New PPM Report - Bad Month for Talk

Of course I still like to track the numbers. Did you see the new 12+ PPM talk numbers? (They are on the Ratings page on this site, Inside Radio, etc.) Yes, we only see 12+ share & weekly cume, but we know who gets which demos. Every talker went down, except 1250. It almost makes you wonder if all of the talkers should go all brokered. 970 is down in the 5's, 860 skidded again -- I see where 820 took a dump, but I wonder if the eye doctor went up 9-10AM? Would that be a hoot?

Every time I turn on the terrestrial stream in the dash board, everything (outside of AM drive) sounds like a tea party board meeting. Hobbs & I were talking about this a few weeks ago. The ART of talk is missing from talk radio. No one "talks" anymore. No stories, no simple fun chat, no everyday life stuff. I'll never forget the show I did about a junky old riding lawn mower I bought. I was proudly buzzing around the yard and the front wheel fell off, rolled into a tree and the mower klunked into uncut turf. Wife was laughing her ass off, the dog came up and pissed on the disabled machine... Phones lit up for hours with folks disparaging the thrifty host and telling their own stories of failed frugality. Lassiter spent an hour one time whining about how Lionel raided the refrigerator in the station kitchen and ate all of Bob's home made potato salad -- and Bob got phones! Have you ever gone to the frig' looking for that coveted last piece of fried chicken, and someone else snarfed it up? That's what I'm talkin' about. There was Lionel's pain show, and so many others like it. And all during a time when oodles of political news was breaking.

When Sinatra died, I played wall to wall Sinatra on 970, talking about my parent's musical influence on me -- people were calling in sobbing. Same when George Harrison died. I even played wall to wall Michael Jackson on 820 after he croaked. IT'S GODDAM TOPICAL and relatable for baby boomer talk listeners. And it sure beat the crap out of listening to another Sarah Palin sound bite! Sure, red meat is good and we need to talk politics --but we need relief. Us album rock programmers used to throw in "relief records" every so often between the long doses of heavy metal, so the head bangers could occasionally come up for air. Where is the REAL TALK relief for Talk Radio? Thank God for WMRK (my MP3 player - where Linkin Park meets Leslie Gore!).

I miss the 970 days of old. I had a job doing FCC compliance testing at Paradyne in Largo. I worked mostly outside so I got to listen to Bob Lasiter and company. On the weekends I loved Uncle Sam McClellen. How's lfe at the "Sprawling Larsen Mansion?

By God... I think Mark nailed it. A Tea Party board meeting. Well said. Simple, topical, local stuff. Dare I say "entertaining LOCAL talk radio"? At least we have memories!

I want to aologize to Mark about any stuff I said a long time ago. That is a cool post.

That Sinatra tribute show was one of the best shows ever, Mark. I remember it to this day. You had everyone spellbound. Problem is today, nobody wants to pay what it takes to have that kind of talent. So much of the money coming in has to go to corporate to cover the huge nut that they borrowed to purchase the station to begin with. No money left for good talent. Even Rush doesnt have fun anymore. No more bits, very little of the parody songs. Same with Beck. Beck has turned into a one trick pony. Used to be lots of fun like moron trivia and other bits. Now he has become Howard Beale.... getting stale. Schnitt and Hannity.... just rehashed Rush. Other stations talent is not much more that weekend training wheels talent. BTW, Mark, your podcast is good. The only local show on AM today that is worth anything is Jack and Tedd. The new girl is coming along but has a way to go.

Unfortunately Mark, you seem to have missed where society in general is, as witnessed by several comments in your post.

Even my lawyer understands where the public is when he told me that people watch Law and Order and (at the time, Ally McBeall) anbd expect a closing arguements that take less than 30 seconds - not long rambling stories. You cannot hold their attention that long.

Look how many people use Twitter and 140 characters. How long are most facebook posts?

Simply stated, the only people who want a long rambling story are those who have retired and want to sit around talking about the good old days with others in the same situation.

Your opening post was so long I couldn't read it all without being bored - I just skimmed it - and it was too much.

Sorry, thats the attention span today. Get to the point quickly - or expect tune out.

You have to decide who you want to appeal to and know your audience.

(BTW, only according to a number of polls this week, only 30% want to send their incumbent of EITHER PARTY back to DC, so its no surprise that talk radio SHOULD sound the way it does, according to your description).

With all the sources and time constraints today, your radio is just a utility-at it had better have exactly what the public wants, getting to the point, whether it be one of the Top Songs or Imortant Information, when they "punch in", else they will punch out just as fast.

FWIW.

I wish we could hear Neil Boortz in Tampa. Maybe Cox could carry him or maybe WSB or even WDBO on one of their HD channels in Tampa.

Salem has Boortz buried late at night on 860. You would have to get the rights from them first. How does WDBO come in in Tampa? Signal should be good enough, but adjacent slop from 570 probably wipes it out. I can hear it in Sarasota when I can null 570 some. He's on 1220 in Sarasota, but that is such a flea power operation that nobody can hear it. I dont know what their power is, legally should not be over 150 watts via a STA, but seems to have more than that.

sports talk does have a tendency to shift to other topics on a pretty regular basis now. unfortunatley we don't have much left in this town worth listening to. too young to remember diaz on during his heyday. what i hear now is a man who shows up 1 minute before show starts, leaves 30 seconds after it's over and never does work while he's not on the air. very lazy and is stealing money at this point. i know many of you adore him but i don't get it. i still think ian can be a good host if joined with an educated cohost. 1040 offers nothing. j.p. on 1010 still has promise but he needs to learn how to expand his show topics more. i like his opinions and needs to understand that getting pissed makes for good radio. he'll argue then make up with the caller before he lets them go. screw that. let the guy have it if you don't like what he's saying. for now duemig is still the leader in this town and he is very good at shifting to other topics. a host that understands that debate is good and is firm with his beliefs no matter how asanine they make seem. still wish they could bring back sandy penner. always found his show entertaining. there still hasn't been a day where ron and ian didn't make me miss chris. talk about a guy that could get off topic better than anyone. miss that guy.

Kabrich,

I've noticed that pretty much everyone here ignores your posts these days, but I just wanted to chime in and remind you how out of touch you are with reality (broadcasting especially). You are what's wrong with modern radio. People like you ruined radio in the 90's and you keep trying to drag us down with your yuppified, stuffed shirt, late 80's machinations of what broadcasting is supposed to be. You say that radio audiences want short sound bites because they have short attention spans, the only reason that the average listener has come to expect this is because people like you have dumbed them down. I get calls almost every morning from listeners at our station asking why the callers on our syndicated shows only get 20 or 30 seconds of talk time. Everyone is sick to death with the current model of 30 second sound bytes and nothing local or conversational... right now people are crying out for "long rambling stories"... these days, if you've heard one AM talk show, you've heard all of 'em.

Keep up the good work, Mark.

Chris Thomas was great at it...

Definately! So was Tedd Webb when he did sports. Both Chris and Tedd had the ability to make their shows compelling enough for the sports fan, yet still interesting enough for those who didn't care about sports. I haven't heard anyone do it as well since.

there still hasn't been a day where ron and ian didn't make me miss chris. talk about a guy that could get off topic better than anyone. miss that guy.

Hey Alnite,

Remember when Chris would holler into his mic at the beginning of his show, "Hugh! Hire a general manager!" It did not matter what sports season it was. He was a hoot!

This is a great post Mark started.

But both Kabrich and Mark are right and the same side of the argument.

We are at another crossroads in trying to follow and find the perfect presentation that will grab the listener and hold 'em.

Radio was read its obituary many times over the last 80 years. Somebody came along and stumbled into something that worked (Jack-FM)and others followed suit, trying to duplicate the sucess. Some worked (Boss Radio) and became stale after a period of time. How many stations have gone through "format of the month" before settling on one that happened to stick for the next 20 years. (WPIX).

When it comes to talk, what a breath of fresh air WFLA was when I came down here in 1988! I had sampled Q-105 and was not impressed. Canned weather on the week-ends and over tested songs during the week.
In the community, they were all over. I seemed not a weekend went by when they were not appearing somewhere. Concerts after Buc's games, etc. I felt that was their strong suit and other stations were trying to copy them in other ways.

None of that is here - or any place else - for that matter. A couple of interns and a banner with the name of the station in front of a car dealer. Maybe a "personality" stating, We're here, come see us." That's it!

Where did the people go? Why don't they care for stories?

Ask the industry people why they gave up things that worked.

Jacor, CC, AM/FM, CBS/Viacom/Infinity/whatevernameworks today, Chancellor, etc., when the FCC relaxed the ownership rules, the bidding wars started and ended up with stations being bought up 18x's more than they were worth. If they didn't, some other company would.

Instead of trying to keep the station attractive, they let the old girl start wearing Dollar General make-up.

Mark, remember "Battle of the talk show hosts" and "Boom Blast '94"?

Where is 95YNF's outdoor concert at Straub Park?

Watch when the pirates start getting serious and a willing FCC gets an ear for them. I am seeing indications of that, now in different markets.

To some extent, sports radio has become the place where the hosts can get off-topic from time to time.

Yes they do and that's exactly when I punch out. When I listen to sports radio I want to hear sports discussed not general "guy talk".

Great post Mark. I've been banging that drum for many years now. A Dem isn't going to change a Rep's mind and vis-a-versa. It's just an on-going bitch fest and people are sick of it.

Your lawn mower story erases those political lines and it's something EVERYONE can relate to.

Now, how can we make this happen in Tampa Bay?

Do you think pirate radio stations will spring up when the Gulf of Mexico is solid oil? No sign that the gummint or BeePee have any handle on anything.
