked) for the entire broadcast day is a bit strange. Musically, it sounds similar to ABC's Pure Gold format from 10 to 15 years ago.

That said, it is nice to see oldies making a comeback in some form on terrestrial radio.

BTW, the Orlando station is WEUS. You should be able to find it by searching in the Shoutcast Radio browser in Winamp. The True Oldies Channel listen live page also has a link. That page is:

WDJO, Cincinnati has been proving the point that Oldies is a viable and fun format. Check it out on line at oldies1160.com in 128k stereo. They play great sounding Oldies (without stupid repetition), and not the stiffs and trainwrecks that Shannon's True Oldies syndicated format or XM/Sirius play tend to play. WDJO sounds like the jocks are enjoying the music and being there with the listener. The Van Dyke imaging is top notch, and the jingles sound appropriate for the era of music (without being kitschy or campy).

I haven't heard another, better sounding Oldies outlet in the country. Shannon has nothing on Ted McAllister and these guys in Cincinnati!! It's upbeat, fresh and relevant!!!

Yes, 'DJO is one of the best. If more stations did it this way, the format would probably be in better shape

Any idea why I heard some guy trying to do a talk show on the WDJO stream one night? Absolutely no one was calling the guy, and I felt like telling him to shut up and play some music.

Later....

The folks at WDJO are Jerks! I've listened online and they won't even acknowledge or answer email's. Give me Shannon's True Oldies anytime! At least he answers emails and takes requests.

Well, I've never tried e-mailing anyonw at WDJO, but I did e-mail Dan Allen and Dusty Rhodes when they were at 1530 WSAI and got prompt responses.

check out my station at realoldies1600.com...we keep trending up with our 10kw day /129w night signal up to a 1.5 with a 100kw competitor we are in a heavily radioed Albuquerque

I can't say why WDJO didn't answer your email, but for the most part the jocks you hear are voicetracked. There is very little money for staffing. They did bring Bill Boshears on board (had a weekend talk show for several years on WLW called the "Sci Zone", with a lot of copnsipracy theories), maybe DJO has him doing a talk show there. Also, former WLW Sports talk host Andy Fuhrman does a 5 minute commentary every morning.

I have had no problems with WDJO. Dusty Rhodes has always responded to my emails ever since the format's inception two years ago.

There is hardly a time when the jock is actually in the building when his show airs. These are voicetracked and prepared one, two, or several days in advance. One on air personality that I know of comes in two days a week and prepares his shows for the entire week. Dusty seems to be better at emails than some of the others, for whatever reason. Still a great station with a nice large library. These guys are not jerks. They are mostly part time jocks who love the format and aren't making a killing working there, that's for sure. There is nothing like them in the Cincinnati market, and our local market has much to be desired. Probably any question the you would pose to DJO could be answered by many of the folks who post here. This board is read by lots of folks with much expertise.

Not true at all. WDJO staff is OK. Have emailed them several times and except for general comments they have always replied. Talked to Roger Kay and Dan on the phone off air before.
DJO is doing a great job with what they have to work with. TRue oldies is dull after a while, Who wants to hear Shannon's voice 24/7. He also does the voice overs for Hannity

:eek:Technology Is A Wonderful Thing
Who would have ever thought that a voicetrack made days before could give a current WX AND Current Temp which varies during his show.
I Am Truly Amazed at today's voice tracking capability. Why the jock must be clairvoyant to be able to accomplish that.

RealOldies format is great. Very polished. I think Clear Channel owns it. I actually like the sound better than hearing Scott Shannon's liners 24/7 on True Oldies... COme to think of it...He does some voice tracks for the Sean Hannity show..... We hear him a lot. < lol>.. But I hope that more stations will pick up the Real Oldies format.
