New or Desperate?

They're trying to compete with WPOZ. It's a stupid marketing ploy that almost everyone uses. There should be a cutoff point after a format change to stop saying you're new. I don't like it either, but I guess it works. Another marketing ploy I don't care for is when a station first starts up and immediately says they're #1. Show me some proof that you're #1 somewhere right after you first sign on please.

The LA station that was called "New 101.9" dropped the name after about 12 years or so in 2012. After research, they found that people still liked that name, 11 years later as they thought it meant "fresh new music all the time". So last month, they became "New 101.9" again.

If you've never heard em at 98.1, it's new to you. Joy-FM on the 98.1 signal has got a mountain to climb while wearing flip flops to ever have a shot at having more listeners than the Z. Just based on technical advantages the the listener base the Z has built over the last something like 20+ years, all the Joy-FM can hope for is a fair share of the audience they desire in the area. Honestly though, they just want coverage everywhere and 98.1 allows them to cover more of that area than they did before. But then again... they are obviously spending money on billboards so what do I know. ha ha

At the end of the day both stations are trying to build audience in case KLove finds a way to enter the market. In southern part of the Atlanta market The Joy FM competes against K Love and a Salem Fish. Even though Joy has poor total market coverage they are strong where the other two are weak. Now this was before and tornado toppled the Joy FM tower its signal came from 50 miles southwest of downtown and both K Love a class C and the Fish a class C1 come from the same tower 33 miles east of the city. While Z Blankets the Orlando market wonderfully and the 98.1 c2 signal is 29 miles north east of downtown Orlando. But 98.1 serves the Daytona Beach market better. Granted its a lot smaller than Orlando.
