NEW OM/PD AT CC PROVIDENCE

From All Access he's Chris Tyler from CC Boston. He'll program HJY, B101, and Coast. Chris also used to work at PRO-FM and is a RI native. I wouldn't expect any changes in philosophy there in terms of more local talent on B101 or Coast and being responsible for all three stations is a lot on anyone's plate but HJY isn't known for changes and there isn't much local programming on B101 or Coast anyway but maybe we'll see little things changing.

The only reason I'd venture a guess that changes are coming is that the super early Christmas-flip tends to signal a post-holiday format change. Added into that the fact that Christmas was pulled from B this year and moved to Coast, super early, and I wouldn't be shocked to see something big happen there. (Big meaning surprising, big not necessarily meaning successful.)

This looks to me like just a CC personnel shuffle. What could WSNE possibly flip to other than an FM WHJJ simulcast? Another variation of AC? Won't change things. CHR? Forget about it. No other viable formats that wouldn't compete with CC's own stations in the market.

What about GenX for 93.3? That wouldn't surprise me if they came back from Christmas music with a flip to that.

Here's why I wouldn't be shocked to see an attempt at CHR on 93.3:

Chris Tyler has CHR experience, both in this market and in Boston. 93.3 already runs Matty and Ryan Seacrest. There hasn't been a PRO-FM challenger in forever.

I'm not saying it's a good idea, and I'm not saying it won't be an HJJ simulcast, but CHR would definitely be in the running.

I doubt that the reason Chris was placed there is his CHR experience. He's probably very competent, but we're living in a day where a PD is a PD regardless of format. It's not like the old days where you needed an expertise in a particular format and concentrated on that format because of your success at it. Chris will be programming a hot AC, classic hits, and mainstream rock station although I doubt major shots will be called by him. That's the generic nature of a PD as a manager and not a creative force even though he may be qualified on the creative end of it. As far as Gen-X, the CC Gen-X stations have variations of the same URL for their station websites. In Providence it would be genexprovidence.com or genxprovidence.com and no one has claimed those sites. If they were going Gen-X they'd have had the foresight to have claimed it already.

Is there anywhere outside of the Midwest where CC has placed GenX stations? I know, for example, that Tulsa, Kansas City, and Louisville all have them. In fact, Kansas City's GenX station also runs Ryan Seacrest.

CC just launched GenX in Seattle... and the Kansas City station is actually owned by Entercom.
