New Orleans TV Situation

Apparently, WWL is the only TV station still operating in New Orleans. Brian Andrews from WFOR (CBS4) in Miami is reporting for WFOR from WWL, and was talking with the air team at WWL. Last night one of the meteorologists, John Gumm, left abruptly as his wife was having a baby, so the station abruptly had to bring in a new meteorologist.

Despite the conditions, WWL is running a great operation.

WDSU has basically shut down. The team at WDSU has locked up the station, and a team is now broadcasting to New Orleans, at least through the internet, from WESH-2 (NBC) in Orlando, it's an interesting mix of WESH and WDSU graphics, with the WESH set. The team that locked up WDSU is enroute to WAPT-16 in Jackson, MS. The Orlando airstaff currently on WDSU is hyping the 87.7FM frequency of the station, so the station's OTA signal must still be up.

Anyone know what's going on with the Fox and ABC stations?

I wonder what happened at 11PM ET, when WESH is supposed to have their own newscast for their usual Central Florida viewers?

They mentioned often to WESH viewers that WESH is simucast their sister station on WDSU.

What about WVUE FOX 8, and WGNO ABC 26? Are they still broadcasting? Does WVUE uses FOX Mobile simulcast? How about WGNO ABC 26? Are they using other news studio like WWL using LSU Studios?

They're doing 11PM news with WESH graphics and intros, while a WDSU info-bar runs across the bottom of screens tuned to WDSU. The whole newscast is about Hurricane Katrina anyhow, so there is no Central Florida news being aired on WDSU.

Maybe WDSU will be set up at Jackson, MS by 11:35, when WESH is expected to go to "Sunday Sports Extra".

WESH anchors have mentioned several times that WDSU staff is expected to resume broadcasting from WAPT in Jackson at 11:00. I assume that they were referring to 11 CDT (or midnight EDT).

But not for much longer. The station plans to hand off to their Baton Rouge (or was it Jackson, MS?) remote site at midnight local (1 AM ET). Not sure how that will affect their webcast, but WSDU's is definitely down for the count. The stream is feeding, but there's nothing to feed. Just black.

WDSU's webcast signal is still up, simulcasting WESH with WDSU graphics as of 11:46PM.

I checked before I posted before and the WDSU feed was black as of about 25 minutes ago. Obviously, feeds are going to be quite intermittent all night. Right now, WWL's is apparently down. The last thing I saw from them was an interview with - of all people - Mayor Paul Capitano (I didn't know I had relations in government!).

The feed's back now - barely, but the reporting is evidently not from the WWL studios. I believe this might be the Jackson station - with a chromakey background in use that isn't correctly synched with at least one of the cameras.

The Weather Channel is continually showing a shot of WVUE's skycam, so I assume they are still on.

At 12:00AM, WDSU-6's simulcast of WESH-2 in Orlando abruptly cut off as the WESH airstaff praised the technology possible. The simulcast of WDSU-6 was replaced by a simulcast of WAPT-16 in Jackson, MS. WAPT-16's chief meteorologist is currently on air, while WDSU's meteorologist Dan Milham is doing research and will be on the air later in the early morning hours.

The WWL-4/New Orleans webcast is not working at the moment, although it appears that the station has switched operations to another station.

Ditto for Fox News, which was also using WVUE's skycam extensively.

Actually, WWL is broadcasting from Baton Rouge. It's WDSU that's originating from Jackson.

WWL is at the Manship School of Mass Communications at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. This explains the Windows Movie Maker-quality titles, the sound is non-existant for viewers during a phone call, only the airstaff can hear him. It's high-school quality; broadcasting students are manning the equipment. It's basically a joke compared to the excellent programming that the station was doing prior to 11:00PM CST.

IMHO, the #1 station, WWL, has immediately become the #3 station, behind WDSU and the Fox station, which we only know exists due to a skycam. But knowing how this caught everybody by surprise, I'm surprised that any of these stations are still on the air. Kudos to all involved.

Why do you consider this a "joke"? The WWL team is handling the coverage the best they can. It's clear these students you spoke of have never had to set up things for this sort of emergency but under the circumstances I'd cut them a lot of slack here. At least everyone is safe and the local presence is being maintained.

And when the TV people get out of the way, you know it is going to be bad. From what I have seen online, everyone is doing the best they can.

I checked the internet webcasts of New Orleans television stations from 2:30 am to 3:00 am EDT. Only two New Orleans stations had internet webcasts during that time period.

The webcast of WDSU 6 was broadcasting from WABT 16 Jackson,MS then it switched over to WESH 2 Orlando,FL. However, the webcast of WDSU 6 is now blank.

The webcast of WWL 4 thru windows media player playlist indicated that its internet webcast stream was coming from KHOU 11 from Houston,TX.

Since I don't live in New Orleans, I am curious about whether the WWL 4 news team anchors are broadcasting live from the WWL 4 studios in New Orleans or from the KHOU 11 studios in Houston?

Are the viewers in the New Orleans market able to see the internet webcasts live OTA?

Does anybody know if the New Orleans television stations are using their local anchors or are they using out of town anchors as far as OTA broadcasts and internet webcasts are concerned?

Losing Towers?

My biggest question, I was watching the WWL feed all day yesterday, but they claimed that even though if they went off the air in New Orleans that they'd be back on from Baton Rouge. My question is, isn't it possible they could lose towers? Or were they built to withstand hurricanes?

Any info?
