New PD for WPLJ

Radio-Info.Com reports on its main page that John Foxx, from KLIF in Dallas, will be the new PD and afternoon air personality.
It seems to me that the Hot A/C music played on the station is similar to that of several others, and that 'PLJ does not really stand out from the crowd. Maybe Foxx can help give it some sparkle.

Nothing against M'sieur Foxx. But is this a boat-bailing, a calculated risk with breath held for election day, a budget move, a bold quest, a demo maneuvre, sluggish 3-7P numbers, or maybe something else?

A new PD is one thing. A new PD * plus * DJ during an important work-audience shift at a highly billing station is quite another critter.

If memory serves, Bob Buchmann of WAXQ was the last person hired by NYC to be the PD plus do a drive-time shift. That was ten years ago. (Corrections welcome). But Buchmann was a 'known' voice along the stretch between Manhattan and Long Island.

Foxx is not a known voice in Soccer Grandma Country.

Who cares if he is a "known voice"? If he can relate to the audience, that's all that counts.

The John Foxx from KLIF Dallas to WPLJ portion of the story had previously been announced on June 5, 2012 -
see thread from that time here.
The appointment takes effect Mon. 7/9/2012.

The new wrinkles just announced were that Jeff Miles of WPLJ/middays has landed at Q100 (WWWQ) Atlanta in middays and as social media director, while Maurice Devoe leaves KCHZ Kansas City to fill Foxx's PD/middays position in Dallas.

I read the blurb to mean afternoon drive, Lee. Evidently it's middays, though?

Still, there is no way for the company or anyone else to know how/if John Foxx can 'relate' to the NYC audience any moreso than his predecessor had done. There had been no way to gauge this appeal -- and the decision already was handed down. He hasn't been behind the mic there yet. He is a complete stranger.
Consider the likelihood as well that Foxx's air work most likely will have secondary impact to that of the overall station sales numbers and his ability to fit into/guide the system.
Keep out of the spotlight .... dont get any wild ideas .... don't rock the boat : These are our immutable company cornerstones. I had to read and obey the manual on two interviews -- and I even suggested to another major-market GM at interview time that whomever he hired as PD be read the same philosophies.

The move, plus the move of the former midday jock to Atlanta, still has the aroma of cutbacks to me. In other words, this is not a proactive product-first venture. This a pick-one-from-column A and one from column B switch. That kind of decision or option can be gauged only by dollars at this point. John Foxx's aura might be among the last factors of this company's considerations.

in other words, jeff might have been making to much, so he got shipped back home to Texas. Bring in Newer, Cheaper guy and see if he can improve things. In another three or four years, wash, rinse, repeat.

Wonder how many DJ's have had the 10-3 spot from 1990 till now...and who was the longest..

Aside from Scott Shannon's morning show, are there any significant differences between the sound of WPLJ, and WWFS Fresh 102.7? Perhaps because 'PLJ has had the format longer, many of their listeners stick with it through force of habit.

Absolutley none, whatsoever. Fresh has the exact same playlist, same commercials and the on-air personalities say the eact same lines.
They may as well simulcast.

I'd say the main difference is the rate at which they add new music. Fresh has been very willing to take chances on new music lately, while WPLJ seems to be more conservative than ever these days.

the problem i have with PLJ's music, is i can't relate to it. anytime i pay attention to it it seems to be about break ups..when i hear that, i just switch to my sound tracks :). the songs they play that I DO like, either vanish after a week, or get over played to death like Mambo Number 5. has to be a happy medium somewhere :)
