new rimshot in DM radio

Jon Ellis' Northpine.com is reporting on KMGO Centerville's FCC app to move their transmitter site to a site between Albia and Chariton. If constructed, it would have a better signal in Des Moines than Osceola's KNWI 107.1, and the proposed rimshot As at Patterson and Pleasantville.

Without a doubt, this would be the most agressive rimshot proposal in Iowa so far, as a 1500' tower would be built. Any thoughts about this scenario?

Unless KMGO is considering a move into Des Moines, why would they do this? There's already enough country stations in the DSM area (KJJY, KHKI, Kix 101, the Stuart station, KCOB, KWMT and on and on and on)

Would the small town business in Centerville care if their ad get's heard in Des Moines?

My first thought would be "insanity". That's an extremely aggressive rimshot, even more aggressive than the (longstanding) 107.3 Odessa/Kansas City rimshot in Missouri.

Haven't been to Centerville for years -- the last time I was there and listening to the car radio, it seemed as though KMGO was the main signal with KCOG being kind of an afterthought.

Then again, I'm sure it's been years since Gene Logsdon, "The Ol' Farm Boy", signed KCOG on at 5:45 every morning before going to his day job running the local artificial insemination service....

Wow this is insane!

They must feel that they can penetrate the DSM metro otherwise they wouldn’t consider such a large investment.

I wonder how far they will “bend” the coverage circles to attract the DSM advertisers.

The chances that this is actually built and operated as "99 Country" are pretty slim. I think this is a speculative venture. Spend a few thousand for some engineering work to see if the station could construct facilities that offered Des Moines coverage. If the application is successful, the station value goes up, and there's a chnce that someone makes them an offer they can't refuse. If the application is turned down on a technicality, it's still worth more because there is still the possibility of upgrading.

This would be Des Moines' best rimshot simply because of the height and power. The facility would have a good deal of usable fringe signal, especially with the right processing. I doubt you would see a mass appeal format, but a niche format such as a religious or Spanish-language formatcould do well with Des Moines and Southern Iowa/Northern Missouri coverage.

KMGO is a very successful station. If it did sell, the format and calls would undoubtedly end up on another station in the area. The KELR 105.3 (upgrading to cover Ottumwa) and KLBA 96.7 would be likely candidates.

Des Moines already has 3 spanish & 4 religious stations (not counting the K-Loves, Family Radio, etc.) This area doesn't need anymore of either format.

I would have to disagree with calling this "insanity". It may not be the best signal in the world, but this is a smart move for them.

Compare this to the 96.1/107.1 rimshots. Neither of those stations put any kind of coverage over Des Moines (and I remember calling them nuts when they decided to do this) yet somehow they managed to get at least a few listeners.

By comparison, their 60 dBu will cover roughly half the metro. Due to their height, an average car radio shouldn't have any problem receiving the signal (even downtown).

The 107.3 in KC that you mention isn't much of a rimshot. I happen to be quite familiar with that station and the area. It comes in quite well throughout most of the metro. KC has such severe multipath and LOS issues that most listeners don't really notice the static. A few places on the west side (such as near I35/I635) but otherwise fine.

Since the majority of people listen to the radio either in the car or at work, then it isn't absolutely necessary to have a 70dBu signal in order to get listeners.

Not sure what they'd run format-wise, but I would doubt they'd want to do country if they're looking to get into Des Moines. It's very likely they'll sell the station once built since a rimshot signal is worth a lot more than what they got now. I can just see EMF (the K-love folks) wanting to get their hands on this one. They did something similar in the KC area with a rimshot station on 96.1.

It won't be for sale, and it won't switch from country - and I might know something about it...lol...so I wouldn't waste your typing on format changes and speculations of that nature.

The very idea that it WOULDN'T switch from country is insane! The market already has plenty of it and DSM isn't getting any 'countrier' if you know what I mean. So, it's a waste of money and time to try to do this since it won't really sell all that well.

Sorry.

Yeah, and my wife is prettier than yours...etc...sorry, I can only take so much "INSANITY" and nonsense arguing. KMGO is a GIANT station, which already covers ALOT of southern iowa, this just adds the central part to that. I know it's hard to fathom a station that isn't corporate owned, doesn't flip it's format every two years, and SOMEHOW makes enough money to exist, but outside of Des Moines, there are some that seem to find a way to "get by"......Don't get me wrong, I don't have any problem with friendly discussion, and usually I like reading everybody's thoughts on things. I just don't like the word insane I guess. I'll also stop posting on this thread now, as anymore is going to get pointless.

The central part is different than the southern part my friend. In fact, in some ways ALOT different. But I know...that's an INSANE thing to say.
