New Phone Chipset - Everything but HD Radio

There's no low voltage, low power drain HD chip. Yet. There will be. Then hd will be as common in these portable devices as analog fm is now. FM radio is THE MOST REQUESTED FEATURE in portable mp3 players. That's why so many of 'em (most by now, I'd guess...'scept for Ipod) have it.

Prove it ! :D

"Desperately Seeking Portable HD"

"When Will We See Handheld HD Radios? Don't Hold Your Breath"

"So it is with great irony that while the handheld receiver provides perhaps the strongest argument for the value of HD Radio's multipath immunity, such a device remains just out of reach due to battery-life constraints. As a result, the lack of handheld HD Radio receivers - at least for the next few years - will keep the fledgling technology from becoming a player in the increasingly important portable audio industry. Given the strength and projected growth of that sector, this absence could have significant impact on HD Radio's success, as well as to the radio industry's overall relevance to future audiences."

My Sony Ericsson w810i has RDS built in - most of their phones have had this feature, especially in Europe, for many years now.

I'll believe low consumtion HD when I see it. Then we'll see (like it or not) HD, at least on FM, really start to gain a foothold in consumer electronics.

The real news is Wifi integration. Which will probably suck the batteries down super-quick. Of course, I am positive that many US carriers, once they get their hands on these advanced phones with these kinds of chipsets will keep crippling them like they always do. Verizon is notorious for cripping Bluetooth functionality, and Cingular's had a few handsets that actually remove the FM radio to make room for other software apps.

Also, the article mentions the TI chip, offers transmit and receive on FM. I can see some interesting things happening with that.

PS: The iPod, while not having a built in radio, I believe does have an add-on radio (with RDS, again) as an aftermarket accessory.

FM does not mean HD. FM is FM, HD is HD.
The chipset includes new ultra fast, high capacity, forms of WIFI and WIMAX for internet radio and TV. Since virtually all HD radio stations as well as many satellite streams, and thousands of additional intenet stations are available worldwide on the net, what would be the advantage of adding short range HD radio, that only gets local duplicates of a tiny slice of what is already on internet radio?
No advantage=no HD=no sale.
Sorry iBiquity/cartel. You loose again.

FM DOES mean HD. HD is the standard...the only widely implemented format in America. If another format reaches this level of success, I'll eat my words. But with the stations that most Americans listen to (major market outlets owned by groups like Clear Channel and CBS) already in HD, and nearly all of the country now served by multiple HD signals...even rural areas like mine, yes...FM IS HD. The transition on the listeners side won't be instant. It won't even seem fast. It took 20 years (70s till the 90s) before personal computers reached "critical mass" and were anything but geek toys. HDTV is nearly a decade old, and most people I know don't have one yet. But they ALL say they'll get one when they buy a new tv. That's what'll happen with HD, too. The most popular types of radios (portables/walkmans) aren't even available yet. But thanks to companies like Bose, Cambridge Soundworks, and Tivoli, quality table radios, enormously popular in decades past, have made a comeback, and HD is growing like crazy in this sector. The Sangean component tuner is also great, and will be better when they bring out an upgraded version later this year. They are considering a version that will incorporate Wi-Fi radio as well as HD. That'll be a "must-have" at my house.

FM means analog FM, not FM HD ! :D By the time, if/when portable HD appears, it will be too late, with portable Internet Radio. They can keep making HD radios and broadcasting in HD, but no one cares:

Assuming the price is reasonable, I'd buy that one too...
