New PD at KMTT

Surprise in Portland as Kevin Welch heads to Seattle leaving KINK. Two big hires this week in Seattle with MOVIN's new hot morning host and Welsh, who is a genius with music. KINK is the premiere AAA in the country and a lot of the credit goes to Welch. He will be missed. Seattle radio is about to get even more fun to watch. It will be a ya ya good time in the Emerald City. Look for MOVIN and KMTT to grow.

This will be news to KBCO, KFOG and WXRT.

Actually, given their ratings, it will NOT be a surprise to KFOG and WXRT. But for porposes of the story, I'd really doubt that any of them really mind KINK getting the label.

To be fair, the Legacy of KINK goes well beyond Welch and Dennis, however, kudos for carrying the torch forward and good luck in your future at Entercom, Seattle.

BCO and XRT are great in their own right. The real disappointment over the years has been WBOS, what a shame.

This is a great move for KMTT, which was clearly patterned after KINK from the beginning. KINK was a trailblazer in this format going back to the late-70s. The Mountain lost its way once Chris Mayes left and this should put them back on the right track... just as long as corporate lets him do his job.

Congrats to all at the Mountain! That's my favorite station these days. I enjoy Marty, the :20 funnies, stereo type feature, the music...etc. Should be interesting to see what "improvements" will be made.

I got to hear a couple of years of Kevin's work at "KF-95"/KFXD-FM in Boise.

At the time, he had a very nice blend of music and a true presentation.

Light years beyond the product he left behind.

Amy can definitely hold her own.

Somehow this got posted under the wrong topic. Sorry..don't know how to delete! :(

Let's hope the new PD brings the Mountain back to where it belongs. My Gawd, how many more re-treads do we have to hear on the Mountain. I mean, if I can hear a song the Mountain plays on three or four other stations in the market, something is wrong. Here's hoping the KINK magic makes it north and puts the Mountain back where it should be.

Right now the Kink "magic" includes Augustana, Norah Jones, Maroon 5 and Killers. Don't hold your breath.

That's FINE. The library should include popular, known, wonderful groups/singers like those referenced. But the magic of The Mountain USED TO BE that they would play deeper cuts & then these would be followed by something a lot more obscure. When was the last time, for one tiny example, that I heard Tasmin Archer on The Mountain? YEARS AGO. And, incidentally, I wouldn't own her album & would have never heard of her had it not been for The Mountain. That is The Mountain that I miss. I don't tune in there to hear Norah's "Thinking About You" but I DO tune in there to discover her version of "Easy As the Rain" with her group The Little Willies.

I'm not holding my breath, but I am crossing my fingers.

I hope this works out well. My perspective is that AAA really works with someone who knows music and knows the market and has the freedom to implement their vision. That's what made Mountain work with Chris Mays ... and at KINK I think people who have been in business a long time (like Stan Mak) are confident enough to let a programmer go at it and succeed. I hope Seattle Entercom leadership has maturity and confidence to let that happen and neither Seattle nor Pennsylvania leadership try to micromanage the station. But, I'm apprehensive because "micromanage" and "radio business" tend to go hand-in-hand these days. Nature of the beast and also what destroyed all the great stations along the way.

First off KINK is a..for lack of a better term.. wimpier station than the Mountain. The Mountain refers to itself as "World Class Rock", while I don't ever hear KINK even mention the word "Rock". In fact while listening to KINK in recent months you kind of get the impression that there's an edict amongst the staff to call the product music as compared to rock. KINK's primary positioning is "True to the music".

I'm not a fan of KINK and would rather see the Mountain remain a station that I feel is more cutting edge as compared to the clubiness feeling I get when sampling KINK. As for Mr. Welch I'm sure he's matured some over the years and that he, Dennis and Entercom conclude that KINK is unique to Portland while KMTT has its own stamp here in Seattle.

Lately, I've heard Andrew Bird, Patsy Cline, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Jeff Buckley and Al Green on the Mountain. So, it's not like the Mountain has become some sort of hits machine. And, they've managed to play a lot of interesting music and get good ratings. Right now, the Mountain is ranked #3 with adults. Obviously someone knows what they're doing. It's a shame to see this good staff have to go through another programming change just because local management doesn't get it. I'll predict that the new PD makes the Mountain sound a lot more like KINK. And that's not a good thing.

The Mountain can definitely stand to get a bit more like KINK. Meaning dropping the lousy classic rock stuff. I heard "Dream On" by Aerosmith the other day on the Mountain. Who wants to hear that dumb song again? Only the apes that listen to classic rock all day.

The Mountain has more of a rock sound than KINK, and Kevin can maintain that, get ratings, and still improve the station 1000%, without taking on KINK's sleepier aspects.

It's a Seattle station. I'm sure Kevin is well aware of it.

I guess that means the more evolved monkeys want to hear Jewel, Five for Fighting, Augustana and Marc Cohen, all of which I've heard today on KMTT. If this Kevin guy can improve the Mountain 1000% this way I guess I'll be forced to listen to Jack a bit more these days.
