NEW PD AT K-HITS

Yesterday All-Access reported that Classic Hits (KCCL) K-HITS announced that Results sister station KEWB (Redding, CA) PD Rico Garcia to take on the "Dir./Programming & Promotion" duties in Sac.

What makes me raise an eyebrow is that KEWB is Top40/Rhythmic station and it's not like Garcia is an aging vet, so what does Dave Shakes and Results have up their sleeve?

Actually nothing.

My source (who interviewed for the PD gig) says that the job was low pay (well below market, pay one would get for just jocking midday maybe PM Drive) for the responsibility. But Results has none to speak of (not their fault so far) with the station, so low pay is not too surprising for a station that has underperformed, flipped formats some 3 times in the past 4 years or so, and has had an ownership change. So the guy/gal they hired likely fit into the financial structure/box Results was offering.

My person said Dave Shakes is a good guy and has a real keen focus on what to do, but a format flip is not what is coming.

As a fan of Oldies, I hope they succeed. Would have loved for my friend to have gotten the gig, then maybe he/she would have hired me!

Low pay is better than No Pay...right? I like the fact that K-Hits has a couple of old school Sacramento air personalities in Big Jim Hall and Joey Mitchell.

...and let's hope Jim and Joey are retained for the long-run (and
Results Radio is known to be a long-run type of company)...

I was rooting for another of the Results Radio ilk to get the PD job,
but we'll see how it goes with Mr. Garcia. I say this as I think of Paul
Revere and The Raiders' "Good Thing"...

The pay thing is what you can afford (literally) to live on, some can do it for less.

My person wanted the job, but felt the responsibility & commitment was not reciprocal in regard to the salary. She/he understood the issues Results were dealing with in regard to their finances with 92.1. However what had happened prior, and the situation K-HITS is in now was not his/her fault, so one should not have to bare the brunt or poor decisions and execution of the past. If the salary would have been even close to or a bit below the market rate, he/she would have jumped, but the rate isn't even in the ballpark, my person said it was Stockton pay for a PD (and not even good Stockton Pay). No offense to radio folk in Stockton.

Good for Results if they got who they wanted.

Funny thing is, Results has an oldies station in Chico that has great ARB numbers, some of the best in the nation for an oldies station. Why not give the gig to him? He's even programmed in Sacramento as well. Kind of a slap in his face if you ask me...

Did the PD of the Results station in Chico apply for the gig?

Knowing first hand... Results pay their employee's what the "indvidual" is worth and not the position. My take on it is that they find much more value in Garcia than the forementioned applicant.

As far as Mr. Michaels is concerned, he is a great guy (kinda crazy with his kilt and all) but overall a good PD. He fits perfectly in the position that he is in Chico, but I'm willing to bet that Results will soon show Sacramento a side of Radio they haven't seen in a long time.

Regarding the "kilt," when I worked with him he came in a skirt that looked nothing like a kilt, at which he promptly told me that he just likes wearing skirts. Not that there's anything wrong with that. He's a sweet guy, and it's too bad he didn't get offered the gig.

As far as paying what people are worth, you and I both know, McLovin, that our friends that work for at least one of their sticks are definitely NOT getting paid what they're worth! And that's probably standard ops at all their stations.

That said, I think radio is becoming such a thing that the big guys that run everything know we're much happier getting paid squat, rather than the alternative, which would be digging ditches, bagging groceries, and dj-ing at strip clubs! That's why if you won't work for what the man be payin', well someone else who loves doing what they do will. For me personally, it's never been about the money. I drive down the road and look at all the people around me heading to their crappy jobs in stores, offices, garages, hospitals, and I thank god I'm headed to a place where I can crack jokes, make people laugh, play music I like, sit in an air conditioned building (usually), and have fun. Plus I get to go to concerts and events for free, get free grub, and take my kid and her friends to Disney Ice for free, which isn't cheap! I wouldn't trade it for any other job. ;D

What Clinger said is true.

But the person I know who talked to them about the gig has large market PD experience, he/she is not about the ego, but simply said investment goes both ways, if Results wanted his/her time and talent (and a lot of it) then they need to cough up more of their treasure to make the partnership more equitable for both parties.

This is no knock on the guy who got the gig, and the fact that Results promoted from within is good, but delusions of Results paying what an "individual" is worth is just that, it is what someone is willing to do the work for.

And that is the problem.

Many complain about pay in the industry, but it will likely not improve because there are folks who'd rather accept the lower pay to do what they love then to say no to it.

I have no problem with that as long as that person is not someone who complains about poor wages.

Until those who rail against bad pay turn down the bad wages and until those who are not desperate to take them resist, there will always be someone to work for less than the job should pay, and radio knows this.

I am guilty of this as well, but have in the past few years decided that if the job was below market value, that I would not accept it, which has forced me to do other things until that better offers comes along.

Yes, I heard that he wears kilt's now. I thought it odd, but lately I've seen a few kilt wearing guys in my travels so I guess there's a small but ever so rabid group of Scots who like to go traditional. It would be cooler in the summer months and it does get warm in Chico. Maybe it's a way to be noticed like the Smokey Hat that Shotgun Tom Kelly wears?

I don't know if he applied for the job, but I would think so with his connections to Sacramento. But that's just speculation. Maybe they're afraid that the station he programs in Chico would drop if he left. He gets really good numbers there.

I used to work with Steve on and off over the years....at one point he lived in the apartment complex I used to manage.

I recently heard him do a trivia contest drop-in (pre-recorded it sounds like) on the Sac oldies station. Is he no longer the PD in Chico?

Well he is on the website for khits and on the website for the oldies in chico. maybe they are using him at both stations. probably not a bad idea consider he does have a name in sac.

Steve still programs KCEZ (Oldies 102.1) in Chico, and does morning-drive...
Steve told me he's quite happy with the arrangement of the Chico gig, plus his voice-tracking the
weekend contest bits for KCCL (K-HITS)...
