New PD for Rock 100.5: Troy Hanson

Troy Hanson -- well known in rock radio circles -- joins Cumulus from 102.9 The Buzz in Nashville, where he has served as OM/PD for the past several years (I want to say at least 7 or 8 years, perhaps longer).

He also has 94-9 Zeta in Miami and 101 WRIF in Detroit on his resume.

He's performed respectably in Nashville with a station whose budget is limited in a market that traditionally has not been very friendly to contemporary hard rock. 102.9 The Buzz is that market's equivalent to Project 9-6-1 (there are far more similarities between Buzz and 9-6-1 than there are between Buzz and Rock 100.5).

Hopefully this is a sign that 100.5's playlist will get (another) badly needed makeover. Hopefully, Val, Mike and Jan stay the friggin' heck out of his way and let him program the station properly.

Hanson has also been named the corporate PD for rock radio for Cumulus, in addition to his day-to-day programming duties at Rock 100.5.

Which means he replaces Axl as PD...who's underperformed in ratings since Rock re-invented itself for the middle market Mainstream format. Hopefully, NNX will go straight Active.

What really confused me is how they seemed to catch a nice buzz with The Bone, but when they decided to merge the format with 100.5 they didn't move the moniker over to that frequency.

And, on top of that, didn't fully segue into The Bone's complete format. They kept a huge amounts of ancient tracks from, per se, Bon Jovi and Guns 'N Roses that really just don't mix well with Five Finger Death Punch and the Black Keys.

Hm, 102.9 The Buzz has been moving more Alternative lately (Mediabase lists it as Alt., I think it's a half-assed hybrid of Active and Alt.). I do hope he does something to freshen up Rock's stale playlist, though Rock should have went Active or 99x in about September of last year. Their half-assed relaunch of Rock 100.5 left an opening a mile wide for CC to gain a virtual monopoly of modern rock listeners, and it's worked wonderfully for CC, not so much for Cumulus.

Since Cumulus may have a translator space opening up (97.9) and has expressed interest in using canned satellite formats for them, could Rock100.5 add more active rock, reduce the classic rock, and put classic rock (maybe something harder/newer than River) on 97.9?
