New ratings rundown from Rolltide...When?

We are all waiting for the mighty all knowing Rolltide to tell us what to think about Tenn Valley radio. Oh when can we expect his radiant knowledge about the ratings? We need to know how and what is right to think, what we should tell everyone.

Please don't encourage Rolltide! Does he/she even have access to the numbers anymore. His/her views are often funny to read but worth about as much as AIG's stock! You do know those on the bottom are usually the loudest and have the most to say.... Like you were saying where are Rolltides long post? :)

OOOOh, I must have struck a nerve on my last post HAHAHA! The fact that both of you have registered on the same day and only hours after each other, and have only posted one post a piece, tells me that you are the same person trying to make it sound like multiple people bashing me. I imagine you're some part-timer at Black Crow Huntsville and are pissed that your numbers tanked and I called you out on it. Or maybe you are from the worthless 93.3 The Wolf and you are pissed that I am calling for the station to change and simulcast WVNN. Seems like your time would be better spent figuring out how to bring up your stations numbers. I don't know... I could be wrong, but I really don't give a damn. This is a public forum here for pubic discussion and everyone is free to say their own views and opinions, therefore I will continue to do so despite your childish rants.

Oh, I almost forgot! I've been so busy lately I haven't been able to post since the numbers came out. Star 99.1... wow 2.5 and dropping... how much farther will it fall? Lite 96.9 is jumping for joy and reaping the benefits. Nice jump for urban audiences with WEUP and WHRP, congrats to them both. Those numbers are impressive considering both stations coverage issues. So are Hot 103.5's. Oh, and for those who might be pissed by this comment, my point is still justified and the numbers don't lie. 93.3 The Wolf continues to make hardly any impact as country, and WVNN's numbers continue climbing. WVNN on a stronger FM signal (93.3) would be smart... but that's only my opinions, LOL! Congrats to WVNN as well for continued success and high ratings! Good job guys! Anyone else have any other thoughts? Unless others, I enjoy reading and taking into consideration others opinions, even if they do not agree with my own.

RollTide! You are what is wrong with message boards like this. You are the person who just gets on here to get people fired up. You enjoy posting something that gets someone mad. You seem like you have a bone to pick with Black Crow! Did they fire you or something? Here are two posts that you took digs at Black Crow:

Well I am not a part-timer at Black Crow or a full-timer. But I do know that you are not telling the whole truth about the numbers! If you are just looking at the persons 12+ numbers you must have no clue what advertisers in the real world look for. I have been a fan of radio in Huntsville for a good while. And not once have I ever had a ad agency buy persons 12+.

So be fair and un-biased.

Take Star 99.1 yes it is hurting. But I blame more of that to the over sampling of 55+ by Abitron. I don't believe Star 99.1 is in the toilet, than I believe the Classic Country Station in Hartselle was in the Top 5 a couple of books ago! Arbitron is outdated and is killing some good companies. And maybe if you read something besides fighting on here then you would have read all of the Arbitron ratings woes.

Here is another time you went after Black Crow:

What is going on at Black Crow Huntsville (Rocket City Broadcasting)? Does anyone else up here on the north end of the state find it fascinating that Star 99.1's numbers are abysmal falling down to number 12 in the market? That is unacceptable for the 100,000 watt powerhouse who has always been a top 5 or 6 station. I don't listen to the new morning show they have but from what I hear, it sucks. Also, Rocket 95.1's numbers are on a drastic downward fall as well to the current number 9 position.

Once again Star is struggling. But 100,000 or not it has 4 direct competitors. Now The River, WZYP, Lite 96, and WDRM is like Country AC. You seem like a smart programmer. What would you do Rolltide?

But as far as the Rocket. It is a nationally recognized Active Rock Station. It targets Men not Persons 12+.

If you had the numbers you would see what Rocket looks like men 25-54 or Men 18-49 where they dominate!

I have been burned by corporate radio and and have got out of the business. I pull for the underdog! And Black Crow has been going head to head with the big boys for years! Both stations have Dj's in the building. Ask Clear Channel or Cumulus how many live jocks they have.

Sorry for my rant but I don't think these boards are for people to hide behind names and jab at the competition. If you are a true radio person you know we all need to stick together. We are in the best fraternity of them all! And the corporate suits are killing the business I love.

I must say that I do agree with Rolltide when it comes to "The Wolf." They have have about as much of a chance as an Alabama farmer that's lost 1000 acres of corn in a drought without crop insurance. WVNN would do much better on 93.3, although they would lose some ground in areas like Moulton and points south where 93.3 has a weak signal. I do believe, however, that WQAH 105.7 has the ratings they do. The tower 5 miles away from me sits atop battleground mountain here in the northwest section of Cullman Co and has a great signal in the Huntsville area. Although I do not listen to the station because I'm more of a 70's/80's country fan and WQAH plays a lot from the 50's and 60's. There are many who enjoy the mix of Classic Country and Bluegrass. It pays the bills, too. They have live jocks who are seasoned (Mark Donovan ex WDRM, and Carol Lynn ex 101.1 WFMH) who are good at what they do. I don't necessarily think they are a top 5, but they DO beat the wolf and are likely a top 10.

Another idea... someone may have already mentioned this but simulcast WVNN on 92.5/93.3 or WHRP on 94.1/92.5 (like the "Cool 92-94" setup.) Decatur has a sizeable African American population and the "Adult Mix" could lkely gain listeners in the Morgan/Lawrence County areas.

However, I won't get in the middle of this. Someone may get mad at me and start sending harassing PM's like the person who got burned by WABB and had a sick "fetish"(as he described it) to radio station T-shirts :D

Thank you for engaging me in conversation about this. That is why I post, to spark conversation and hear opinions and ideas! First, no I have never worked for nor do I know anyone at black crow nor do I have anything out for them. The funny thing is I agree with SOOO much of what you just said! Quickly about The Rocket. I love'em! GREAT rock station. One of the best left in this country I think. But when I mentioned their drop in numbers, I wasn't only referring to 12+. I know their target is male and they dominate, but when Fish started even their female numbers sky-rocketed! Those numbers then began falling which led to their over all downward 12+ slump. Where your quote of me stops is where I asked if anyone thought the creud humor of Fish's show had worn off (and I meant, but admittedly was not clear, was with women, and thats not a hit against Fish's show, I think its great). I know they aren't worried as much with a decline in women listeners but I'm sure they loved being number 2 while it lasted.

I think big corporate is killing radio. That's why I am on Star 99.1 so bad right now! I want to see them improve again. I have always been quick to give props to black crow when they have done well, but you seem to have ignored finding examples of that. I love it when small and private owned stations do well against corporate. I'm proud to see it. I also agree that arbitron is out dated, but I caution you to not write off WQAH so quickly because they have many more audience than you think. They are the only ones with classic country in this market and this is definitely a market that classic country would do well in. But for WAHR to fall that far that quickly is not totally due to outdating or imperfections of the arbitron system. There is a problem. They have been on a steady decline in every demo, and it is unacceptable. It's not like 100.3 The River, and Lite 96.9 are new stations and Star 99.1 has always stood their ground against them until now. Changes need to be made and if posting that comment on here fires them up to make those changes and do better than good. That's why I said what I said about 93.3 because they have has never done well as country so I posted my ideas as to how I think the signal could be put to better use, which several people have agreed with. Does anyone disagree? Please say so and why. I'd love to discuss it.

I post on here to express and hear opinions. That is why I often say "What are your thoughts?" at the end of my posts, so I honestly don't see what about my posts on here have you feeling like all I want to do is just make people angry. Think about it, if that were my intent I would be insulting and vulgar which I am neither. Radiosrule2's comment of "His/her views are often funny to read but worth about as much as AIG's stock" for example, is meant to be insulting to me. I have never posted anything to or about anyone such as this (except for my reply to that particular insult). I have seen people that speak to others like that all the time on here come and go and I hate it just as much as you. I've always had great conversations with everyone here and I have always enjoyed posting here so forgive me if I am a little confused as to the sudden hostility. The reason I mention when stations start doing poorly is because I hate to see management miss-handling things and letting them fall so badly. It is our right to complain when our stations aren't being run well in order to get them back on track again. The same for when I complement stations for doing well. They deserve praise for their hard work. What is hostile about posting that? You, wilddj, have also done the same, posting what you like and dislike about show, stations, etc. I remember a fairly rescent post from you discussing problems you had with The Rick and Bubba Show. That is your opinions and that is one reason why this board is here. You didn't do it to make anyone mad, you were just having conversation, so why am I being blasted for trying to conversate?

So, you ask, what would I do with Star 99.1 to improve? Well, I don't think the new morning show is working. They need to bring in good local morning jocks. I personally think they need to play more of todays a/c hits and a little less old stuff. Leave the heavy playing of old hits to Lite 96.9 & go for the younger a/c audience and show them that you have something different to offer. Now that I feel like I have written a novel lol, for what its worth I am sorry if I have made anyone angry. It is not, nor has it ever been my intent, but I refuse to apologize for posting my opinion, (good or bad) with the intent to spark inspiration, conversation, and debate.

I agree with you. I posted a little while ago that if they simulcasted 93.3 with WVNN they could put 94.1 and 92.5 back together and improve WHRP's coverage in Athens and Decatur. If they are reluctant to do that, I also had the idea of maybe simulcasting sports WUMP on 92.5 along with their 103.9 translator for better FM sports coverage. That might improve their numbers. What do you think?

I agree that The Ump would benefit with a simulcast on 92.5, because Decatur doesn't have a clear choice for FM sports, Jox 94.5 has a weak signal, and 93.9 in the Shoals is too far away also. 103.9 doesn't do any benefit to the Decatur area, and the clearest of the stations is WWTM 1400.

I may be the only one who has noticed, but the boards are not too active lately. Hopefully something big will happen soon to get people talking again. WKLD 97.7 is supposed to return either this month or June. I'm looking forward to their return with their new format. My guess is oldies or Classic Country. If they went oldies they may make an impact on what's left of 1550 WLOR. Also, I'm not sure if Fun 92.7 in Arab has any ratings in Huntsville, but I'm sure if they did that WKLD could really do some damage. On the other hand, if they went Classic Country, They may give WQAH a run for their money. They could maybe focus on 70's 80's and early 90's Country, and give fans (who feel displaced listening to WDRM, but feel out of touch with WQAH's way back hits) an option.

Just my thoughts, and so far I haven't had any hate mail, so I guess things are going good :D

Travis

Classic country would be a very smart choice for WKLD. They would have much better Huntsville coverage than WQAH and would definitely pull an audience I think. Wouldn't it be cool to see a classic country team up of WKLD and WQAH as a simulcast. 105.7 would have the clear Decatur signal and 97.7 would have the clear Huntsville signal. Fun 92.7 isn't really a player in Huntsville's numbers, but I don't think there is enough oldies audience for another oldies stations on top of Sunny 98/1550, 100.3 the river, Lite 96.9 and Star 99.1. You never know though! I'm excited to see what WLOR's rating will do now with the FM signal though.
