New Pirate in Town

I listened @ around 10:45pm on 02/17/07 from the Bartow county line on I-75 to Kennesaw. The signal got stronger as I got closer to the ATL. From the previous posts I have read, it sure it covering a lot of area!

CAUGHT//////////////////rumor has it the pirate station has been caught.will be notified soon to stop broadcasting,,,,,,,,great job who caught them ...........

Yeah. Great job catching them, shutting down a station that's offering something different and serving a segment of the population that is otherwise not served. Great use of time and resources. How many burglaries, muggings, robberies, attacks, rapes, murders etc occurred over the weekend? How many children were abused? But that's ok. We got that pirate radio station off the air so we can all sleep better now. And Clear Channel marches on. Yep, our priorities are in order.............

Ya mon, no problem...

First of all Atlanta is not underserved when it comes to Urban programming... (well, actually there is no Urban Country station there yet, so there's a niche...) but I guess it's okay to play dumb and act like you don't know there are actually some rules and regs you have to follow to hold an FCC Station License... so perhaps the rules should be different for this group, huh?

It's the FCC who is responsible for pirate stations, not the Atlanta police department so you need to direct your comments about the lawlessness of the city of Atlanta to them...

Last time I checked HOT 107.9 nor V103 serves the Carribean population when it comes to playing reggae and dancehall. Im sure if it was an Oldies pirate station if would be all good. If they do get shut down, of course they'll be back on a different signal as always so HATE on!

Urban programming exists in abundance in Atlanta. Caribbean, not so much. Yep, I know one must follow rules and regs to "hold an FCC license." Have you tried to get a license lately? I have. It's damn near impossible. Hence why you have so many "pirate" stations popping up. And the pirate "problem" is only going to get worse until congress and the FCC address this issue in a meaningful way. LPFM? Great idea, but in reality it turned out to be a big joke. Again, all but impossible to get a license. Yet the FCC seems to hand out translators like candy, even though they are, technically speaking, the same thing...except the translators are not allowed to originate programming. I hope for every pirate the FCC shuts down, 5 more pop up in its place.

You say it's the FCC who is responsible for pirate stations? I couldn't agree more! Along with congress. But I think you actually meant to say it's the FCC who is responsible for policing the airwaves. I know this. I've held various FCC licenses over the years and have been in the business for nearly 30 years. My point is, I think our tax dollars and government resources could be put to better use addressing bigger issues. Also, when the FCC raids a pirate station, they are usually in the company of local law enforcement. They show up, kick in doors, barge in with weapons drawn etc. And again I say...how many burglaries, robberies, muggings, assaults, rapes, murders, how many children abused, wives beaten, drugs sold while our resources are put to the great use of shutting down a harmless low power radio station. That's pretty f'ed up.

Usually not a bad idea to be prepared when you're dealing with people who have already demonstrated that they have no respect for the law.

It honestly & truly wouldn't bother me one bit if they kept the other law enforcement officers on other tasks & instead of going in & making arrests they simply blasted operations like these to pieces with various explosives suited to the task, preferrably with as many of the criminals operating them inside at the time as possible, but that could be a waste of otherwise usable buildings & potentially the property of honest, law-abiding people who had the misfortunate of being in the vicinity. So, as much as I'd enjoy that option, it just isn't one that is practical enough to be put into play.

Pirate radio stations are NOT harmless. For one thing, you have no idea what kind of cheap, shoddy equipment they were using. Broken equipment can send out emissions on adjacent channels and harmonics, interfering with other services like TV. More importantly, if these stations are not shut down, what's to stop anybody else from starting up pirate services on more intrusive areas of the band. Imagine how awful the 2.4GHz unlicensed band would be if people could get away with throwing out high power on it.

Let's see - you said - "Yep, I know one must follow rules and regs to "hold an FCC license." Have you tried to get a license lately? I have. It's damn near impossible. Hence why you have so many "pirate" stations popping up. And the pirate "problem" is only going to get worse until congress and the FCC address this issue in a meaningful way."

Yes, I have gone through every process you can at the FCC to get licenses and was successful, so if I can do it, these guys can too. Everybody is equal here... just because they showed up from Jamaica doesn't change the rules for them or for anybody else. After 38 years in this business I know the process works.

The pirate problem stops when everybody plays by the rules, period. There is no rational justification for anyone to have a pirate radio station. If they want to go to Mexico and try to bribe their way through for a border radio station, then fine, go do it in Mexico.

Truthfully, Internet Radio provides EVERYONE the opportunity to program to their heart's content and I strongly recommend that every pirate consider that avenue... with the onslaught of Internet Radio antenna development that will allow cars, cell phones and other receivers to pick up stations off the Internet, that really is where the pirates ought to heading toward and like satellite radio it won't be regulated by the FCC....

For your info it wasnt the cops or the fcc who caught them,it was a concerned citizen HOW ABOUT THAT who knows his stuff/////////////// ;D hats off to the masked man /////

A border blaster wouldn't exactly be the best choice to cover the Atlanta market. Not to mention that there aren't really any anymore (although XEPE "Cash 1700" in Baja comes the closest thanks to its dial position and is being wasted with business talk and sports overflow).

However, an LMA for one of the many dinky AMs that are either dark or running pay-for-pray just to keep the lights on can't be much more expensive than getting the gear to run a serious pirate operation with ads and a stream and a class A-grade signal. Someone could put the format on legally if they tried.

it is not as easy as it sounds. most of the so-called dinky am stations are all trying to extract as much money as possible. they want to charge as much as $250/hr which translates to over $17,000 per week. this for am signals that don't have quality metro coverage.

WELL AS OF NOW RIDDIM 94 IS STILL BLAZIN ON! HOWEVER, THIS ISN'T THE ONLY PIRATE STATION IN TOWN SO THE MASKED MAN WHO IS "TRYING" TO STOP THEM ISN'T DOING A GOOD JOB!

TaylorEngineering....no song title or artist for now just broadcasting RIDDIM94.

BTW, what area do you guys think this guy is operating from?

From where people claim they can here it, it must be from a tall building or tower. Or they have 10,000+ watts. The signal was about the same as I drove up 85 from downtown.
