In recent months, many organizations have filed applications for new (and improved) radio facilities in the state--in the non-commercial portion of the FM band. Does anyone have any predictions about what these stations might offer? Does anyone have any ideas what these stations should offer? It looks like a decent opportunity to bring more creativity and programming choices to the area.
The FCC database shows the following applications:
1. 91.1, Bradford (Westerly), 780 Watts, Colina Alta Ministries, Inc. Construction Permit GRANTED
2. 88.7, Smithfield, 8.5KW, Bryant University (POWR UPGRADE TO EXISTING FACILITY)
3. 91.5, Pascoag, 5KW, Bryand University
4. 91.5, Woonsocket, 500 watts, Rhode Island Public Radio
5. 91.5, Forestdale, 300 watts, The Marconi Broadcastin Foundation
6. 89.9, Block Island, 100 watts, Sacred Heart University
7. 89.5, Charlestown, 2.5KW, Sacred Heart University
8. 89.5, Westerly, 3.2KW, Rhode Island Public Radio
9. 88.1, Providence, 1.2KW, Wheeler School (POWER UPGRADE TO EXISTING FACILLITY)
10. 88.1, Newport, 100 watts, Rhode Island Public Radio
This is not an exhaustive list, and some of the applications are obviously mutually exclusive. Nevertheless, there seems to be a lot of opportunity on the horizon for more an better programming. I am especially curious what Bryant University would do with two stations and all that power.
