New Pine Bluff directional AM now on air

Noticed over the weekend that KJJI-1190 in Pine Bluff is on the air with a gospel format. The station has a brand new 3 tower array just west of I-530 in White Hall.

Joel J. Kinslow is listed as the licensee. I'm not sure if they have a studio locally or not. The audio processing needs some work, but the signal really goes, could hear it easily in SW Arkansas today.

Funny thing, KJJI is 25,000 KW daytime and gets out much better than KAAY at 50,000. But of course, KJJI has all new stuff. But, after listening to the new 1190 AM signal, it makes me wonder just how powerful a signal KAAY would have if they would put in a new transmitter and redo the entire ground system. It would city grade out a long distance.

Actually, if someone would just re-do the ground system, the signal should increase. I have a lot more faith in old transmitters than new ones.

I've been checking out coverage areas on radio-locator.

I'm interested to know which 1190 is dominant in the Russelville area. KJJI or KREB? My bet is KJJI cause it is more watts.

I got around this afternoon at lunchtime to check out KJJI 1190. Sadly, not only is the format forgetable (urban gospel), but its a relayer for KLRG 880 which recently dumped the brokered tin-foil hat talk for urban gospel. Yawn.

The only positive is that its the first new AM'er on the air in this area in many years. Pine Bluff has lost 4 of its 5 heritage AM Radio signals between 1985 and present. 1590 is now in use for KBJT Fordyce, but 1270(ex KADL/KABS/KZLR/KPBA) , 1400 (ex KCLA) , and 1490 (ex KOTN) are vacant.

Exactly.

KAAY's problem (as with most AM's nowadays) is the antenna system.

KAAY has been a shame since the format change....at midnight...way back in the day. I was listening. they kept talking about it happening but I refused to believe it. it was real..and real sad.
