New Orleans TV question - On or off air

Are any of the New Orleans TV stations actually transmitting a signal over the air? I have heard "I am not sure" from a few friends that lived about 60-100 miles out. I have no connections to anyone who is still working in that market.

I know some of the stations are streaming and some also have direct lines to the cable systems (that are still running) and to Satellite. But they are all using nearby affiliates of their network in some cases and others sister stations to cover New Orleans' emergency situations.

According to each website though regular schedules with network and syndicated shows still show up. This information should be updated better even if its from the providers of the listings.

Stations I wonder about

4 WWL TV (CBS) Belo - believe they are sending a signal by line to cable systems. Might be on the air...unsure.

6 WDSU (NBC) Hearst - same scenerio.

8 WVUE (Fox) Emmis - unsure what is going on.

26 WGNO (ABC) Tribune - I believe they are using WBRZ facilities in nearby Baton Rouge...believe they send by wire to cable systems.

38 WNOL (WB) Tribune - believe they are dark

54 WUPL (UPN) CBS to be Belo - unsure what is going on.

20 WHNO (ind) - dark I think

PBS stations - no idea

But if anyone knows what is going on post.

Thanks.

The Louisiana radio board has this well-covered.

Heard they are, but at limited times to save fuel. They are on around the clock via cable, internet, and various other stations nationwide running its signal on their digital feeds.

Last I heard, their tranny is down, but it's still available through other means (see above).

WDSU is currently originating from WAPT in Jackson, MS, with Orlando's WESH pinch-hitting occasionally.

Last I heard, they moved to WALA in Mobile, but they're not broadcasting at all.

WGNO's own tranny is still down.

And if they were up, they would be simulcasting WBRZ/WGNO.

Simulcasting WWL, if they're up.

Not sure about WLAE (affiliated with LPB), though WYES is currently down, as I last checked.

Here's what I read...

On air via WUPL-54 Slidell and on the web. Studios are at Louisiana Public Broadcasting in Baton Rouge, and a temporary studio at the transmitter in Gretna.

>
> 6 WDSU (NBC) Hearst - same scenerio.

On air via WPXL-49 New Orleans, whose transmitter is operable. Studios are at sister stations WAPT Jackson, MS and WESH Daytona Beach, FL

>
> 8 WVUE (Fox) Emmis - unsure what is going on.

Temporary studios being established at WALA Mobile, and a temporary low-power transmitter is due to go on air in the next few days in New Orleans. WVUE plans to feed its signal to DirecTV and air the Saints NFL game this Sunday. News programming could resume anytime.

WBRZ continues to originate the programming feed for both WBRZ and WGNO. Station supposed to be available on cable and DirecTV.

Correct. No time frame for relaunch.

> 54 WUPL (UPN) CBS to be Belo - unsure what is going on.

Simulcasting WWL's programming signal for the forseeable future.
>
> 20 WHNO (ind) - dark I think

No info.

> PBS stations - no idea

Both WYES and WLAE are down for a while. Facilities badly damaged. WLAE may be back sooner with help from Louisiana Public Broadcasting, but the transmitter is said to still be under water.

Are they wall to wall coverage? or are they running CBS programming where WWL TV usually does? Alot of situations where CBS affiliates preempt programming for important news coverage they tend to bump off game shows and cartoons but usually cover sports live. Also prime time preemptions tend to be a last resort such as the weekend before the storm. Soaps tend to be moved to overnight such as Young & Restless and Bold & Beautiful and As The World Turns. If Guiding Light is preempted it generally does not air on overnights unless it was the only preemption or one of two. Same with One Life To Live with ABC. All My Children and General Hospital are bigger priorities.

Are they running any regular shows yet?

So they are regular programming yet?

I hear that they have both wall to wall feeds to cable for WGNO and ABC shows for WNOL along with WB.

I heard possibly they are being sent to cable systems..UNSURE though

I heard they are in negotiations with WGNO to air their programming if they hit the air first...UNSURE AGAIN.

First of all, WDSU's staff are all at WAPT; WESH's staff occasionally substitutes for WDSU on occasion.

Second -- WESH's city of license is Daytona Beach; its main studios are actually in Winter Park, just north of Orlando (though they have auxillary studios in Daytona and its tranny in Orange City, just southwest of Daytona).

Personally, for practical purposes, I always refer to WESH as an Orlando station, rather than a Daytona one.
Edited by rugrats1 on 09/09/05 08:20 PM.

WHNO's website says they'll be back in about 30 days.

I'm about 40 miles west of New Orleans and I'll give you the scoop...

Nope Broadcasting from the transmitter in Gretna.. They started limiting the time I beleive to conserve fuel but when the transmitter is shut off, it is said they just reloop a few hours for web streamers and the feeds to sat TV... Cable in my area picks them off of the air.

Off air technically.. They are broadcasting on WPXL 49 however in the New Orleans market

>

Supposed to be originating programming from a sister station in Mobile but they are currently not on air broadcasting off of their transmitter....

Probably to small dish tv and some of the cable companies but none in my area that pick up off air... They are dark from their transmitters right now.. Said to be relaying on air broadcast of WBRZ-Baton Rouge (who is broadcasting their normal line up over cox cable in Baton Rouge

>

Yep

Relaying WWL TV 4 mainly for northshore (north of the Lake) residents i'm guessing as that's where the tranmistter is.

OFF air at this time but keep an eye on the Louisiana board since Big Tymer has cleaned it up and updates of NOLA radio and TV are happening currently.

They're supposed to be back on this weekend, broadcasting from Mobile via DirecTV and internet, and on a low-powered temporary transmitter in New Orleans. Programming will be a 15-minute newscast, running in a loop and refreshed every 2 hours. The only non-news programming is the Saints games, though commercials will be replaced with news updates.

On a side note, WDSU's signal is being simulcast in Houston on KPXB/49, KBPX-LP/33 & KPXB-DT/5, during the 5-7am and 6pm-11pm time periods (when "i" isn't running infomercials ;-) )

BTW, according the piece running right now (9pm CDT Sunday evening), the WDSU tower survived, the transmitter building was under water and one of the WDSU reporters and a camera-man spent a period of time on the roof of the transmitter building...
