New PD at The Wolf

He added some rock to WSM-FM 95.5 Nashville when he was there...about 1 song per hour ranging from James Taylor, Eagles, Elvis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger, etc.

Let's hope he does something with KPLX...or at least some Texas/Americana stuff. I seldom listen to KPLX...it has become stale and dull with an overload of "estrogen country" (i.e. Rascal Flatts/Keith Urban stuff...country shouldn't be 70s AC-sounding mush played by "guys" with more make-up and hair highlights than a Highland Park trophy wife). It needs to go back to something with a little more edge and attitude.

A variation of WSM-FM or perhaps KRPT 92.5 outside San Antonio or even a variation of "rock & country" (http://www.edisonresearch.com/home/archives/2006/08/the_formats_tha.php) ... or just adding some of those elements to KPLX would be better than what's there now.

The Star-T says today that John Sebastian is the new PD. Apparently, at other country stations he's been at, he's added "country-tinged" rockers like Bob Seger and the Eagles to the line-up.

Anyone know what this means for KPLX? I used to really like The Wolf, but find myself tuning in less and less over the last few months.

I wonder how Smokey Rivers feels having been screwed by KVIL and now being passed up at the Wolf?

Different Smokey Rivers. Smokey Rivers a super nice guy went to pHoenix after Infinity /CBS nixed his plans for a KVIL overhaul. Smokey Rivers at the Wolf, "borrowed" the name from the prior mentioned "Smokey" years back and they actually met a couple of years ago. Wolf Smokey is a decent man and has done many things for the station, etc. Though he is constantly the target of being boring ,etc.but its behind the scenes that count. Is he disaappointed he wasn't selected to replace the "terrible Cook"? I am sure he is ,But he has always let his spirit of cooperation win over ego, and did what was expected of him, and exceeded that in a positive light.

Maybe this guy can do something with the Wolf, the last time I checked their ratings they were out of the Top 10.

I've known John Sebastian for years and I can tell you this: he's the most "out-of-the-box" thinker you'll ever encounter! It is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to predict what he'll do with KPLX...but IF the Wolf has a ghost of a chance to returning to the top of the ratings page, John Sebastian will make it happen.

Best just sit back and be amazed! The ride with be well worth it!

Will he do what he did at wsm at Nashville, tweaking their format and adding some classic rock artist in the mix??

Probably. He'll also take away all of the jocks personality(except morning drive),make them read liner cards verbatim, forbid them to talk over the lip of a song, no phones, and ad-libs are grounds for dismissal.

When Cumulus bought the Wolf from Susquehana(sp?), the higher ups pretty much eleminated the Texas artists that made the station sound so unique. Sebastian will kill all of them in favor of England Dan and John Ford Coley and Firefall.

Is Barry Corbin still the station voice? If he is, he'll be gone soon.

Sebastian is known for going to a station, "tweaking" it, then leaving after spending a year there. He'll leave bragging about taking the station to its best ratings ever. Keep in mind the only reason WSM had one good book with Sebastian in charge is that Nashville was curious about he was going to do with it. Thanks to an agressive ad campaign, people tuned in long enough for WSM to be #1 country in Music City. Shortly after that, people weren't impressed with AC rock songs and jocks with no personality.

I don't see him staying long in Dallas.

Well said. What gives him cache is that he does the unexpected. Adds new color and music etc, but there is a shelf life to what he does. Once the marketing money gets back to normal (he'll get fresh dollars for awhile)... and the music is not a suprise anymore...he'll be looking to leave. I cant imagine him long term anywhere.

I wonder if John worked for Century 21/TM Century/Jones TM in the 80's? It sounds like he tweaks country stations to a cross country type format, very similar to the CC format Century 21 offered.

Sounds like CUMULUS's kind of guy.

We'll see what Mr. Sebastian does after Monday, because that's when his first day to work is, is on Monday the 12th. I'm hoping he'll tweak the format and add some classic rock and classic country in the mix.

Just a huch, but I bet the Smokey in Phoenix wasn't exactly the first to come up with that jock name.

Smokey-Phoenix used it many many years ago in the N.E...Another radio announcer heard him and used it in another market(Penn) that was the future Smokey-Dallaa Wolf. Smokey 1 called him up then, they talked and smokey 1 wished him luck with the name. Years later they met in DFW.

Some classic "Southern" rock and an increase in "Texas country" plays would be an improvment and differentiate KPLX from KSCS.

Not a smart move. On average The Wolf has been top 3 25-54. #1 anglo station 25-54 at times. They'll bounce back from their 2.9 because KSCS sounds pitiful! Adding Rock/old country on The Wolf would kill them.

A smattering of Tx Country in the day mixed with the Hits and more Tx Country at night would be the ticket. Oh and put better talent on in Mornings, Night and overnights!! That's why you got a 2.9 Put Amy B back on Middays, Cody back in afternoons or better yet OUT THE DOOR. He sounds too much like a VOX PRO.

Yeah, that night show sucks! No talent. None. That guy should be stoned because he is that bad.

Adrian walks by and picks up a stone...polishes it up and looks it over and then lunges it @ Jake missing him and hitting TheLaffer hhhhhhhahahaha..... : P
