New Orleans Makes Top 5 On Ten Best Market List

dear god you mean it gets worse than new orleans? if new orleans is #5 than I need to buy the entire USA sattelite radios ;D

Ask the locals on here and they will cut WWL into two.. but it does talk with mostly locals and even thought people might not get the local talk hosts that are on here sometimes.. I think some like Spud are just homegrown enough to make people comfortable..... New Orleans and the area are in a different way of thinking and living than the rest of Louisiana and the south. People rather listen to a Yat talk for two hours about the potholes not getting fixed than some of the syndicated national talkers...

The WWL on Demand however is a joke IMO espcially with streaming the feeds as podcasts would do the samething cheaper... WWWL should jump the gun on Crocodile Broadcasting and go Spanish Talk ala WWL in spanish and see what happens.

WWOZ has a very strong following and I think their only issue most have with the station is funding or lack of it. It's for the locals who love the mix and gives visitors a chance to taste NOLA.

Better executed WLMG?????? 5 years ago it was a extremely well oiled machine IMO .. Now we have them trying to make it some sort of A/c with some Hot a/c playlist and a try to play some of the songs on WDVW of all things (Disco)..Get back tight and WLMG would be a top notch station again.

WNOE wins by default... the programming is average for medium sized market (To me it sounds cookie cutter to most of the country stations in Louisiana) but people who have fled for Katrina , got a taste and now listen to Baton Rouge radio station WYNK now also (mainly it's a station that has home grown one nationally syndicated show, and VTing another currently (from a 82 market)... KKND has a PD who thinks no one else in town realizes he's got the songs cranked up in speed...come on, this is a music town and we have people who know beats...This isn't Ohio or PA... You have 4 country stations hearable anywhere basically in the market at any given time.. everyone can tell you Toby never sounded so high....

I agree with you on WQUE and WYLD as the only R&B stations I've heard have been in the south..and they do it right... biggest issue was kicking of CJ morgan (a local for syndicated)

WTIX-FM isn't replicating the sound of WTIX-Am .... Too many sound checks will prove that... maybe the jingles and such..music is owner's private music playlist and he admits it.

KLRZ Just boosted their power recently to compete better in NOLA. There is a minor group of locals in New Orleans listening, but station is aimed for area SW of the city and is definitely local radio playing a musical format that like WWOZ is a pure local flavor radio station.

WDVW, was a attempt by the PD at creating a station that sounded something like his stations he remembers back in NYC..... Some say it's aimed at women, Some argue it's a Pride radio in disguise.... all I do know is playlist has gotten a lot more recent lately but isn't a Chr/urban just yet.... and is the one that came out before the "Movin" format that swept a few markets a few years ago. (Most hope they would flip this to something like a AAA..either that or Hot AC (with it's sister WMTI taking on the AAA)

The spanish FM never happened so far as pre-K market, there wasn't a call for a spanish FM due to low hispanic numbers (most actually were Central American).... However with Mexican nationals working in industry and a lot of the people doing construction work, some people expect one of the major companies to consider flipping a underperforming FM to it (such as WRNO).. I've said if Crocodile Broadcasting could get the funds, I'd expect KNOU to be bought and flipped.

What you are forgetting is the market doesn't have the number of stations due to the number of stations in our small area... figure 30 Fms that can be heard in the New Orleans area in town from a about a 50-70 mile radius of stations ( that and New Orleans has really no stations to it's south).

So what do you think of my opinions Mr. Sean?

RFLA, nice comments.

Sean, in scanning your reports I see that most every market has a "how could you have missed..." comment. In that light, I think you missed the New Orleans story of five unique news/talk stations from seven signals.

I'll give you points for mentioning WWL/WWL/WWWWWWL -- as well as WBOK (nice to see CJ back) -- but WRNO, WIST and WGSO are also offering their own mix of local/national shows. If you add NPR and the NBC-TV affiliate's audio on 87.7, dat's a lotta yat's yakkin'.
