New PD at KHMX

CBS moves Bob Neumann from its Hot AC in Tampa to KHMX. He's also run Hot AC WRMF in West Palm Beach among others.

The station is still going to tank. Time for SportsRadio 96.5 Houston's new home for the Houston Astros, and the Mighty Rockets. This is Yao Ming and I listen to the new SportsRadio 96.5 I can already hear it in my head, just a matter of when. SportsRadio 96.5 is the new KSRR-FM Houston. (They would have to buy the calls from Provo, UT's KSRR, I think.) Calls meaning K-SportsRadioR.

It's high time!...for 96.5 to flip. The ratings SUCK and they show it; therefore, quit overlapping 95.7 some-what and flip to a much needed Urban format.

Why another sports station? How about classic r&b and hip hop?

I know one thing, this market does NOT need another 15th sports station, point blank!

But since KHMX now has a new PD, lets see what he can do with this station first. If it still tanks, then a flip may be necessary, maybe to a much needed Urban or Urban-leaning Rythmic competitor to KBXX, and change Hot back to a straightforward CHR like it was the first year.

Unfortunately, that will still make them similar sounding to their sister station, KKHH.

15th Sports Station, I am sorry but there are many as 15 stations in Spanish than in Sports, including Deportes. I think it would help them, and be easy to promote at the games. Listen to the game on the new SportsRadio 96.5 they can even use some of the old 97Rock clips saving money. 97.5 tanks because they are a rimshot. 96.5 has a good signal. Thus, if they turned off the stereo pilot the peoples of College Station and Weimar, Texas could tune in, meaning more cume. Classic R&B is nice, but I don't think it will gain more than a 3.2 share if best. If Hot became CHR, 96.5 went Urban, you would have to compete against Majic, Box, KRBE, and KODA, to go with Sports at most you would be competing against rimshots = more profitable. And they are in it to make money, not to please every Joe, Kim, Juan, Alicia, Don, or John in town.

How did he do in Tampa?

About a decade ago, i faithfully listened to Power 97.5 the clearest way i could, regardless of how strong the signal was. Try understanding that and apply it to ESPN 97.5 and you'll be fine.

(I do stand corrected though on the second half, KKHH should just tweak to urban since they almost sound like one anyway and tweak KHMX to CHR since they almost sound like it too.)

and the signal was horrible on 97.5, could pick it up in West Houston, but not Southwest Houston. The closer I got to Mo. City, the weaker the signal of 97.5, their competition used the Mo. City sticks, and has the stronger signal. Sports radio makes money if done right, and on a listenable frequency. You have the Texans, Rockets, and the Astros. Even soccer. Sports radio covers the demographics of Houston. White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Other. A Sports radio station can cover the high school sports scene. I say start something fresh and new rather than simulcasting an AM counterpart. Also add KHOU TV sports also aired on the FM band. If I were CBS there is no looking back, just like Nike, Just Do it! Before the flip Mix should play the first song aired on Mix 96.5 when it first starting, and start the flip off with a Houston Oiler's game replay, followed by the 1994 NBA finals with the Rockets. Laser efx with "Welcome to the all new SportsRadio 96.5 KSRR-FM Houston."

You guys have some really good points. But, wasnt this post originally about mix gaining a new PD???? I actually would like to see mix flip!!! Since most of the converasation is about flipping to urban or urban ac or FM sports......

Moving 610 sports am to the FM band would make plenty of sense and would be my choice but... isn't Gavin Spittle the PD so that would mean the NEW PD would have to go or Mr. Spittle is out of there. I don't think they would hire a new PD only to flip and fire him... Do You?

Another Urban is MUCH needed considering the other urban station in this city only plays about ummmm 3 songs

and its been since 2004 Majic 102.1 has had any competition (Power 97.5) so another Urban AC is EVEN MORE NEEDED. but again.... flipping to that doesn't seem possible because.... Like the post originally said.. They Just hired a new with a HOT AC back ground so it is possible that that's the direction they will go in... so bottom line.... WE ARE STILL STUCK WITH DRIED UP HOUSTON RADIO..... Sad but True.

Is it me, or do most of the people on this board treat radio like Fantasy Football?

Best post EVER. Well played, Mr. Davis.

Anyone remember the first few years of Mix? It was exciting and different. No one ever tried a hybrid like they did. If I'm not mistaken, they were one of the (if not the) pioneers of the Hot AC format. Their "mix" of music was breath taking then. Would love to see something like that again. It would have to come from someone who thinks outside the small, narrow, corporate radio box, which means it probably won't happen.

Doesn't Clear Channel do that a lot? Hire and fire new PDs? It is not something unheard of. Maybe he is part of the transtition team. Only CBS knows for sure! Or just in for a couple of books. Or he might want to program Sports.

Thanks for the comment about the early days of Mix. I was there in those days even though I was p/t. It was good. I'd like to hear that kind of creative radio in Houston again. I absolutely loved being part of it.

CBS confirms an all-sports "Fan" for Tampa, to launch in August
Hosts to be announced, but CBS Radio announces that the long-rumored sports station will replace hot AC "Play 98.7" WSJT. No specific start date, beyond "August." CBS already runs sports-formatted WQYK (1010), and that station's assistant PD Mike Pepper will be the PD of "Sportsradio 98.7 the Fan." CBS market manager Ben Hill says "locally-based on-air personalities, and a programming team with years of experience in Tampa will help shape the station as a place listeners can trust for the most honest, engaging and interactive sports talk." CBS will be lining up against Clear Channel's WDAE (620). The TampaBay.com site says there is another competitor: Cox Media Group's new male-talk "Bone 102.5" WHPT, with Bubba the Love Sponge in mornings.

Let's see CBS owns KHMX in Houston, and it is a Hot AC Station.

Question is how long before CBS pulls the plug on Mix 96.5?
