Interesting. I wonder what The Peak version 2.0 will bring.

Given the guy's spent more than half his career programming key alt stations (the X, man!), I'm betting he wasn't brought in just to add more Foreigner tunes to the rotation. Maybe a gradual, several-month conversion from AC to Modern AC to something a bit... ah... edge-ier.

Last night around 10:30 they were playing "Wishing (If I had a photograph of you)" By Flock of Seagulls!
It has been around a decade since I last heard this song on commercial radio. If this is any indication of where the Peak my be headed, I think I'm going to like it.

Could it be that the Peak goes the direction of KROQ LA? Or Triple A?

I liekd 91x the station phil manning was last at but i hated how he added some active stuff that does nto belong on alt like metellica and the like not very much but stuff like that does not belong on alternative radio. There are crossovers but metellica ain't it so in closing i wish him and the peak well maybe he will give the edge a run for there money bear in mind when the edge had kzon as there competitor there trends were higher so yime will tell,

Happy holidays

It hurts me to read your posts.

I would vote for what KYSR is doing right now in L.A.

Also on the way home today I heard a promo from Mr Peakerman say something like, Boy I feel fuzzy today, I think I need a reboot. Hmmm if you read into it, could be the new Peak

I thought it was just me. Thanks for letting me know it isn't.

:>

I have been checking out the peak more and more and I think the shift to at least a modern ac iis under way. I am hearing way more alternative type titles than I have in the past. I wonder how long before the offical switch takes place.

Who's to say that The Peak will not be AAA like The Mountain in Tucson?

That could happen - but it seems unlikely since the format doesn't have a good track record here (I don't think that the original Zone from the early to mid 90's had much ratings success with AAA). Plus, consider that People Meters are coming, and they generally seem to be favoring the more mainstream formats (which AAA isn't) in the markets where they've been launched.

It won't be the Mountain. That would be foolish. It will be a female-based mod ac/alt. It's a format that has worked well in Phoenix. The time is right, and my money's on Phil and Bonneville. Management FYI: just make sure that you showcase Mary Reilly. She's the one.

It is interesting how a top 40 station like KRQ and a AAA station like The Mountain can work in a city less than 100 miles away from Phoenix, but those types of stations do not necessarily work in Phoenix (Kiss is more Top 40 now).

I’m no expert on the differences between the two markets, but I have some basic theories on why AAA and Mainstream Top 40 (the KRQ type, not the Kiss type) work in Tucson but not Phoenix.

As a whole, AAA seems to be successful in more liberal-leaning markets. Looking at the Arizona presidential results by county, Tucson/Pima County voted for Obama. AAA also works well in places like Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Denver – all very much “blue state” areas (although that may not historically be the case with Denver -- I'm not sure.)

For Mainstream Top 40…I think it comes down to KRQ being around for so long (haven’t they been in this format for 31 years straight?). When a station exists for that length of time with the same format, sometimes it can win because of the heritage.

I don’t know if they’ve ever had a full-signaled FM competitor, but they’ve been able to win the battle against whoever has gone up against them. Of course, with Clear Channel owning both KRQ and crosstown Rhythmic KOHT (Hot 98.3), the two stations are presumably programmed to not step on each others’ toes.

Also, perhaps Tucson not growing as quickly as Phoenix over the years (less desire for big conglomerates to buy stations in the market & launch serious competition), and possibly having fewer transients than Phoenix (heritage may be a bigger factor in markets with a more stable population), also contribute to KRQ’s success.

With all of that said, I’ve listened to KRQ on and off for the last 15 years, and I think it’s consistently been one of the best-sounding Mainstream Top 40 stations in the country. That could certainly be a factor too :)
