New Rock 101.9

Ummm... Not So Much... The thing that attracts me TO a station is the music... the thing that KEEPS me there are jocks. Maybe when they decide to spend a little coin and bring some on it'll gain a little traction. It's kinda hard to build a connection with automated radio. Programming issues aside, 'RXP wasn't a ratings explosion by any means so going back to it seems like sheer insanity... you know, trying the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Good Luck to them! ;)

I don't think any of the Class A's in Northern Jersey are willing to give up their "comfort" and "heritage" to take a stab at a 50/50 gamble ...

Hopefully they'll get a good live and local jock lineup together. They've got Brian Phillips from WHTG and the old WRXP on board, which is a good start. Maybe they could hire Matt Knight while they're at it...

Just curious... have you listened to the station recently? (I ask not sarcastically, but seriously, as I think you may be missing out if you haven't given them a chance.)

They do feature jocks, but a set schedule has not yet been announced. Not sure if they are live or voicetracked at the moment, but it is hard to tell, so they're doing a good job if they're tracked.

And, this format is not even close to any of the previous RXP incarnations (probably why they only use the WRXP calls for the legal). Much heavier on currents with a focus on newer rock, thus the name and branding. No AC/DC, Van Halen or any classic rock tracks that RXP mixed in. Seems like they are slowly expanding their playlist and branching out in different directions, too.

I'm not saying its ratings will be superb, but it's a more focused version of what a current rock station should sound like. It's not trying to be all things to all people like the old RXP. Maybe that will help. Maybe it won't. Time will tell.

I actually enjoyed the mix the "old" RXP played. Lots of surprises and good stuff thrown in. However, I understand trying to please everyone won't work in the long term. This time around, the playlist is more focused. I hope they do well.

The old RXP played an excellent variety of songs, did not have much repetition, and always had some surprises ... the problem was that it was all over the place musically, with jarring segues going from AC/DC to Arcade Fire. The new RXP certainly has the focus that the original was lacking, but has much higher repetition than your typical alternative (I don't listen a ton, but there's been a few occasions where I've heard the same song repeated in one hour), practically nothing surprising musically thus far, and really no personalities other than "Siri" and a presumably-voicetracked Brian Phillips & Walter Flakus. Hopefully this station can combine the positive aspects of its previous and current incarnations as time goes on - New York City has never been home to a highly acclaimed modern rock station, and I'm hoping that the new 'RXP can accomplish this for the first time. I'm hoping it can sufficiently fill the void for those of us who fondly remember WHTG, WLIR, and Philly's WDRE.

This was true... up until the last year and a half or so. Towards the end, the gold library was reduced to pretty much the same size as what's currently on New Rock 101.9, if not less. You pretty much heard the same songs day in and day out, and there were only a handful of gold titles that you wouldn't expect to hear on either Q104.3 or your average commercial alternative station. They also played only about 15-20 currents and a limited amount of recurrents - the difference is, they only played one or two per hour (maybe a bit more at night), so you didn't hear them as often. And while a lot of the stuff that made the earlier RXP interesting to listen to was removed, the out-of-place AC/DC, Van Halen, GNR, and Tom Petty hits remained.

That said, the station did achieve higher ratings during this period, so it seems like they were doing something right. And I was still sorry to see the station go. I think we do have to face the facts: a commercial station is not going to achieve high ratings or billing by appealing to die-hard alternative fans. I do think that the station needs to cut back its rotation of the top currents. And I don't think it would kill them to throw a deeper track or "oh wow" type of song once an hour or so, and a bit more pre-90's music (how about a retro lunch?). But realistically, the core of the station will have to be the top charting Alternative songs and the tried-and-true 90's/00's gold tracks. I do think they've improved a bit since they've signed on, adding a bit more new music that's not all in the top 15 of the charts (local band Matt & Kim was a good add), and a few pre-90's titles here and there.

Can't say I hate that idea LOL. :)

101.9 isn't anything great. Every time I hear the station I hear the same songs. That annoying song by Gotye, the new Killers song, and Neon Trees.

I have also noticed that they play songs from the 90s and early 2000's, but it is like 2005 to 2010 never existed. There are many great songs from that time. Better then most of the new songs from the past year.

Hopefully whoever programs the songs will get better at it soon.
