New Orleans: POWER 102.9 "Nonstop Hip-Hop"

Re: New Orleans: POWER 102.9 "Nonstop Hip-Hop

Most kids today have only known 93.3. It will take something special to get them away from it. They better know what they are doing ;)

True. Hopefully, they'll have a street team all over town with t-shirts, bumper stickers, etc. Im sure they'll play 1,000 or whatever number of joints in a row commercial free. I believe they will actually be billed as CHR/Rhythmic, but Urban in reality.

Has it started yet? I am getting nothing on 102.9.

Shawty.. to make it competitive you would have to do that kind of promotion as the Q has been rolling the format for 20 years now since flipping from CHR if I remember there last days...

But Citadel's track record in this market is, that they won't spend almost no money with the expectation that word of mouth will do it. I mean look at the format flips of 106.7 to country and now to old school.
The last time they really put effort was to launch Diva 4 years ago.

You can forget about a street team IMO, you may be lucky to see a lot of billboards up.... Political campaign style posters put up around NOLA and Jefferson parish would possibly get more notice than the billboards I've seen however with 106.7 as country.

Actually gut says look for programming help or even a relay of WEMX (Max 94.1) Baton Rouge as they are number 2 under Citadel's Urban A/C in Baton Rouge.. and even though it would be sort of by default they are 1 and 2 (as the choices for urban are low in 225) I think it would bring the killer shots needed to have any success as a Urban.... if not, within 2 years the roulette wheel of formats will spin again

Well, here's the official release - ooooh, 10,000 songs in a row!

Citadel Broadcasting Corporation (NYSE: CDL) proudly announces, The World Premier of POWER 102.9 FM (KKND-FM) with 10,000 songs in a row. POWER 102.9 Non Stop Hip-Hop is the newest radio station here in New Orleans, set to reach teens and young adults in the city. Operations Manger, LeBron Joseph (LBJ) says, “It’s an exciting time for us at Citadel and the city to showcase today’s top artists and embrace our wealth of local talent.” The launch of Power 102.9 is Thursday July 3, 2008 at 10:29a.m.CST.b “Offering more choices for our listeners as well as more options for advertising clients is always a plus to our community.”
-David Kubicki, Market Manager

“We are thrilled to welcome Non Stop Hip-Hop to the New Orleans area”, said Mayor C. Ray Nagin. LBJ assumes the role of Program Director on both Power 102.9 and Old School 106.7. We invite you to come and experience the real POWER of Hip-Hop by turning your dial to 102.9 FM on July 3, 2008. Non Stop Hip-Hop streams at www.POWER1029.com

10,000 rap songs in a row???? Count the on-air obscenities in the thousands.

Good God almighty. Shoot me with a bullet dipped in cyanide.

And Nagin thinks it's a good thing. What an idiot he is. [EDIT]

Well R&R is saying that "Power 102.9" will be billed as a Rhythmic, and already they have brought in "Big Boy's Neighborhood" for mornings. So in other words, expect a New Orleans version of KPWR because thats what NOLA is about to get.

So, pardon my lack of knowledge, but exactly what is "rhythmic" as compared to "Hip-hop" and "R&B"?

Please give me an example of a rhythmic song to demonstrate the difference between that, compared with the velvet of Luther Vandross with R&B, and the gutter utterances of 50 cent singing to the filthy underwear exhibitionists of hip hop who disrespect women and live on drugs and bling bling (and die young).

Leaning more to the urban hits that are played on top 40 compared to more of the hardcore stuff.

Think last incarnation of Kiss 104.1

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythmic_Top_40

But my guess is if they don't have a good idea in place (Citadel NOLA has had issues with making stations people want that they haven't inherited from a former company), it won't last ala Kiss 104

The station is only billed as Rhythmic, but will more than likely be an Urban outlet. Citadel will try to sell both POWER 102.9 and OLD SCHOOL 106.7 as a combo to certain advertisers. As far as Big Boy Mornings goes, he's probaly the hottest syndicated choice for mornings now on Urban and Rhythmic stations compared to Smiley and Parr. Hopefully, Citadel doesn't screw up like they did POWER 99 "Nonstop Hip-Hop" in Memphis 2004-2006.

Cmon, did Nagin really have that in the press release? Is that a joke or something?

A harmless quote in a harmless press release. What's he supposed to say, "Forget 102.9, I'm still listening to Q?"

I'm sure New Orleanians have more important complaints of Mayor Nagin.

Ok I heard the kickoff of poWer 102.9 and they didn't really make a big deal about it. I thought they would come on live and introduce the station. Instead they introduced the new station with a pre recorded spot and went into a song. Blah.
