NEW PD FOR KJR-FM/OPS MANAGER FOR CC SEATTLE

Peake Performance At CC/Seattle

Veteran programmer John Peake is headed to Seattle in the newly created position of OM of Clear Channel's seven-station cluster, and he'll also serve as day-to-day PD of Oldies KJR-FM. The cluster also includes Top 40 KBKS (106.1 Kiss FM), Rhythmic KUBE, KSGX (104.9 Gen X Radio), Country KNBQ (Q102.9), Sports/Talk KJR-AM and Sports KHHO-AM. He begins his new Seattle adventure on Monday, March 14.

For the past two years, Peake has been living in Phoenix and working as Show Director for the syndicated Johnjay & Rich morning show, which is based at Clear Channel's KZZP (104.7 Kiss FM). However, his previous programming experience is wide-ranging, including a stretch in San Francisco at former Dance outlet KNGY (Energy 92.7) and five years at crosstown KLLC (Alice @ 97.3). Before that, Peake programmed KRBE/Houston, KRQQ/Tucson and the late KWMX (Mix 107.5)/Denver and WAPI/Birmingham. Adding some international flavor to his resume, Peake also spent an extended spell in Paris working for NRJ Radio.

Interesting resume, there. Congrats on the gig, Monsieur Peake. Hope he's tired of sunshine and Mexican food in Phoenix, 'cause he won't get much of either in Seattle! But there is a decent French bakery or two in town.

From what I knew of the San Francisco stations he worked at, I think it would be nice to get something like either of them on a station up here, where the same old stale, hard-edged "classic rock" tunes like "smokin' in the boy's room" still seems to be the dominant flavor, and crowds out a whole lot of other types of interesting music that people in at least the "high tech" corners of Seattle would really go for.

I often hear people in the target demos for commercial radio in Seattle complain that they just can't find a station that they really like around here. Nothing stands out as compelling in the commercial part of the spectrum. The Mountain could do it, if they didn't rely so heavily on "classic hits" and played more new releases and album cuts from core artists. Hard to find a station that makes you want to pay attention for long, like WXRT Chicago and KINK Portland were famous for. May not be the top 5 in the market, but when you control so many signals, why not be a little creative with at least one of them? We're not all button-pushers looking for the same thing we've always heard at every spot on the dial!
