New Ownership Limits

I know a radio salesperson who made the journey and called on Crane in person. Nice chat, but they didn't want to buy. You are correct about New Pane, except not just friendship with Dr. Bill. Related by marriage, actually.

Odd that Michael didn't mention his relationship to me. Hmmm...

As to the salesperson's visit to Bob Crane, why did s/he do that? There are plenty of local businesses here with money to spend on advertising. Personally, I think it's laziness and a maybe a lack of desire to do anything but deal with reps and agencies.

I remember when I was at the tiny potboiler, KWUN in Concord under Bill Adler. He beat the bushes for every conceivable advertiser. He sold everything there was to sell, including a Mutual news adjacency that didn't exist! (We were instructed to cut off the network sounder, run the spot, then play the network sounder from a cart.) Back in the days when the station was daytime only he actually sold the sign-off to a restaurant. ("The day is ending for KWUN, but the night is just beginning for John Jawad's Pioneer Inn in Clayton....")

Adler was able to turn a many-time money-loser into a profitable enterprise that allowed him to live in a posh home and send his kids to the finest schools.

If a podunk 500 watt station can do that, why not a 50kw station?
