New Phillies Voice

R&R reports that Scott Franzke, with the Texas Rangers broadcast team and KRLD Dallas, will join the Phillies broadcast team this year doing play by play & hosting the pre & post game shows. It's been a while since the Phillies went outside the local circle of voices for someone new - but it worked when they brought in Harry Kalas to replace By Saam! (Did he really say "Good Evening By Saam, this is Everybody"? one day?)

I remember when Harry was hired. He replaced Bill Campbell, and the Phillies took a lot of heat for that. It was a tough situation for Harry, but he won the town over in no time. I can't imagine a Phillies game without Harry Kalas.

"Hello By Saam" is one of those urban legends. I always heard that story, but I don't know when he said it. My favorite "By-ism" was when he was working the 1959 World Series with Mel Allen. Mel said, "Now here's the bright, afflable, and knowledgeable voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, By Saam." Byrum leaned into the microphone and said, "Right you are, Mel."

Maybe yes; maybe no.

According to the Broadcast Pioneers, both actually happened.

And if not, well, they're STILL funny.

I don't have my copy of "Voices of the Game" by Curt Smith in front of me, but I think that story is in that book too.
